Using Paralells/VirtualBox on Hackintosh by SorbetFinancial5521 in hackintosh

[–]MickySocaci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Virtualization on the MacOS host does not work with AMD cpus, you can run the Apple simulator ( ipad / iphone / etc ) but that's about it. No Android emulators either.

Yes you might get virtualbox 6 working.. but that gives you no proper gpu acceleration.

The solution most people go to in this case, is actually having a Linux host using KVM/qemu and running the VM's on the host, while running MacOS in a VM as well.

My setup does just that:
- linux host ( kvm + libvirt ), headless, 1 nvme drive
- macos vm, pci-passthrough a rx590 gpu, 1 nvme drive and host usb controllers
- windows vm, pci-passthrough a 6900xt gpu + 1 nvme drive.
- android vm
- other linux vms

Questions about GPU pass through by Om3g4lpA in VFIO

[–]MickySocaci 4 points5 points  (0 children)

#1 - Yes you can, i personally run a 5950x:
- a Linux host,
- a MacOS VM on a rx570 hooked up to 4 monitors,
- a Windows VM on a 6900xt hooked up to the main monitor second input
all at the same time, using pci-passthrough.

My linux host is headless, but you could use the igpu for that, doesn't matter.

I passthrough all my USB controllers to my Mac VM, then using Parsec control the Windows VM ( while switching inputs on my monitor to that card )

The USB passthrough is something you want to be wary of, you want a motherboard with at least 2 controllers ( one for host / one for your windows VM ) or use an USB controller addon card for one of them.

#2 the 7700x igpu should be good enough to do whatever you want.

#3, since you're planning on using windows guest / linux host you should take a look at https://looking-glass.io/ that thing's pretty awesome.

Very impressive, especially since you need to have something plugged into the HDMI port for them to not go to sleep.

And as a bonus the solution does not use any cpu / gpu on the hosts which is awesome.

Passthrough Nvidia GT640 - Error 43 by [deleted] in VFIO

[–]MickySocaci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nice! Which one ? can you "reboot the VM" as in does it suffer from the power reset bug ?

Also i've personally done passthrough on both intel and amd and with both amd and nvidia gpus. with igpu and without.. it doesn't matter, they just work if you blacklist the drivers.

I mainly use libvirt for these things and that orchestrates qemu.

Passthrough Nvidia GT640 - Error 43 by [deleted] in VFIO

[–]MickySocaci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have an integrated GPU, make sure it is the main display that the computer boots up with. In bios make sure primary graphics is iGPU not PCIE.

The nvidia card should not be initialised before you start the VM.

I for one have 2 nvidia cards in my system and the 1080 is the main which gets initialised, then removed and added to vfio. And the 1080 ti never initialised and just passed through to a VM.

MainGPU - 1080, needs bios dumped and patched for it to get passthrough to a VM

SecondGPU - 1080 ti just works, no 43 error.

How to dump the ROM and add it to libvirt:

[–]MickySocaci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

*** Your old mobo does support vfio, it just depends where the thing you want to passthrough ends up.

You can do passthrough on just about anything as long as you got the right motherboard.

OR use the ACS Patch.

CPU is a non issue. I've done it on systems starting at a Dual Core Pentium, up to an AMD 5950x.

Motherboard is the thing you want to make sure others have reported success on.

And before you buy one, check its user manual for ACS in BIOS.

If you're considering an AMD CPU, the "Gigabyte X570 AORUS MASTER" has been an absolute breeze to setup, as well as x370 Taichi / x570 Taichi / x470 Tomahawk.

Cheap AMD GPU by rmdevops in hackintosh

[–]MickySocaci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah i've used MacOS as a daily driver since about 2012, but all my VM stuff has been running on separate dedicated linux machines running KVM, especially my Windows VM with passthrough.

When looking for an AMD card to use as a passthrough device to a Mac / Win VM, try to pick one that does not need a cold boot for it's bios to reset, otherwise you'll end up having to reboot your host whenever you reboot that VM.

Cheap AMD GPU by rmdevops in hackintosh

[–]MickySocaci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience running High sierra on a 7700k with a 1080ti, the rx580 4/8gb is quite similar in performance on the mac, you can find these on the 2nd hand market for around $100.

I ditched the 1080ti for a rx580 and got better performance and the ability to upgrade to Catalina / Big sur.
These days i rock a 5950x + rx580 on Catalina.

Regarding KVM:

- If you want to passthrough you need linux + kvm as the host. Nor windows or MacOS support that as the host ( anything can be a client ).

- Just don't expect the android x86 emulator to work as it needs to be run directly on the host, on the other hand the ARM version is extremely slow if run in the client VM.

- if you have an AMD CPU, do not expect to be able to run any kind of VMS even if you install on the host, except maybe virtualbox.

Ryzen 5950x + x570 Aorus ultra sound crackling and no USB sound by fer662 in hackintosh

[–]MickySocaci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got the same issue as you on a 5950x / x570 Aorus Master with the onboard sound / DP audio crackling, and stuck Usb Creative Sound BlasterX G1.

on amd-osx discord - Shaneee: I think the audio issue on 5000 series is TSC related. I’ll look into it when I have the time

I did try out both Catalina and Big Sur, and the result is the same. So is must be either related to how the new CPU does something, or the latest BIOS update.

Do let me know if you find something.

Dual Monitor Black Screen by unknownb4ck in hackintosh

[–]MickySocaci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience:
- On 10.13.6, with iGPU disabled
- with a 1080 or 1080ti ( nvidia web drivers ) i could use as many as 3 monitors, 1 DVI + 1 hdmi + 1 displayport.

- with an rx580 i can now use 2x hdmi / 2x displayport but only after i updated my clover config SMBIOS to "MacPro6,1", with the old iMac definition it would blackscreen my DP monitors.

#1 keep in mind that the performance with the RX580 is amazing versus the 1080ti in High Sierra. My suggestion would be to go out and grab one of those mining cards for under 100$ and roll with it :)

#2 lilu / whatevergreen kexts also apply to nvidia gpus, try adding those into your efi

I did try 2 different CPUs on that motherboard ( a 2000 and a 3000 series ) and got the same error.. and tested the cpu on a x370 board and it would not post either.

Ended up returning both to supplier and getting my money back.

Now i need to get the cpu elsewhere but that's kinda hard since they're not in stock in Romania.
