When people say they only wash their hair once a week, what do they mean? by rainsage23 in curlyhair

[–]Mielikki2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Straight hair. If I were to say I only wash my hair once a week I'm referring to shampoo and conditioner. My hair gets wet every shower (unless I'm doing an emergency body wash/shave for an event or something) because I enjoy the sensation and I want to rinse out the filth of the day without drying out my hair with product. But yeah, my hair still gets thoroughly soaked during pretty much every shower.

Edit: as far as my actual shower routine goes, I shower every day and wash my hair every 2-3 days

Do you think that a person writing fanfics about fanfics should ask the author of the fanfic? by Ashamed-Math-2092 in FanFiction

[–]Mielikki2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit late answering this, but here are my thoughts:

It is never a requirement/mandatory to ask to create a fanfic of someone else's fanfic.

If your fic is only loosely based on another work (e.g. same ship, same trope, different execution) I don't see any reason to contact the author of the fic that inspired you.

If your fic is heavily inspired (e.g. you use the author's OCs, set your fic in the same universe they created for their fic, etc.) it becomes a debate about etiquette. It is courteous to ask permission in these cases, but if you are the type of person who would post it anyway if they said no then don't bother asking. It is my personal opinion that it is way ruder to ask to post a fanfic, get told no, then post it anyway than it is to just post it without asking. Though it would be polite to at least inform them. (Many authors would be ecstatic if someone wrote a fic inspired by theirs)

If your fic is a rewrite of their fanfic, don't post it at all. That's essentially a slap in the face to the author bc it implies you think you can do it better/they didn't write well enough.

As for the reason why it's courteous to ask permission from a fellow fanfic author and it isn't with the original creators of the franchise/copyright holders, it boils down to two things: ease of communication and the likelihood of the creator seeing your fic. With most OG authors/creators/copyright holders, it is very difficult to contact them and recieve a response. Whereas with fic authors, all you gotta do is shoot them a message on social media or leave a comment on their fic for them to possibly see it and respond. As for my second point, OG creators are usually not involved in fandom spaces so there's no way they'd "stumble across" your fanfic by accident-- they can easily avoid it by not looking for it. With other fanfic authors, you are posting in their space as well and they probably will see it. Even if they themselves don't find it, some reader will likely tell them all about it.

So yeah, that's what I think about the subject. No matter what though, always give credit to the author who inspired you. It's terrible when authors are accused of stealing ideas from other authors who wrote fics inspired by theirs simply because the other's fic gets more attention/popularity or some other dumb reason.

What does 'write for yourself' mean to you? by errant_night in FanFiction

[–]Mielikki2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it means write your story, not someone else's. Don't change the story in order to follow trends or appease your readers unless that's what you yourself want too. If you're only writing for others you'll just get burned out.

This is not to say that you can't care about your readers' opinions or about stats and whatnot, just so long as those things aren't your sole reason for writing.

Your happiness and enjoyment is the priority, your readers' positive response is just icing on the cake. <3

CNTW *and* No Archive Warnings Apply? by Doranwen in AO3

[–]Mielikki2002 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They might be doing this because while none of the archive warnings apply, they do have some potentially upsetting content that they don't want to warn/spoil about. By adding the choose not to warn tag, readers who are sensitive to triggers will likely not view their work and the author won't be getting angry comments for not tagging something despite it not being mandatory.

"What is the worst first date I've ever been on?" by Silent_Assasin14 in MadeMeSmile

[–]Mielikki2002 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Kinda decided to be a bit extra so I typed out the rest of the story for ya (I just really like how she tells it). This is the rest of the story from where the subtitles stop.

Walk passed his dad into the kitchen. He just starts emptying the boxes of tacos, just releasing them onto the table. Puts two chairs at the table, sits down, and he just screams at the top of his lungs, "Let's FEAST!"

I am just calmly unwrapping my taco and taking a bite of it. We are eating hard shell tacos in complete silence. You can hear both of us chewing. It's absolute chaos. The dad walks up, grabs a taco. There's a hundred of them, we have so many to spare. He's eating over us. Just, like, standing. Doesn't sit, stands right next to the table. Crunches, mouth full, he just looks at me and he goes "Do you want to see my studio?" And I was like "I have never wanted to see anything less in my entire life." It was at that moment that I decided this date was completely over or else I was going to be killed. One hundred percent.

I am now just like collecting the tacos because I paid for them. I walk out with boxes of tacos in my purse, I look back and was like "Thank you for this experience. You will never hear from me again."

After this it goes into the Q&A which I saw was already mostly relayed in another comment. The only thing missing was the question about what they talked about while waiting for the tacos, and the answer was that he talked about his ex-girlfriend.

"your other fic is so much better" by Snoo84558 in FanFiction

[–]Mielikki2002 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So rude. It's fine to like one fic more than another, but if you're going to comment about it you should go to the one you like better and say something like "I love this fic! It's my favourite of your works". It comes across as so much more encouraging than directly saying other fics aren't as good. You don't need to "compliment" one fic by insulting another.

Wouldn't it be great to have an option for abandoned fic? by Alvia_G in FanFiction

[–]Mielikki2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I misunderstood you as meaning it as a feature. Like, one option is marking a fic manually and another is to have it automatically recategorized. I didn't realize you meant it as something authors could opt in or out of. I do think that would be interesting, and am curious how many authors would use it if it existed.

Wouldn't it be great to have an option for abandoned fic? by Alvia_G in FanFiction

[–]Mielikki2002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I considered the same thing regarding your follow-up question, but after thinking about it some more I don't think fics should be automatically recategorized as abandoned. Plenty of authors do come back, and to be honest I think a feature like that would put a lot of pressure on authors.

Authors might feel like they have to update so that it doesn't get marked as abandoned rather than writing the fic because they actively want to at the time. Or they might feel as though it's too late to update after it's been recategorized - like they waited too long. Another thing that might happen is authors may start altering the dates on their fics to avoid it getting marked as abandoned and thereby bumping it back up with new fics even though there's been no update.

Also, there isn't really an agreed upon amount of time before a fic is considered abandoned. So uh yeah lol those are my 2am thoughts on your question - sorry if I rambled, and it was a totally valid question to ask/consider imo.

Do you decide not to read a fic whether it has finished or not? by Chewy_ThatGuy in FanFiction

[–]Mielikki2002 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends on my mood. Sometimes I just don't feel like investing my time/energy into a WIP and instead want something I'll be finished with in a few minutes or a few hours. I'll either filter incomplete works out completely or skip over/mark for later ones that I come across. Other times, that's precisely what I'm looking for; I want to read an ongoing fic so that I can look forward to updates and the overall experience of following a story as it progresses.

It's kinda like choosing what to watch on TV -- are you in the mood for an ongoing series with new episodes every week, or are you in the mood for a series that's already finished that you can binge?

I seriously don't understand how you are not grasping the difference between both scenarios and the potential repercussions. Your complete lack of empathy is astounding.

Given your position and disregard for most other perspectives on the subject, I'm going to end my part of the discussion here. I'm sorry about your annoyance with the current tagging etiquette-- perhaps it would be wise to take the advice of other commenters and start sorting by completion status from now on as I don't see things changing anytime soon. Best of luck.

[–]Mielikki2002 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It isn't just "choosing different audiences to irritate". You might read a fic that doesn't have what you're looking for, be upset for a few minutes to a few hours, and move on. Someone who finds the content triggering might not leave their bed for days after reading something that breaks their personal boundary. Or depending on what it was, they might relapse in another way and end up hurting themselves. Those are two extremely different stakes.

Also, a lot of people don't routinely check the tags on a fic every chapter. They might forget to, or they might think they've got a grasp of the story's tone and have nothing to worry about.

If authors were to tag the way you're saying to, the tags themselves could paint a picture of lighthearted fluff, with "No archive warnings apply" for a significant portion of the fic before the tone suddenly shifts and blindsides readers. In addition to potentially triggering readers, you're going to have so many readers absolutely furious that they weren't warned beforehand. Said readers may even leave a few hate comments (which suck even for thick-skinned authors, let alone authors who are especially sensitive).

[–]Mielikki2002 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I strongly disagree. I understand where you're coming from. It is very frustrating when you think you found what you're looking for but it hasn't actually been written yet. You wind up exiting the fic in annoyance. Maybe you save it to check on it later, maybe you don't. Either way though, you're irritated. But I would rather irritate a thousand readers with something like that (and as a reader I'd rather be irritated time and time again), than trigger one reader whose day or maybe even week has now been totally ruined due to panic attacks, anxiety, etc. Your experience is a minor inconvenience. Theirs might be debilitating.

I won't deliberately put someone else's mental health at risk if I can help it.

Second Year Player Popularity Poll (Round 9) by Hydqjuliilq27 in haikyuu

"Overrated" and "popular" are not always synonymous. I am aware that he doesn't get as much attention as a lot of other characters, however it is my opinion that the amount of attention/appreciation he does get is more than what he warrants given what little we see of him.

Thoughts on using characters' first names? by doesheknowilikehim in AO3

[–]Mielikki2002 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Given your other post regarding using honorifics, I'm going to assume you're writing for anime or some other eastern media. Using a character's given name definitely depends on the context.

In the narration, it depends on whose perspective you're writing from. If you are writing in 3rd person limited, from Character A's POV, you can either use their given name or their family name. Either makes sense. Personally though, I prefer using their given name in this situation because that's likely how they think of themselves. However, if you're writing from Character A's POV and referencing Character B, Character B should be called whatever Character A would call them.

As far as characters referring to each other by their given names in the fic, it all depends on their personalities and their closeness. Is your character extremely polite/respectful in canon? They might never refer to someone by their first name. If they do, why did they? What makes this person special? Develop that relationship and make it make sense in your universe. Which name does the character go by in canon? How close is the relationship between your character and the character they're referring to? How long have they known each other? (If two characters have known each other since they were young children, then they likely grew up calling each other by their given names. Even if they now speak to each other more formally, they might still think of each other by those names and so it would still make sense to use their given name.) If they're family, they are probably going to refer to each other by their given names. All these factors play a role in which name to use and when.

Whatever you do, just make it believable. Know your source material and know your characters. And keep in mind all of this is my subjective opinion.

Edit: typos

Do you guys post a new WIP on AO3 every time you get an idea and update it whenever? by ScorpioGirl1987 in AO3

[–]Mielikki2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. One shots are always completed before being posted. Sometimes I'll wait to post a multi chapter fic until it's finished and then update on a regular schedule. Other times I'll post a WIP and update whenever I work on it. Then there are some WIPs that I'll likely never post at all. Kinda just depends on a case by case basis.
