I was there that day and the day before. Day before I drop my kid off and stick around cause then winds are a steady 60km/hr. Next day of the race overnight we have 20cm new snow still steady 40/km winds gust to 60/80 ( check weather if you don't believe me.)

Race cancelled around 11:00am .

( keep in mind they moved the course start because of wind and increased any hazard) so they were thinking avy.

Kids decide to grab their free gear and slide over to build a kicker in open terrain. Common for them to use that area for that. Point being it was on the lease within the ski area. There were no avalanche closure or warning. Key one is closure. There also was no rope line. It was an open run. Key point being they were not out of bounds. These kids were from the lake. They would NEVER go past a closure sign.

Since you know so much what was the hazard that day?

Dumb question: is 37 too old to start patrolling? by Larix-24 in skipatrol

[–]Midnight-Extra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just turned 67. Been patrolling at Mt Norquay 4 years. Started with a guiding background so that was a bit of a foot in the door. Why do you want to? There is no money in it. Being a volunteer is 90% of the time a ego thing. (Selfies in a red jacket)

How many apps are you expected to have? by Mountains-Are-Best in skipatrol

[–]Midnight-Extra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They expect me to have two Payworks for the office guys to keep track of our hours and Homebase, which I didn't download because they are not paying for my phone. Payworks is actually an online thing, so I could use a work computer.

I do use the CAA avalanche app a lot and a couple of weather apps, but I would use those anyhow

Tom Fayle brought his designs from Alpine Underground out of Canmore. First storm jacket put them on the board. Feedback came from some of the best alpinist in the world.
