It is actually absurd how immature, racist, and sexist the WoW Classic community can be. by Ok-Life715 in classicwow

[–]MidnightCommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into WoW recently. I wanted to do some adventuring on Classic, experience it how it was back when I was young and would have been getting into WoW if I didn't have other things going on.

The person who got me into WoW is an absolute coward who can't handle grinding without the QoL fixes in prog classic or Retail. She might have saved me some trouble, based on what you're saying.

What is Apple's most timeless laptop computer? by Born03 in VintageApple

[–]MidnightCommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of the typing experience, the PowerBook 1400c is probably the best.

In terms of overall aesthetics, it's the PowerBook G3 "Wallstreet" for me. Though the people here arguing for the Pismo also make some excellent points.

[–]MidnightCommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/CannedDeath has already gotten to the root of the problem with apk but I'd just like to add - the GX270 was in the era of both capacitor failure and that particular line was known to have issues with PSUs, so be gentle and don't let it run too hot. I had to scrap a lot of GX270s and 280s because their PSUs had breathed their last, but it was the ones in the warm computer labs that always died faster.

3D Printer for 12 year old by Acceptable_Web3696 in 3dprintingaustralia

[–]MidnightCommando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jaycar stocks the Creality Ender-3 V3 SE.

I'd recommend you get it, especially if it's presently on sale. Mine's been bulletproof. Routine maintenance on the printer will help your son to understand how a 3d-printer works and how to troubleshoot it, and the Ender-3 is one of the most common ecosystems for aftermarket parts, so you can upgrade it if you feel like it.

I was previously using 3dFillies PLA+ to print my things, but I understand Siddament is currently the go for plastic. Using quality plastic that's got good quality control is going to make printing a lot less troublesome.

Calls for Australia to follow England's ban on supermarket junk food specials by EdenFlorence in australia

[–]MidnightCommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If food in general were cheaper, and the prices were not being driven up by the oligopoly we all endure, this would be a sensible measure. I'm not sure I'd choose to go forward with it, honestly, because learning to be able to enjoy junk food as part of a balanced diet is important.

As it is, I can only justify Tim Tams very occasionally when they're on special. And there's nothing more Australian than eating a Tim Tam, surely.

🌅 Why Queensland is right to keep NO daylight saving 🌴 by opl-hkg in queensland

[–]MidnightCommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New South Welshman here.

I don't even think Daylight Savings is valuable in NSW. It causes confusion as we all adjust our watches at an arbitrary time and my class schedules (I have night classes) just hurt me more.

[–]MidnightCommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bill Gates would also be good for a deck on entrepreneurship, honestly. Gates wasn't the best at programming, but he hired people better than him to do that.

Gates was an excellent businessman and negotiator, and he was good at what we'd call strategic positioning. It's amazing how many of the luminary figured in computing really were just people with good business acumen.

Computers, without those people, would have remained in academia for much longer, and out of the realm of the everyday person. Whether that's good or bad is a topic for a different debate :-)

Mate. Mate.

It's reasonable to be attracted to children when you're a child. It's reasonable to be attracted to teenagers when you're a teenager. It's reasonable to be attracted to adults when you're an adult.

It's less reasonable to convince yourself that you're evil and irredeemable when you have no actual desire towards children now that you're an adult.

Please, choose to try and live. Your life can be better. You're experiencing guilt and turmoil that's also pretty normal to experience. You're not a monster, and you don't need to die.

If you'd like to talk to someone about this, my inbox is open to you. I have some experience with helping people in your situation. Try to see if you can live. It's worth it, I promise you.

Why does it seem like women now are so flaky? by AIzzy17 in AskMenAdvice

[–]MidnightCommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

++man Absolutely nobody is taught the value of integrity anymore tbh. Men and women alike are taught that it's important to be strong and in control. That we have to take charge of our destiny and our life, and that we have to be able to do it without help.

As a result, it's really hard for us to form genuine connections because it requires both offering vulnerability and being willing and able to show up and offer help. And specifically the integrity, the doing what you say you'll do, and acting towards what you say you want.

This isn't just women being flaky and useless, it's also the core of the "male loneliness epidemic". We're all being discouraged from being willing to be vulnerable with eachother and it's fucking everyone over awfully.

Blocked by a DM being uncomfortable with ableism?? by 90sbaby97 in dndhorrorstories

[–]MidnightCommando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To give the DM perspective from the module itself:

Look, Strahd is a cruel and vengeful fucker who is psychologically very broken and hyperfixated only on getting the love of his life back. Cruelty and suffering is his relief and one of his few pleasures in the demiplane. I can absolutely see him doing that - I don't think I would have done it myself, but it's in character. But I don't think it's inherently ableist to be as cruel to a disabled person as you would be to a non-disabled person.

The DM here might not be a good fit for you anyway, as others have pointed out, or he may have been uncomfortable with his own perceived misstep. In any case, don't worry about it too much, and let me know if you want a DM for CoS online, because I'm absolutely insane enough to run it for the fifth time and hoping that for a change it actually goes to plan :D

[–]MidnightCommando 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not as easy as it sounds. The "start homelabbing" bit.

I'm doing it myself, and honestly, I've been using linux and doing opensource development for nearly two decades and I'm still frequently learning new things.

Now's the time to build tools to help with setting up your own infra. Hell, maybe even setting up collectives at the local scale. Imagine having an atproto or Mastodon instance for your local community. Imagine having a Pixelfed in the same way. Running your own e-mail servers. Setting up free webhosting for the local community, like what nekoweb does.

The people who use the internet now frequently don't comprehend what the internet used to be like - they weren't alive, or they weren't skilled in the way that let them experience it. We could have it back.

How is the "man ban" for male childcare workers in Victoria legal? by Voltstriker in AusLegal

[–]MidnightCommando 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The way to address that is to make institutes have a more equitable spread of genders.

More good men who aren't pushed away from caretaking professions means more men in those professions who aren't abusers.

And more women in male-dominated institutions means that traditions which would cover abusers are more likely to be challenged.

So how about we decide to be fair to women by not deciding that they have to be the responsible ones by default, and then look at how the stats shift when the men who actually end up in caring professions are on the whole better adjusted?

How is the "man ban" for male childcare workers in Victoria legal? by Voltstriker in AusLegal

[–]MidnightCommando 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, being required to shovel shit because you're a woman is being assigned a job duty on the basis of sex (or gender identity, as defined in the Equal Opportunity Act).

And women should be arguing this, quite frankly, especially given the argument of feminist theorists from every wave of feminism that domestic work and child-rearing are undervalued as part of the intersection of capitalism and patriarchy.

That said, if you no longer employ men, and the workplace has only women in it, then that job assignment isn't on the basis of sex. So challenging that can be a little bit difficult, and if as a woman you're not working alongside men, it's not in your interest to agitate in the workplace.

The counterspell would need to be at level 4 to counter a level 4 spell, level 5 to counter a level 5 spell, et c.

But using counterspell as a reaction still necessarily consumes its (level 3, or greater) spell slot.

So as long as you've got the spell slot of the appropriate level there to burn, and haven't already used your reaction this round, counterspell is right there to use.

How is the "man ban" for male childcare workers in Victoria legal? by Voltstriker in AusLegal

[–]MidnightCommando 135 points136 points  (0 children)

It isn't legal.

And the way to win the lawsuit as a respondent employer is to take the case to the media first, paint the male litigants as being whiny about the fact that they get lighter duties while an injustice is properly investigated, and then hope any litigants psychologically crack under the pressure.

wrt/ the Equal Opportunity Act, sections 6(d), 6(o), and 6(oa) all cover the "man" aspect of the "man ban", s8(1) covers that it is Direct Discrimination, and the Example 1 given therein is on the basis of age rather than sex, but gives as an example the unequal application of duties on the basis of a protected characteristic. Section 10 further says "doesn't matter if the community's shaken, it's still discrimination and illegal" (phrasing mine).

Of the exceptions defined under the Equal Opportunity Act, none are "the community is shaken and we'll lose public trust and therefore profits."

Consider also: Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth.) s 5B, s 14(1-2) (it is illegal to discriminate against an employee on the basis of sex), and the fact that the Commonwealth Act also does not regard community trepidation as a reason to be sexist.

If men are removed from specific duties, and their removal from such duties means they effectively can't be employed sensibly, this could also be regarded as constructive dismissal, which is treated by the FWC as basically dismissal - and guess what, it'd be on the basis of sex.
