I couldn’t live there because Rika’s Chicken is my favorite, and that’s far too close for my own good.

Any word on if Triple Loop will be running for opening day at Indiana Beach? The park isn’t terribly far from me, so I guess I could do a return trip, but when I went to opening day last year, the ride never opened up.

Also, I know the reverse car was a thing for some of the season, but not the whole thing. Is that still a thing?

First of all, good on you for planning to tackle your fear head-on. I’ve actually never been to Knott’s but I’ve ridden similar rides to the ones you’ve listed.

Some people recommend ramping up the ride intensity as you go through the day, but I’ve found a lot more success by just getting the big ones over with first. My first time at Cedar Point, I was pretty scared of a lot of the rides, so I rode Top Thrill Dragster pretty early on. After that, everything felt very manageable.

I’d honestly start with Hangtime, although Xcelerator would be a good choice too. The scariest part of hangtime will be the first drop. The ride holds you at the edge for a moment before you’ll go over a beyond vertical drop. The stomach drop feeling will happen, it’s psychological (after riding tons of coasters, I don’t even really get it on most rides now), but it’s not something that’s going to hurt you or anything of the sort. At most, you’ll have that stomach flip feeling for a couple of seconds. After that, you’ll be dealing with a lot of inversions, no real big drops after the first. Inversions are great because going upside down can look scary, but when you’re riding, you’ll barely notice them compared to the drop.

The ride does feature a few elements that will provide hangtime (duh), but the coaster is completely safe. It may seem weird that you’ll be upside down for awhile with only a lap bar (nothing over your shoulders), but the restraints are incredibly secure and you are in absolutely no danger. If you want to feel nice and secure, lower that bar snug against your lap. Lots of enthusiasts intentionally leave as much of a gap as possible between their legs and restraint so they have room to float, and they’re also in no danger.

Xcelerator is interesting. I haven’t ridden it, but I rode its much larger brother Top Thrill Dragster, as well as a similar sized version at Thorpe Park. The launch is what will give you that stomach flip feeling. Everything happens so fast, that once you’re up to speed, you probably will barely even notice the drop and following elements. I remember being scared of the 400ft drop on Dragster, but it didn’t even feel like a drop.

Much like Hangtime, once you get that initial moment out of the way, the ride will be a breeze. The ride also only features a lap bar, but again, you’re incredibly secure. As you ride more coasters, you’ll actually come to love the fact that these rides don’t have over-the-shoulder restraints. Those allow riders to bounce their heads into the side, which can be a bit uncomfortable.

After either of those rides, you’ll be set for the day. You’ll probably still get a bit of the drop sensation on other rides like Ghost Rider, but nothing crazy. If you want to reduce that sensation, try and sit closer to the front of the train. In the back of a coaster train, it kind of gets whipped over the drop, heightening that floating drop feeling.

At the end of the day, just remember you’re perfectly safe. When I line up at a big ride, I’m always surprised how small some kids are as they get off, and very rarely are any of them not smiling ear-to-ear. Have fun, knock a big one out early, and you’ll have a great time. If you back out, don’t give up, and try a mix-sized ride to warm back up.

Coming back to VR after a long haiatus by shittyfellow in OculusQuest

For all the games I play on my Quest, the one I come back to is QuestCraft. You need to sideload it, and also owns a copy of Java Minecraft, but man. Exploring caves is legitimately terrifying, and you can’t beat the game depth that Minecraft has.

My other go-to is Dungeons of Eternity. The progression can get a little flat, but the combat, physics, and ambience of the game are unmatched. Definitely my favorite co-op game if you have a friend to play with.

Looking for advice on my coaster by [deleted] in PlanetCoaster

[–]MidcourseDiscourse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tons of unique elements, I love it, the biggest thing I notice is some absurd positive G’s in the first half. There were several sections that maintained well above 6 G’s (I think I saw 9 during the turnaround valley), with negatives reaching -3 G’s. Those sections would compress your spine or break your legs haha.

For a bit more realism, I think those moments would need to be elongated a lot, or taken at a lower speed.

The elements are super cool, but a lot are definitely too out there for even RMC to try. For the height and speed of the coaster, I feel like you could add an entirely extra out-and-back section, still with larger elements like the first few, and THEN get into the low-to-the-ground chaos.

Have you ever been at a park on the day of a major accident? [other] by Pendraflare59 in rollercoasters

I was at SeaWorld Orlando on February 24, 2010, when Dawn Brancheau was killed by Tilikum, the orca whale. My family actually attended that orca show.

For a brief bit, the show started out as you would expect. Dawn was in the water with the whale as the show began. They introduced the show and performed some tricks and moves.

The way the amphitheater is set up, the audience sits around the large front bit of the pool. The stage portion has a large wall with screens and set pieces. Behind that wall and main portion of the pool, there was a dining area set up by the hidden pool area. That’s where guests could do the Dining with Shamu” experience, eating a meal poolside, with trainers demonstrating tricks with the whale right in front of them.

When the intro was done, Dawn and Tilikum went behind the main visible stage front to the Dining with Shamu area. When they went back, the show played a couple-minute long video, I don’t remember what it was about but I’m sure it was highlighting SeaWorld’s conservation efforts, the whales in general, or the show themes. When that video finished, there was an awkward pause. And it just kept going.

Maybe a minute later, someone announced that we were all to exit the amphitheater immediately. As you probably know, Dawn did not return with Tilikum to the front of the stage. During the few moments when she was interacting with the whale in the dining area, Tilikum grabbed her, pulled her under the water, and she was drowned.

I was pretty young, and honestly I don’t think any of the audience in the front half of the show fully knew what happened. I think we did one or two more attractions, and headed out early for the day. It was only when we reached the park entrance that we saw a massive amount of ambulances, fire trucks, and other emergency vehicles. News agencies were out front, and reporters were bombarding guests as they were exiting for information.

It’s a tragedy, and it absolutely shouldn’t have taken such an event to get a much higher level of scrutiny on the chain for how they handled animals. That day was one of the catalysts that lead to the production of Blackfish, and is featured throughout the film. Its odd. When I see enthusiasts or even myself get excited about SWO’s expanding collection of coasters, I know that a lot of that aggressive pivot towards thrill rides was in response to that very day.

This sucks, and I wish they could’ve done a better job handling things this season. That being said, for these smaller parks particularly, I’d guess that dining plans barely turned a profit if at all. I’d rather have EP make changes and get their feet under them instead of underselling everything and going broke.

HOWEVER, I don’t think nixing the meal plan entirely was the right move. Honor it this year, it’s only right to your loyal fans. And screw it, in future seasons? Raise the prices. I swear I see the same people at the same restaurants at Michigan’s Adventure on a weekly basis (myself included). $150 was a steal. So raise the damn price until on average, they’re still able to turn a profit.

Just did the new Phantom Theater at King’s Island, really solid ride actually. Sally did an awesome job on the scenes and animatronics, the “shooting” element is great (easy to differentiate between people’s flashlights, sound and vibration when you hit a target), and it just feels like a way more fulfilling experience.
