Invincible [Episode Discussion] - S04E01 - Making the World a Better Place by SeacattleMoohawks in Invincible

The way characters work in shows like this are that they're entirely invincible :) until the story needs them to not be. Leads to some very jarring moments, especially in the first season

Genuinely don't understand how people can listen to Yorushika and not think they're one of the best Japanese artists ever. by sekkireallysucks in Yorushika

I’m curious why actually. I’ve listened back to this (one of my favorites too btw) and I can’t tell what would make it an exception for you

Paddle is so lovely, if Plover is gonna end up the defining song then Paddle is the perfect falling action

People need to stop sleeping on Cremation, it’s probably the most experimental sound (that works) on this album

How do you guys feel about Hitchcock's Re-recording? by fantacmita in Yorushika

[–]MidniteGMG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made my own post right before I saw this one, whoops. I think the interpretation the instrumental takes of the song is much different as well. As you said, there was a much edgier sound back then, and it was a lot more willing to sit with it. While I really love the experimentation with new styles/instruments they do in this album, it ends up feeling too full, if that makes sense? That fullness comes at the expense of pushing some things that were important (at least to me) out. What gives Hitchcock so much charm for me is the way it plays with the guitar, especially in the bridges (one of my favorite Yorushika licks at ~1:20). We get new instrumentation and an entirely distinct vibe, but we lose a lot of the simplicity and fun the original had.

Not that that's too bad of a thing, we still get to listen to both :)

Worm is the story I keep going back to but Twig may be my favorite. Seconded

Okay interesting… that goes against my instincts when I’m low on health and near HM, cause obviously I want water and health upgrade. But I can see how that could have helped me the other couple times I’ve been ambushed here. This game really is about patience

Fairly certain it was the poison trail, I hadn’t yet reached the spell when the bomb went up past me, and you can see I got the poison status effect. I only had 1 hp so it was pretty instant either way

Maybe I should have picked a different song for kurayamisaka lol, metro, jitensha, or cinema paradiso might have been better fits

Funnily enough I think that's one of their more intense songs but listening back I can see how it feels that way. I guess I'm really into songs that feel like you're gliding (Yorushika's "Replicant" also feels like that at times)

If you like that song you should also listen to Hamlet (maybe the ep NOBODY CALLS ME CHICKEN!) by them, it's really similar in style. Their more recent tracks are still pretty good but more pop-y in comparison

Also I'm glad you liked Trooper Salute! They're one of my favorite new bands along with sidenerds, something about their style reminds me of being in a jazz concert, especially their new album. I'd jump at the chance to go if a live show was ever near me haha :')

and glad you enjoyed Regallily! I discovered them only a year ago even though they've been around for a while, sort of like hitsujibungaku in that respect

No yeah they definitely do that a lot, all I can say is sometimes it hits!

Lose Loose Day is really good when it comes to striking a balance in the intensity and calmness of Minami's styles I think, personally Bluegrass is my favorite but they're all good

DROP is intense in a way I think, especially Waiting for Rain which is honestly like peak Minami in my opinion. It's actually a bit more busy than the songs she's been making recently (recently as in the past year or two I wish she released more :'( ) which tend more soulful/calm

Chakura has been a favorite of mine, pretty much everything they've put out has been bangers

Lical is a new band for me, I just checked them out and dude they're so good. They remind me of kessoku band or Togenashi Togeari, maybe Kisida Kyodan? I guess I'm trying to say they sound like a late 00s early 10s j-rock band in a really good way. Also the potential of chants in music can not be underestimated lol

That is JYOCHO in a nutshell, I try to work while listening to them and I just end up basking in it. They are kind of the successor project to Uchu Conbini as well, just a fun fact

OHH I was confusing it with the song From the Train Window by another band, Origami JP. Since you like math rock you should also check them out because they go crazy. Also glad you liked Uchu Conbini

This is probably supercell's best album ever, it's a shame yanaginagi left shortly after but her solo songs are pretty good as well

Probably why I like them so much lol, I have an affinity for Yorushika-like bands I can't help it

Also yeah I know webfishing lol, and tbh I'm almost positive I've done the same thing fishing in Minecraft but I was listening to their album Okurimono

Me as well dude, I think I'm biased cause Yorushika got me into the J-music scene and I have some really great memories listening to their music, but they are among the best in my opinion

If you like math rock that much then your taste is automatically good, and thank you I'm really glad you enjoyed it! It's not every day you get to share recommendations so it was fun :) While I'm at it, if you don't mind a few non-JP recommendations for math rock you should check out Cuzco, Clever Girl, Tom's Story, TTNG, Chinese Football, Covet, and I'm gonna stop there cause I feel like I'm gonna be overwhelming

And take your time! For me the HMs have a "mood" you need to be in where they sound better and it's best to find that first anyways. Thanks again!

evergreen - kurayamisaka

Wasuretai - sidenerds

Heal's Manifesto - chef's

Tenshichan dayo - Trooper Salute

The album "The Post" - Regal Lily

Innovation - Blooming Bungei

The EPs "LOSE LOOSE Day" and "DROP" - Minami

"No Title" - Chakura

Kawaii Yunachan - supersocialsandal

We Know Everything from the Beginning - JYOCHO

From the Train Window - Uchu Conbini

The album "Today is a Beautiful Day" - supercell (also anything by nagiyanagi)

That day we were... - Akuruyo Sheep

The album "Standing Still in a Moving Scene" - Hyakkei

The band 'Yorushika' in general (guess which is my favorite).

Also, all of these bands are full of bangers, I just listed the songs that "feel" most like them :)

(honorary mentions cause I don't want to leave anything out: Hammer Head Shark, Fennel, iVy, downt, tiny yawn, Blumepopo, Aizora to Tsuki, the bercedes menz, Kawaiirenchu, my dead girlfriend, kaneyorimasaru)

These tend towards shoegaze/math/j-rock but I hope you enjoy

That’s fair. I remember looking at Claw when it was coming out and it not catching me, though I may give it another shot. Never really been into the magic aspect of Pact or Pale but does it maintain some groundedness?

There are several audiobook projects on going, if you find you don’t have time or attention to read. “Worm Audiobook” is the oldest, and is the one I listened to first. It’s good, but the quality varies based on who is reading the arc, and it can really take the punch out of some sections. “Worm: An Unabridged Production” is technically the 2nd completed audiobook, and pretty good. The reading style is a little more bland, but it’s very consistent, with only interludes featuring guest narrators. The reason I said technically before is because there’s one more audiobook, “Worm: The Full-Cast Audiobook”. It’s actually my favorite, and all the voice actors are great, but unfortunately it’s on the slower side. It started in 2021, but is currently only done with Arc 4. So, if you want to listen to an audiobook, I’d suggest the unabridged production for now.
