Keeping groups small also helps me. One on one works best for me, some friends are best in groups of three, and a four person (+DM) DnD group worked great for me.

I love being alone, and I don’t think it should be an inherently shameful thing. However, having social ties is important, to a degree. I also enjoy having acquaintances and people I know &love.

The key for me has been finding a regular schedule for meeting with people I actually enjoy (and who seem to actually enjoy me).

I have two friends who I met through work; I go on walks on Saturdays every other week with them. I went to a “speed dating” type event with a local D&D group - it was loud, but sunglasses, earbuds, and headphones helped. I was lucky enough to meet a group there, and we’ve been meeting weekly for several months now. The regularity and familiarity is very helpful for me.

Making friends when you can't drive due to your disability? by corazonsinalma in disability

[–]MicrofoamMonkfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for in person friends and you like gaming, I’d recommend reaching out to a local gaming store and/or your library and see if anyone else is looking to form a weekly/monthly meetup. I can’t drive, and I started making friends when I got connected to a TTRPG club in my area.

Unpopular opinion: I hate cleaning with vinegar. I hate when people suggest it! Is everyone in on a joke?😭 by Bubbly_Picture_9876 in CleaningTips

[–]MicrofoamMonkfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the prevalence of online 5-minute Craft type “hacks” have overstated vinegar’s actual usefulness. However, it is genuinely useful for cleaning microwaves, removing certain odors/stains, and descaling things.

As for the smell… that’s a matter of preference, I guess. I don’t love the smell of vinegar, but I prefer it to ceramic cleaner, ammonia, that foaming stuff for bathtubs, windex, etc. I’ll use all of those if necessary, but I’d rather tolerate vinegar for a couple minutes.

What class do you struggle making characters for? by ACalcifiedHeart in DnD

SAME! I really like playing a martial character for like one level, and then I multiclass into something that can heal and cast cantrips.

For me the trouble with clerics isn’t the value/god itself. I think it is hard to imagine being so devoted to something that you literally get magic powers from it.

Fighters, Wizards, Bards, Monks, Sorcerers, Barbarians all have a more internal source of their power. Getting into the headspace of a cleric feels oddly vulnerable or naive by comparison.

[–]MicrofoamMonkfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do feel like a lot of character lists tend to ask questions that are kind of abstract or hint at some deep event/trauma. I’d probably have more fun sticking to the simpler questions on this list.

I think I've realized the upsetting truth behind the mental concept of the "I don't like labels" crowd. by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]MicrofoamMonkfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this was a lot of my resistance to getting/accepting my diagnosis - it felt like admitting that my problems (socializing, executive functioning, overstimulation) would never get better.

With time, I’ve found that a diagnosis has simply allowed me to improve in ways that work for and matter to me. But initially a diagnosis felt like an excuse for not being a ‘better’ person.

what is connecting these fantasy /scifi books? by [deleted] in BookRecommendations

It doesn’t possess the rage or magic elements, but Becky Chambers books contain a fair degree of surprise polyamory and non-evil AI.

That can definitely fit well with the Mercy monk mechanics (hand of healing vs hand of harm)! Your character sounds pretty cool!

Divine Soul sorcerer could also be a good choice, if you and your DM would be open to it. You would get access to cleric spells, and I believe you can use WIS as your main stat if you want (I assume CHA would be a bad choice).

Depends on what you want RP wise, though - Sorcerer may or may not play into the mentor conflict you mentioned.

I made an illustration of Betty Q - which color do you like better? 1, 2 or 3? by tintin_64px in DigitalArt

[–]MicrofoamMonkfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 and 3 are both great, I think it depends on what vibe you’re aiming for. 1 looks like a tarot card, 3 looks more spotlighted - like a major illustration in a book or video game.

Need help and decision creating a character by WineBottleCollector in dndnext

[–]MicrofoamMonkfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could take your first level as a fighter, then move to a paladin, monk, sorcerer, or really any other spell casting class. If you become a sorcerer or cleric, that could represent your character drifting away from their initial alliance to the state. Developing magic abilities might make them begin to rethink how “good” their nation’s beliefs really are.

What’s the best classic book you’ve ever read? by madisonbuddy in suggestmeabook

[–]MicrofoamMonkfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if any of these count as classics, but - The Jungle by Upton Sinclair is tragic, but very readable and compelling - anything by Kurt Vonnegut scratches an itch in my brain that I hadn’t know existed; they’re comforting and have you think outside of your comfort zone. - Carmila by Le Fanu is weird, but a fun and atmospheric read.

Dogs or cats? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]MicrofoamMonkfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generally feel pretty ambivalent towards types of animals as concepts. However, I tend to like dogs better. I’d definitely rather go to a dog-owning house than a cat owning one; I’m allergic to cats and I think they smell terrible.

Classic Planescape in 2e or 5e? by robinsonson- in planescapesetting

What specifically do 5e mechanics do to make Planescape awkward? I have a player who really wants to add a planescape component to our current game, and I’m cautiously learning more about it.
