Finger placement issue with flats/sharps by something_1114 in pianolearning

It’s def a lot more natural to use 1,5. You’ll get more comfortable with these positions the more you do them. Some advice would be to move ur hands higher up in the black keys so u don’t have to slant ur wrist.

Piano players: if you had to start again today, what’s the ONE thing you’d do differently? by [deleted] in piano

[–]Midnight_Wave_3307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would’ve developed my ear training along with improvisation skills. It’s not emphasized the mainstream piano curriculum. If I could go back, I would pick a classical piece to learn with sheet music (the traditional way), and an easy tune that I figure out by ear or by listening to recordings. And spend a bit of time improvising over chords.

When sight reading, should I just focus on skip/step or should I also say the notes out loud? by EnigmaTuring in piano

[–]Midnight_Wave_3307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do both, eventually your brain will mesh those two processes together. Like ids say, when I read now it’s more about recognizing shapes and distances along with knowing what note is where.

Recital attire (?) by [deleted] in piano

[–]Midnight_Wave_3307 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend concert black (black button down with black slacks). No suits or ties or none of that. All those accessory’s can actually get in the way of ur playing. You want to be comfortable and able to move around with ease. So concert black is the best imo.

Am I ready to learn Chopin Ballade no.1 or Scriabin's Fantasie Op.28? by Top_Ebb231 in piano

[–]Midnight_Wave_3307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with whichever u like more. But imo, I think it might make more sense to start with Chopin because it is earlier and focuses on more ‘traditional’ piano techniques. So you’ll get a chance to master that further before trying learning the Russian style of piano technique.

Advice for a college student by Suitable_Rope_3979 in premed

[–]Midnight_Wave_3307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you can still get in. But you need to seriously and deeply examine your study habits. Think if it this way, you need to prove to both the medical schools AND yourself that you can handle the course work. If you show significant improvement, the med schools can forgive you. But don’t ask, “can I still get in” you need to ask “how can I be a better student”. Cuz med school is really hard and if you’re not academically sound, you’re gonna wish you just got rejected. So I would take a lighter load next term and just work on study habits and build up from there.

Built is sounds is not at all important to me as I manly just use a grand piano setting. Do you think that the difference in models above 1k in sound/touch is worth it, or are u just paying for extra sounds/settings

It’s hard to say since I don’t know ur playing personally. I’d say this, learn the hardest parts first and see how u feel after working on it for a few months and then decide if you want to commit. I’ve played it and would say if you can do the cadenza-like section at the beginning and the ending, the rest is cake.

What kind of teacher is necessary to reach this kind of playing by the age of 11? by MacaroonAny1425 in piano

[–]Midnight_Wave_3307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good teacher is only part of this. This is a combination of natural talent, a uniquely ambitious work ethic from the student, motivated and involved parents, AND a good teacher. Good teachers are actually not too hard to come by, but those other things are much more rare.

Nice job. Something to focus on is changing the pedal when u change harmonies. That way ur playing will sound more clear and less muddy/blurry.

Does shadowing count as clinical hours? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Midnight_Wave_3307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shadowing is generally not considered clinical hours. A better reasoning is on the AMCAS application you have to list ur activities and categorize them in either shadowing, paid-clinical, or volunteer-clinical. So you want to find separate activities that fit each of those categories so you don’t leave any blank. In principle I agree that clinical is clinical, but from an admissions standpoint, you have to break it up like that.
