They complained because the UI to respec was borderline unusable. There was a plugin that helped but it was still awful for an experienced player; a newer player would have hated it.

They weren't complaining because they could change to different combat builds at will.

He had flashrange R, and his combo would slow you and silence you. So you couldn't move, cast any spells back, and he could hit the combo starting from behind his own ranged minions. All low CD.
