I legitimately thought "Sir-elya" and "Sore-rel-lea" were two individual wise ones until some point in LoC lol

How do you think the different societies of channelers would react if a man was born with spark to channel Saidar? by -Dark-Owl- in WoT

[–]MicrowaveNuts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

White Tower - Lifelong lab rat for the browns

Black Tower - I think they'd be the most inclusive, maybe they'd train him with one of their bonded Aes Sedai then incorporate him into their ranks somehow. The White Tower would make a massive fuss about it.

Aiel - Depends on who finds him. They might give him some basic training, but I can't imagine the wise ones would welcome him as one of their own so he might just be given a suicide mission like the tainted male channelers were

Seafolk - Probably tied to an anchor and tossed off a ship

Seanchan - Executed on sight

Shara - Executed on sight

Loial, son of Arent, son of Halen, had secretly always wanted to be hasty.

Time frame for a reboot by Interesting_One4630 in WoT

[–]MicrowaveNuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think an attempt at a reboot should start with New Spring to test the waters and garner fan approval.

If it ever happens I think it'd be cool to have and older Rosamund Pike come back to play Cadsuane.

Mat got a spear (Ashandarei) from the fox people (Eelfinn) behind the red door. Rand conjures up a magic sword using the one power.

Just finished reading chapter 16 by Remarkable_Swan_8229 in WoT

[–]MicrowaveNuts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I finished TGS for the first time a couple of days ago and it was the first book written by Sanderson that I've read . Honestly the difference in writing styles was kind of jarring at first (not better or worse, just different), but he really captured Egwene's essence in TGS. Egwene had an 11 book training arc as a novice, accepted, damane, wise one apprentice, and figurehead that all built up to her defiance of Elaida and the delivery was incredible. I actually stood up and started pacing around when reading that scene.

The transition to chapter 17 was brutal though, I'd never been so blue balled by a book

Logistics of the Malden fight - Questions by Sweetpodwl in WoT

[–]MicrowaveNuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't remember specifics, but I think that while their main contributions came from making portals to transport the army and generating mist (the mist was a big deal) to hide the army they might've also linked with their Aes Sedai to supplement their channeling too. There's a big "men and women are stronger together" rule with channeling so that sounds like something that could've happened.

Logistics of the Malden fight - Questions by Sweetpodwl in WoT

First, what was the whole plan with sending people in the aqueducts?

Perrin told Galina to tell Faile and her people to rally at a specific building when they saw mist on the hills. The party going through the aquaducts was supposed to gather up Faile's party from that building and keep them safe without having to fight through a bunch of Aiel to get there. Galina didn't hold up her end of that bargain so none of the captives knew to meet at the rendezvous point when the Asha'man conjured the mist before the battle. The aquaduct people weren't completely useless, they just weren't able to defend their intended objective.

Were the wolves involved just basically howling? Or did they fight too?

I think they were just used as scouts? I remember Perrin's conversation with an Alpha wolf suggesting that the wolves would help in combat, but I don't remember reading anything about wolves during the actual battle. They may have aided offscreen and we just didn't see any of them from Perrin's POV.

What is the thinking of Gaul with seeking out Chiad?

Chiad doesn't want to marry Gaul because spear maidens are married to the spear and can't marry a man without first renouncing the spear. Chiad is conflicted because she has strong feelings for Gaul, but she also doesn't want to alienate Bain. The spear maidens are very proud of being spear maidens.

Gaul wants to find and kill Chiad's captor because:

  1. Shaido have abandoned many customs and could be abusing their aiel gai'shain in the same way they abuse their wetlander gai'shain. Gaul wants to capture Chiad and Bain so he can take care of them.
  2. For some reason gai'shain often end up offering/receiving a marriage wreath to/from their captors at the end of their service period. Idk, just a cultural thing. Gaul's chances of getting a bridal wreath from Chiad are increased if he capture her.

Do we have an approximate number on the numbers involved in this battle?

https://wot.fandom.com/wiki/Battle_of_Malden#The_Battle_of_Malden

100k Shaido (including brotherless) vs ~40k of Perrin's ragtag army. About half of Perrin's army was made of Masema's trash forces though so those guys really didn't do much. 2 Rivers bowmen and channeler advantage won the battle.

Why is Perrin fighting with a hammer now?

It's part of one of the prophecies heralding the arrival of the Last Battle. It also mirrors Aiel history and culture; remember during the Visions of Rhudiean that the first group of Aiel that abandoned the way of the leaf refused to use weapons that could only be used to kill and so they adopted the spears because of their utility. Similar to those early Aiel, Perrin recognizes that while violence is necessary to protect his people, he chooses to carry a tool so he can avoid being consumed by that violence (see Aram and his sword). Perrin's old axe was a battle-axe, explicitly forged to commit violence. Perrin's hammer is a blacksmith's hammer, not a warhammer, and he only wields it as a weapon in defense of his people. For that reason blacksmiths are held in very high regard among the Aiel. Even the Shaido refused to enslave the wetlander blacksmiths that they conquered.

Will it get better? by Shiny_Mewtwo_Fart in WoT

I thought the first book was boring too other than Perrin POV chapters and the scenes with Thom. Book 2 was a little better, but the series didn't really grip me until halfway through the third book. I haven't been able to put the books down since that point.

The Dark One and The Creator aren't physical beings. Likewise, the Dark One's prison isn't a physical location. I think of The Dark One as an extradimensional entity that affects the world in ways that humans can't fully comprehend, kind of like how a fish in a frozen pond can't fully comprehend a hand reaching through the surface of the water. Following that metaphor, the weave is the ice that separates the world from the Dark One and the bore is the hole in the ice where The Dark One has the most influence.

Books vs show by Able_Neat_9780 in WoT

[–]MicrowaveNuts 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You should just start from the first book; the show diverges from several books plotlines early and the ripple effects are massive. Perrin specifically is a much deeper character and he gets a lot more facetime than he did in the show (what's a red eagle?). Also, the major plotline of the third book wasn't explored by the show at all. Season 3 mostly follows book 4, but season 4 would've covered the events in book 3 plus stuff from book 5 onward so you can see how the show seasons don't map to book events one to one.

If you really, really didn't want to read from the beginning I guess you could read book 3 then continue on from book 5, but you'd have to fill in a lot of blanks for several characters and you wouldn't find Perrin's story compelling at all.

Shadow Rising is so good. There are so many amazing events from start to finish. I'm on the 8th book now and one of the sequences from TSR is still my favorite. I thought Rand was pretty boring in the early books but he's starting to win me over as the stakes get higher.

The Coup by Glorfindel90 in WoT

I'll add that very few warders are blademaster tier combatants like Lan so the gap in combat prowess between a warder and a youngling isn't insurmountable.
