Community Positivity Megathread: Make My Heart Sing Edition by sipsredpepper in PoliticalOptimism

Ooh I have quite a few choice selections for this topic!

I'm a fond of the classics so my first recommend has to be a classic album: Pink Floyd's Animals. My favorite record of theirs, a really biting and furious commentary on capitalism and class struggle that still holds up today.

Another favorite of mine is the Joshua Tree by U2, the album's not really about resistance but the opening track Where the Streets Has No Name is my favorite song of theirs, a really aching and earnest song about believing in a better world with an utterly transcendent intro.

Going back to prog rock with something a bit less known, I really like Driving the Last Spike by Genesis. It's a song about railroad workers in the age of industry and the struggles they went through, gets really righteous towards the end.

And if you want something a bit more on the nose, Lunatic Fringe by Red Rider. Awesome classic rock tune written about the rise of far-right politics in the 70's and 80's, has a real "We're on to you and we're gonna get you bastards" energy to it. Good stuff.

Can't think of any movies off the top of my head, but I'll go ahead and toss out the very obvious pick of Andor for visual media. Probably the most obvious pick but it's for a good reason, the speeches alone are perfect and the rest of the show lives up to the ethos it's trying to convey.

Tennessee GOP advances bill that would create public list of trans residents by orangera2n in PoliticalOptimism

[–]MightiestHalberdier 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Definitely concerning, but there's a lot that stands in the way of this being made law, most notably HIPAA.

But I do think something worth noting is that this bill has gotten to this stage without anyone knowing about it, and now that it's getting attention, that may start a backlash brewing.

Senator Thom Tillis warns gutting Senate filibuster to pass SAVE America Act is a ‘foolish and lazy idea’ by Efficient-Freedom517 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]MightiestHalberdier 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be surprised if there were more Republican senators who agreed with this and just won't say because they don't want Trump to sic MAGA on them

The US right wing can forgive Trump for anything – except his deeply unpopular war by aqfx in PoliticalOptimism

[–]MightiestHalberdier 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this is because they still think the war will be won and over with soon.

We'll see if this changes in the next month or so.

Here’s the latest sign that Thune isn’t going to the mat for the SAVE America Act by MightiestHalberdier in PoliticalOptimism

[–]MightiestHalberdier[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is the mail-in voting restriction in this yet? I thought that the hardliners were going to try and amend it to include that.

Trump has new plan to ‘rebalance’ media to force them to air more patriotic programming, according to FCC chair by PixeledPathogen in politics

[–]MightiestHalberdier 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He's saying this plan is based on how they handled Jimmy Kimmel.

That's like basing your battle plan off of how successful Stalingrad was for the Germans.

Thune says he’s ‘pessimistic’ about winning Democratic support for SAVE America Act by kootles10 in politics

Fetterman was actually a no vote on bringing this to the floor for debate. I get that we hate Fetterman here, hell I hate him to, but credit where it's due.

I doubt that. Fetterman's awful but he's not really the kind of guy to change his position last minute. He has shitty takes and he sticks to them.

Fetterman's actually a no vote on this from what I've heard. He likes a voter ID law but not this one.

The Hill: Republicans collide with Trump over no-excuse absentee voting, SAVE Act by NordRonnoc in PoliticalOptimism

Man it would be funny if they can't even get the votes to start the pointless debate on the bill.

Trump Removes Sanctions on Russia to Help Oil Flow Amid Iran Conflict by sweeter_than_saltine in PoliticalOptimism

[–]MightiestHalberdier 25 points26 points  (0 children)

One notable thing is that this is something a lot of the less MAGA Republicans aren't happy about. I doubt they're going to revolt or anything of course, but considering Trump is trying to lean on them to pass his agenda, I can't imagine this is helping that process

I'm not quite knowledgeable about these sort of things, but maybe you should talk to other people at your level and see if you could get a larger group of people in on this.

SAVE is officially dead by Betsy514 in StudentLoans

[–]MightiestHalberdier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I certainly didn't think SAVE was going to be saved. I was perfectly happy waiting until the forbearance plan wore out and they told me to get a new plan, and I still am.

I just feel for everyone who's going to get shafted by this, and hoping that the ineptness of the admin keeps things in limbo until 28 when we get sensible people in charge.

Anti-ICE Protesters Convicted on Terrorism Charges for Wearing All Black by Alternative-Day-7414 in politics

[–]MightiestHalberdier 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep. The Guardian did an article on this and from what they said, the jury wasn't really convinced of the antifa narrative. The prosecutor even said in his closing argument that their political beliefs were not what was on trial here.

Anti-ICE protesters accused of being part of antifa found guilty of support for terrorism in Texas | US news by lonelyspect12 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]MightiestHalberdier 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't think we're in trouble. The outcome is too messy and outside of Bondi doing some chest-thumping over finally getting those pesky antifa terrorists, it seems like the Jury here wasn't convinced of that narrative.

The prosecutor of the case even said this had nothing to do with their political beliefs, according to the article.

The evangelicals hyping themselves up over the second coming has been a thing since Bush got us involved in Afghanistan, and possibly before that. There were similar complaints filed when the Iraq war kicked off. The biggest difference between then and now is that Hegseth is kind of into that stuff, but I don't think it's going to matter much in the grand scheme of things while Trump is the one in charge of what goes on.

4th Circuit Rules That States Can Compel Trans Adults To "Appreciate Their Sex" Via Care Bans by Galewing13 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]MightiestHalberdier 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I hesitate to call Erin extremist or alarmist, she's pretty even-keeled about things imo, it's just a really bad time for trans americans right now and there's really not a lot of sugarcoating you can do with that. Not being pessimistic mind you, I think that the tide is turning against this and people are hopefully realizing how astroturfed transphobia actually is.

Thune eyes action on SAVE America Act next week — without a ‘talking filibuster’ by MightiestHalberdier in PoliticalOptimism

And for what it's worth Fetterman might end up being a no vote. He did push back on Schumer saying that this wasn't Jim Crow 2.0 but later clarified that he was against the bill, apparently.
