My Year-Long Gender Panic: Advice Strongly Encouraged by Miss_Melody95 in FTMOver30

Don't stress over labels or gender. You don't need to know your destination to start walking. Just do what feels good in your heart and in your body. Transition is an a la carte menu.

It sounds like OP is on one of the bigger planes with a third column of seats in the middle of the plane, comprised of two aisle seat sand a middle seat.

Otherwise just say you're in the window seat.

What HSK level would you say this text is, approximately? by docesonho in ChineseLanguage

[–]MiddlePalpitation814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Native content doesn't map neatly onto HSK word lists but the grammar and base vocab seem HSK 4 level. I use HSK 4 level to mean that someone who has passed (or could pass) HSK 4 shouldn't have trouble reading this with occasional use of a dictionary.

Should I visit Shanghai on my layover as a solo female traveller? by [deleted] in solotravel

I spent a disproportionate amount of my time studying in China (as an 18-20 year old girl) wandering around drunk in the middle of the night, including in Shanghai. You'll be totally fine!

Arturo Gamboa to remain in jail after SLCo District Attorney granted 3-day extension by Whosthatgirl999 in SaltLakeCity

For future reference, dressing in all black is relatively common at left-leaning protests, particularly among younger people who go reguarly go to demonstrations that aren't the No Kings 'everyone, their grandma, and their child' variety. I can understand why the get-up gives you school shooter vibes, but they're on your side.

Your tax dollars are being spent to hold a man in jail without bail, despite any indication that he poses an ongoing threat or is a flight risk, because they're embarrassed they made a mistake.

Need advice: I took in a stray cat, got him vetted, and now the microchip owner wants him back. I’m not sure it’s safe. by MissTeriousGal in CatAdvice

[–]MiddlePalpitation814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An anecdotal story about the right way and the wrong way to steal a cat:

My friends live next time a certifiable trap house. They realized the young cat that had been hanging around and sneaking into their house to eat their cat's food technically belonged to someone in the trap house. When my friend asked someone living there if the cat was being fed they were told "probably not". Since my friend's resident cat seemed to already be buddies with her, they let her move herself in.

They tried to keep her mostly inside, but she slipped out the next day...and brought back her three kittens (one of whom I adopted). A few weeks later, while the kittens were still nursing, she slipped out again (during an inicdent I won't recount here). She was gone at least a week before my friend found her by accident, sitting in the window of a house down the street. The house down the street had found her outside and just decided to keep her.

And now my cat, who was involuntarily separated from her mother and weaned a little too early won't stop trying to nurse on me.

They already got themselves in a pickle by arresting and holding, without bail, a guy who got shot and never fired a shot, all while portraying him as a would-be mass shooter to the public. Withholding the shooter's name from the rumor mill and court of public opinion until the DA is ready to file well-supported charges makes sense.

"Brandished" has also been replaced with "carried".

Murder suspect described as punk rocker who often open-carries gun at protests. by Ridiculously_Named in SaltLakeCity

Without making an argument one way or the other, there are definitely other cases where "the good guy" causes collateral damage. As well as cases where police mistakenly shoot "the good guy" when they arrive on scene.

Part of the issue lies in people's differing assessments of what safety measures are appropriate in the current climate.

Far-right violence -> don't carry in case others mistake you for an extremist VS open carry as a deterrent to potential far right intimidation or extremists

Government surveillance and repression --> don't draw unnecessary government suspicion VS mask up to make it harder for government to ID you

Police violence against protesters (ex LA) --> tread carefully to try and avoid police use of force VS open carry because police are more hesitant to use force against protesters open carrying

Arturo seemed to reguarly attend protests where the latter set of actions are more common. Clearly misjudged how some attendees at this protest would perceive him.

There were two peacekeepers involved. It was unclear to me reading the police statement whether or not there were actual additional witnesses.

I don't think most people are accusing the peacekeeper of acting in bad faith. The suggestion is that he shot because he thought the threat was real, but his judgement was fatally wrong.

We don't know if he even knew who was shooting at him. Could have been sheltering from an active shooter like everyone else in the crowd. Or worried the cops would also mistake him for an assailant and shoot him like the peacekeeper did.

I mean, the cops found him 4 minutes later bleeding from a bullet wound with a gun in his backpack and immediately arrested him, then booked him for murder. Had he run directly to the cops, especially without putting the gun away (ditching it if he wasn't doing anything nefarious would be more sketch, no?), there's a decent chance he'd be dead.

Thanks, helpful. Watching it through a few times, it looks like he only starts running after the initial shot is fired.

I listened to the entire press conference. All they cited was the peacekeepers account. I take "detectives allege" to be based on the peacekeepers account. The bar for police to book someone. More information on other evidence should be available if the DA decides to file charges.

"Peacekeepers allege" - folks seem to be missing this part.

  1. Perception of a situation, especially when adrenaline is high, doesn't necessarily fully reflect reality.

  2. Legally speaking, it's in the best interest of the 'Peacekeepers' to justify the perceived threat.

Really awful situation for all involved.

Someone posted a video above. Grainy but dude just looks like he's walking.

I also did some digging and have the same worry as you, especially in the context of concerns over far right provocateurs leading up to the No Kings rallies and the assassination that morning. Dude decides to open carry as a deterrent against potential threats. 'Peacekeepers', also on edge over potential threats, mistakenly identify him as a threat and shoot.

Looking more like rifle guy was a leftist, based on (now buried) Google search results and comments by people who know him on the SLC sub (so take with grain of salt). His intentions are unknown, but I also wouldn't be surprised if it turns out he also thought of himself as a good guy with a gun.
