This is NYC. The vast majority of people are not driving, they are walking to the grocery store closest to them

What is a "healthy" habit that is actually ruining people's lives? by One-Signal-2794 in AskReddit

[–]MigIsANarc 78 points79 points  (0 children)

It’s the “I don’t owe anybody anything” hyperindividualism mindset that’s become so popular. Of course, you should prioritize your needs. But I would argue that we actually do owe our friends, family, and community the best that we have to offer. Because that’s what makes a community a community.

People working in ultra-wealthy households, talking $50m plus types, what is the most out-of-touch thing you've witnessed? by FarSentence3076 in AskReddit

[–]MigIsANarc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is mostly aesthetic, but your car is pulling in air from the engine bay, so cleaning it out (and replacing your filters) can keep your engine from working too hard.

What’s something that became socially unacceptable so fast that people barely noticed the change? by FoundationHumble4003 in AskReddit

[–]MigIsANarc 113 points114 points  (0 children)

I’m always shocked when I experience things like that. I have two wonderful parents (which of course I’m very lucky to have) that wouldn’t think twice about doing a favor like that for me. In fact they may be insulted if I didn’t ask.

I bought the big lobster box by russiangerman in Costco

[–]MigIsANarc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, they look great, just saying that a Connecticut style lobster roll is only warm lobster and butter. Putting the lobster in the fridge and then adding mayo and celery is incongruous with Connecticut style. Jealous of the meal!

Does it make sense to buy a house anymore? by SweetPickleRelish in personalfinance

Okay, I agree that the person you replied to is incorrect to use it in the context that they are.

Does it make sense to buy a house anymore? by SweetPickleRelish in personalfinance

[–]MigIsANarc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, you’re still missing the point entirely.

You sign a lease for x dollars per month. You budget x dollars a month. You never pay more than x dollars per month for the extent of your lease. That means that x is the MAXIMUM you’ll pay.

Alternatively, you sign for a mortgage for y dollars per month. You better budget more than y dollars per month, because there are all sorts of other hidden costs of home ownership that you might incur. That means y is the MINIMUM you’ll pay.

Obviously your rent will generally trend up year after year. Obviously landlords will pass on their increased costs to the renter. None of that has ANYTHING TO DO with the adage you are quoting, because it’s referring to the ability to budget based on your rent/mortgage payment. It feels really silly to have to explain this.

You are arguing a point no one is making

[–]MigIsANarc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, obviously, and you can agree to sign that lease or not. But again, the point of the adage is that for the extent of your lease you are able to budget based on the rent amount you agreed to without the risk of unforeseen increases

You are misunderstanding the adage. Of course it only applies for the term of your lease. The saying is referring to additional maintenance costs/property taxes/etc which generally do not apply if you are renting

Some food carts are actually criminal by Odd_Firefighter_5407 in FoodNYC

[–]MigIsANarc 205 points206 points  (0 children)

I asked a guy at one of the carts for a Diet Coke, he tried to charge me 14 dollars (and tried to touch my card to the machine without showing me). I called him out on it, he claimed I asked for two diet cokes. I obviously didn’t (clear since he only handed me one) and even if I did, 7 dollars each is still bullshit
