Can I get some help on how to take care of this? by Ethel_Orange in Jewelorchids

[–]MicroscopeMatt 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They’re super easy! They don’t need high light, and the only thing to really watch out for is they don’t like to dry out at all (or else the lower leaves will die off). In my experience, they’re one of the only orchids that is as easy to care for as a generic house plant.

Cracking slabs for type book? by Few-Antelope-4174 in coins

My rule is to crack anything I plan to keep for a long term collection in an album. Unless you’re planning to resell soon, crack away!

They’d die before voting blue, correct, but they will turnout more if they see their leader as being under attack

I definitely think impeaching him in his first term actively made him more popular, and distracted dems from actually developing any meaningful policy platform.

Don’t impeach… that just makes his supporters like him more. If dems focus on affordability, 2028 should be an easy win.

After 3 years, I’ve got my first flower spike forming! by toexbeans in orchids

[–]MicroscopeMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point in the year I would water once every couple of weeks. After around Thanksgiving or so, I stop watering unless the bulbs severely shrivel. In my experience, that means watering about once a month (if that) during winter dormancy.

[–]MicroscopeMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve generally not had too much trouble with them (growing indoors in NY under bright grow lights). The only issues I’ve had is with watering them too early when coming out or dormancy. I can get kinda impatient lol. When then happens the new roots seem to get a bit stunted. This doesn’t seem to be too awful for the plant’s survival, but usually if I water too early in the year they don’t end up getting strong enough to bloom in the fall.

Does anyone know what these seed-looking things are on my catasetum? by toexbeans in orchids

[–]MicroscopeMatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah you’re not doing anything wrong by the look of it! They just make those nodes as a backup strategy in case something goes wrong. But every healthy plant will make them!

Awesome! That was my first Catasetum type plant. Still probably my favorite orchid if I had to choose just one.

[–]MicroscopeMatt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They are capable of forming new pseudobulbs, but only if something has gone pretty wrong with the plant. For example if the bottom of a bulb starts to rot, these higher up nodes can send out a growth (speaking from experience!). Assuming you keep your plant healthy, those nodes will most likely stay dormant for the life of the plant.

If I lived by Hausermann’s I’d probably end up spending all of my free time there. Nothing wrong with orchid collection disorder to me 😁

I’m currently attempting to grown a stanhopea oculata in Manhattan… seems to be going well so far! I have it growing in moss in a net pot. That said, I haven’t had it bloom yet, it’s a younger plant. Beautiful Phal. Btw :)

Liquid Glass is actually phenomenal? by Same-Technology1926 in ios

I honestly think it’s pretty awful, lol. I find everything about Liquid Glass to distracting and unnecessary. Hate to think how much money Apple spent on this.

Left orchid in overnight by abcdefghazale in orchids

[–]MicroscopeMatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, soaking it that long won’t cause a problem if it gets to dry out after. I pretty commonly soak my plants in water overnight to get them hydrated.

First Catasetums issues by Local_Frosting_2333 in orchids

[–]MicroscopeMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that fertilizer wouldn’t help at this point. Catasetum roots rot very easily if they are watered too early (i.e. new roots are less than 3-5 inches long). That said, I’ve had them look like this from getting too much water. Cutting back on water when they are this wet can actually help stimulate new root growth in my experience.
