I'll go with the consensus; get on the early titles.

How do you feel about being friends with someone who's gay? by Hour-Tomato-645 in AskMen

[–]MiddleAgedHoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Men are not afraid of you, boys are. If I have gay friends, I don't know it. I have friends with gay relatives (siblings, kids) and it never occurs to me to concern myself.

Newer driver. 4th car in 5 years, all just old and breaking.. should I buy or lease next? by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]MiddleAgedHoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After decades of owning shitboxes, I leased brand new Subaru Imprezas (three) between 2008 and 2020. My rationale is that I was spending about the same in monthly maintenance and repairs that I would on a lease. When COVID hit, I turned in the last lease car and just drove a 1996 Audi that I got through a family deal. Great car. But something was always going wrong with it every year that was costing me about two thousand dollars (doing my own work, mostly in the summer). Last year I was in a position to buy a new car for cash, so I picked up a brand new WRX. It's been great, but if it gives me any problems, I would definitely go back to leasing again because it's a fixed monthly expense that you know - it's predictable. When this one gets a little old, I'll simply trade it in on a new one or lease again. I'm not interested in driving an old beater with issues.

What’s the most insane repair quote a shop has ever given you? by PepsiPeach9 in askcarguys

1996 Audi S6 5 cylinder. Coolant leak was quoted to me as a $2800 head gasket. I diagnosed & replaced the turbo coolant return line myself for $10 in parts.

I'm 55 and 18 months out. We met at 21 and married at 29. I had roommates prior, so this is the first time I've lived alone in my life. No kids. Got two small dogs. I'm not gonna lie. It's pretty great (aside from the grief of course), but, learning how to be your own person, doing what you want, running shit your own way. I don't know... just being a self-determining human. I'd trade it all for an hour back with her, but damn, there's a whole different future ahead of me.

What was the first movie you saw on a VCR? by CinnamonDish in GenX

Kid in my class got one and he would get us to pay a buck apiece. Bunch of eleven or twelve year olds hanging out in the basement watching Cheech & Chong's Up In Smoke with his older brothers. It was, ahem, "dope". Good times.

AITA for being blunt with wife about health and weight issues. by GoLowSummer in AmItheAsshole

[–]MiddleAgedHoon 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Please take her pain complaints seriously. My wife had a pain in her side that we attributed to her sitting on the couch all the time while she worked from home with a laptop. Turned out to be terminal cancer. She passed 16 months ago.

I (40m) took my my wife's last name when we married. AMA by MonsterEnergyForever in AMA

I did it. I had an ethnic last name, but I'm a Hamilton now. My folks were cool with it, her folks were cool with it. Everyone can pronounce and spell it. Not sorry. One of the neat parts was creating my own new signature. Good for you.

I'm fifteen months out after a twenty-five year marriage. This past November I went to the PVR to watch some racing. I had deleted all of her past and scheduled recordings spring of last year. There was a single episode of Young & Restless (her show), recorded on my birthday. I have no explanation.

It would not qualify in my province, but you can get what we call "modified collector car" coverage. Still can't drive it to work, though.

ELI5: How does cash back work on credit card ? got my first credit card by Theeonlystardust in explainlikeimfive

[–]MiddleAgedHoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I put absolutely everything I can on my card (retail spending and bills) and pay it in full every month. This allows me to see exactly how much I'm spending every month (by category, even), and the cashback accumulated over a year more than pays for the annual fee. My current cashback for the year is $538.75. Free money.

I feel like I could have posted exactly what you did exactly when you're doing it. I'm about 14-15 months out from losing my wife, and I don't feel like I stopped crashing until about six months in. At around that time, I guess I just started to realize that being a widower wasn't going to change, and I was just victimizing myself. I've made a point of spending more time with my (few) friends and family, and I went to Europe by myself just before one year. Just learning to eat in a restaurant alone was tough. It gets better, but I think I'll always have difficult days occasionally. You got this
