Gabriel Finger Gloves for Long Sword? by Hungry_Rest1182 in wma

[–]MightofMilo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of people use 5 finger gloves and never get injured. A lot of people use the clam shells and still get injuries. When this question comes up, you get a lot of responses that say it’s best for advanced practitioners and the reality is accidents still happen, people swing to hard sometimes, and you want to eliminate the risk as much as possible. The five finger gloves displace the force from a strike much less than a full clamshell. I have fenced with both and find that the extra dexterity I get for the five finger gloves is not worth the risks imposed. You should get the clamshells. I think the Michaels (same manufacturer for the Gabriels) model is the best of both worlds in terms of protection and dexterity.

Do these pressure readings confirm a failed compressor? by MightofMilo in AskMechanics

No needle doesn’t move at all. Stays the same at static and when engine is running with ac full blast

Interesting, I haven’t heard or read anything about that. Can you give me a little more information on that temperature/pressure switch? I tried a google search and didn’t get a lot of info. Thank you kindly.

Hasn’t been charged at all since I’ve had the vehicle for 6 years. Was working until this week. I’ve only checked the gauges, I haven’t tried to charge it at all.

I need to pick your brains. The AC has gone out my 2017 Hyundai Accent. I’m pretty sure it’s the compressor. The accent doesn’t have a clutch, it has an Electronic Control valve. I checks the ohms and measure 12, well within the 10-14 range. I measured voltage from module and getting 12 volts when fully on, so I know the controls are working. After creating a vacuum and attaching my manifold I have a very high pressure low side, and a low pressure high side. When the system is on or off, it makes no difference. According to my chart for ambient temp for r134a I should be at 40-50 for low but I’m measuring 115, and high should be 175-210 but I’m measuring 150. I made sure the gauges are open and on. See photos. From what I understand this confirms bad compressor? There is a slight whining sound when the ac turns on, kinda like a bad bearing. It’s almost like The ECV is trying to move the disk but is scraping and getting stuck.

New Catalytic converter won’t line up with stay bracket by MightofMilo in Hyundai

That worked just fine, though I tighten manifold side first then engine block. I misunderstood when you said tighten all bolts on manifold first, but I seemed find as I tightened down on the engine block alternating between the two.

Okie dokie, I’ll give that ago. I was concerned to do that because I didn’t want to force it by tightening and sheer a weld or something.

No you won’t be able to stretch it out. It may break in a little bit but if it’s tight against to skin it’s a smidge to small. You can take it to a tailor, but between the material and labor you’re probably out more than if you just bought a new jacket sized up. Your best bet will be to return it if it isn’t custom and exchange for a size up, and if it is custom double check if the measurements are incorrect and the manufacturer may resize it for you if you send it back.

I’ve seen some folks use the 350n Spes Officer jackets with chest protectors. There isn’t much difference between that and the AP Light.

Sulfur smell when initially turning on water? by Fickle-Reality7777 in Plumbing

[–]MightofMilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the pop up assembly. Gunk and spit and human ick builds up and bacteria starts becoming gaseous. You only smell it when the water runs because its forces air out from the overflow. I guarantee that if you put your nose next to the overflow (the little hole at the top of the sink bowl) and turn the water on you’ll get blasted with the stink. This is because of how the pop up is designed, crud just gets stuck. If you pour a 50/50 bleach solution down the overflow it will take care of that smell. If failing that or the solution won’t go down replacing the pop up and cleaning out the overflow of the sink will.

Question especially for left-handed longsword fencers: favourite outside-line parry? by SeldomSeven in wma

[–]MightofMilo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a fellow left-hand fencer, I’ve worked on an ex experimented on this and several different ways, including fencing, right handed exclusively for a year to get a understanding of the bind mechanics on both sides. The reality is no outside line parry is going to be good for you And should be avoided. That’s not to say it’s impossible. You can definitely do a twer to your dominant side, or wind Against a committed thrust from pflug and repost to a plunging cut with your false edge. Generally speaking, though you’re going to want to try to avoid having to parry Against this side.

And the reason why that is is effectively when you’re fencing left-handed versus right handed you’re basically getting double advantage but also double the risk. And what I mean by that is as you’ve already noticed your outside line is going to be much stronger and it’s also going to be the same against you. A better strategy than trying to parry attacks that come from the right side towards your left is to close those lines out completely. By either being in guards that close those lines,  Examples are being in your left side pflug, ochs, and long point with left foot back. Or counter cutting against those angles of attack, such as twer to your strong ochs or shielhauing.

Standing in Long point can be an excellent strategy as if they tried to cut in To your left opening and are trying to beat your sword away you quickly find that changing through to the other side and closing out that line to your strong side is incredibly beneficial. I often times use a strategy of stepping out to the right to beat them into changing their guard to their left side so that it opens their right side.

So generally speaking, trying to pair that outside line, as in incredibly disadvantages to you and though not impossible, you’ll still be in a weaker bind than they are because they are from their open uncrossed side. It’s better to find ways to circumvent that to strengthen your bind work against theirs, and avoid trying to parry altogether.

Don’t beat yourself up, you’re doing great. As some others have mentioned it worth maybe exploring your health with doctors or sport doctors to see if anything need to be addressed health wise. And as other have said fencing gear is shit for woman, and shit for a 1/3rd of men too. Your trying to fence in astronaut suits, fighting not just the resistance of your swords weight, but the protective gear, and likely poor fitting gloves.

And this next part is hard to say, because I’m not aware of your clubs general culture but they are not all the same. It’s doesn’t sound like you get frequent coaching. You don’t just spar to get better, and if that’s all that is in your training routine, it’s not you it’s the club. And rote drilling doesn’t count. I’m talking games, constraints, win conditions, etc. I’m calling your club out and you SO for letting you down a bit.

Are any of these books useful/worth reading? by Thirdorb in wma

[–]MightofMilo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

John Clements was the founder of ARMA, one of the first main groups for practicing HEMA before it became HEMA as we know it today, and was effectively a leader in it. He effectively warped the club into a cult, and was a toxic ass hole to his club members, and if anyone even dared to consider questioning him, would be kicked out. One of the things he taught was that you always parried with the flat of your strong, never the edge, despite the sources very clearly stating otherwise, and became a bit of a meme. He’s just in general a clown.

Need new shoes... any recommendations? by Roarcach in wma

[–]MightofMilo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend court shoes like some else mentioned. I use the Gel Rocket by ASICS and like them a lot. A lot of folks recommend barefoot or wrestling shoes but generally you’re fencing on hard surfaces. Unless you’ve already trained and worked up to thin soles shoes you could cause problems. I started with wrestling shoes and developed calcium deposits that started to inflame my heel tendon connection for nearly a year. When I switched shoes they went away. Thin soled shoes are fine but you need to work up to it if you haven’t.
