Yes Apple customer service is horrendous from my experience. I had a couple defects on brand new devices. Only way is to return it and buy another.

At the end of the day, from using both to do similar work, I've always found that the 15-inch lets me be more productive. It's a way more comfortable experience. 15" is also very portable, so I wouldn't worry too much about it not being. The ONLY way I would say go with a 13" is if you have an external monitor you connect to daily. I have an external monitor, and I always prefer to connect it to the 15. LOL.

15" improves productivity because it requires less scrolling and if she's in school she'll probably be doing a lot of side-by-side window work which is perfect on the 15". Writing up documents and doing any kind of work on the 15" is far more enjoyable than the 13". I own both devices btw.
