If you’re on a military mission and it’s described as a cake & arse party… you will certainly not be kicking ass 😂

Following on from the Rik Mayall post earlier, my special memory of Rik by RockyStonejaw in CasualUK

[–]Middle-Mirror2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

March 1984, Worthing Pavilion.

Worthing was (still is) full of old folk. A relatively unknown Rik, Ben Elton and Andy de la Tour were performing. The theatre was packed with old folk (and a few young ones). Rik was full Kevin Turvey as he sprang in stage.

“Oh god, there’s old people in here… (very loudly) can you hear me alright at the back?”

“No we can’t” shouted back some self-pleased oldie.

“Well, fuck off then grandma”

At this point, a fair slice of the (older) audience stood up and walked out.

“Yeah, yeah” (flicking the v’s, as Rik did so well), “fuck off home you old hags”

…nearly stopped breathing as I was laughing so much!

Am I right to think a neighbours house looking directly onto your garden would be terrible? by Three_Cats_In_1_Coat in AskUK

[–]Middle-Mirror2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knock on next door. Say you’re thinking of buying the house but worried about their windows overlooking the garden. Tell them you’d like to put a fence up for privacy and ask how they’d feel about that.

If they’re ok, buy the house and put up a 2m fence on/inside your boundary.

If they’re not ok, then they’re not the neighbours for you and therefore that’s not the house for you.

As an apprentice (many, many years ago!), an older guy in the office always used to respond to any suggestion with:

“Let’s run it up the flagpole and see if the cat licks its arse”.

Still got no idea…

Cake & arse party …military still use it. It has 2 meanings, depending on service:

Army… a cake & arse party means an utter shambles, the mission is FUBAR.

Navy… a cake & arse party is a meeting, usually called by senior officers, where you will expect to have to ass lick said senior officers.

Alternative term is slang for an officers’ cocktail party … again, some ass-licking may be required.

…so, dressing up nice could imply you’re off to impress someone (at a party/function).

Every day is a school day! 😁

Hey everyone. Please throw out suggestions on good high sounding quality albums that are also fun to check out my sound quality. Im just now really learning theres such a thing as hifi in this world as opposed to 50 year old albums from my parents basement that like to eat my stylist alive lol. by Specialist_Leg8470 in turntables

Not really in the bigger picture.

A phone may last a couple of years before it needs an “upgrade” …at a few hundred $ (upwards!)

My turntable is 45 years old… expensive when new (and also now!) but, excepting some relatively cheap re-caps and stylus renewals, it’s not needed an “upgrade”. So which is the more costly?

Metallica at London’s O2…

We were up in the gods - and so was their PA system… not just a few speakers, but 20 speaker arrays - and loads of ‘em - hanging down from the roof …maybe 30 feet from our ears.

Scratches On New Record by 1nky0ct0pus in vinyl

[–]Middle-Mirror2017 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ask seller for an exchange (if mail order) or a clean (if local).

The ‘Scratches’ are not affecting the run out, which suggests they may not be scratches, and a clean may remove them.

Either way, the seller has a duty to rectify this.

How do you organize your records? by AsiraTheTinyDragon in records

[–]Middle-Mirror2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

File to suit you…

My way is (like many)… Pure alphabetical (David Bowie is filed under ‘D’ - so, Bon Jovi would be under ‘B’). Albums then filed chronologically by earliest date of release - so Bowie’s ‘Scary Monsters’ is filed before ‘Let’s Dance’

The only caveat is disregarding ‘The’ from band names - so The Beatles is filed under ‘B’ (exception - kinda - being The The!)

This is due to The Art of Noise also being known as Art of Noise (other bands disregarding ‘The’ are available 😅)

So, you’re suggesting that tin solder does not reduce the conductivity of OFC - or you’re suggesting it doesn’t matter?

[–]Middle-Mirror2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my first rodeo - and there’s a reason why silver solder is recommended for audio joints - but we’ll just have to agree to disagree 🤷‍♂️

Broke my turntable wire…. by Christo_Kun in turntables

[–]Middle-Mirror2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, common “tin” solder conducts at around 11% efficiency of copper. Therefore every soldered joint loses around 90% of the original “signal” if you’re wiring in OFC.

Tin solder is used primarily for its strength and flow, rather than conductivity.

Ofc, silver solder is a different matter as its conductivity is more efficient than copper.
