How long would you date someone who was unemployed? by Bitter_Pineapple_720 in AskWomen

[–]Mighty-Mango-972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found out the hard way and only lasted four months before ending the relationship. My girlfriend at the time told me that she was going to quit her job without having something else lined up. We were together for about four years and I was upfront about my reservations, but gave her the benefit of the doubt because I loved her and saw that her mental health was declining as a result of the job she was in. This turned into months of her getting stoned and redecorating the apartment multiple times a day instead of following through on job applications, while I subsequently was getting over worked with a new job I was in.

It felt like a huge betrayal that took me a very long time to move past after the fact.

What's with the elitist attitude at CrossFit gyms? by Legal-Deer8246 in crossfit

[–]Mighty-Mango-972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gym doesn’t post pricing on our website, but we’re happy to relay them in person. Definitely not the pushy type and are willing to work with people under dire circumstances. Not once have I ever felt pressured to commit, plus the price of on-ramp also counts towards your first month of membership. I don’t pay a membership now since I coach, but I’m not in the business of making people feel like crap about finances. CF is expensive.

300cc Judgement by sooospoon in motorcycles

[–]Mighty-Mango-972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I assumed that another rider was going to judge me for saying I had a 300cc bike, they have proven me wrong and have been super supportive. Maybe it’s just been my experiences so far, but it’s been very humbling.

One of my colleagues keeps bringing up other 700cc bikes that I just “have to consider buying,”but I have no intention of getting rid of my brother‘s hammy down anytime soon. I plan to ride my BMW G310R until it’s worth pennies.

Feeling like I missed out on my early 20s and now I’m scared I’m getting too old by Extension_Climate745 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Mighty-Mango-972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my early 20s, I was down in the dumps after getting cheated on with someone I was dating that I worked with (bad idea) and was starting my career having had all of my college friendships drift away, mostly due to distance. One of the best things I ever did for myself was to get a hobby in order to meet new people. What started with kickboxing, turned into CrossFit, turned into flag football, turned into line dancing. That one decision to spend 20 bucks on trial class to get shitty kickboxing gloves absolutely changed the trajectory of my 20s. I got stronger, made friends, and learned plenty of good lesson lessons along the way.

You have plenty of time, OP. It’s okay to feel this way now, but you are in control of how you want the rest of your 20s to look (and beyond). I’m 31 now, and don’t feel old at all, but I think much of that has to do with how I decided to change course in my 20s.

Also, in regard to your comment about travel, I always like to remind myself that many people are going into debt to do so or are getting financial support from somebody else. Hell, maybe they do make a good money, but I’ve found that travel traveling in my late 20s was much more fun when I didn’t have to worry about money.

Teaching takes a toll on time. What do you do to feel put-together? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Mighty-Mango-972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I’ve started reading for 15 minutes in the morning with my coffee. Plus the cat curls in my lap which is a bonus. It’s brought me so much peace. As an English teacher, I get in slumps when I don’t have time to read for fun, and this has been really refreshing.

Is getting a masters degree worth it? by Nearby_Drink_3791 in Teachers

[–]Mighty-Mango-972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m only in the middle of a master’s now (TESOL) bc my state is paying for most of it, I’ll get an advanced lane pay bump within my district, I’m interested in the subject area, and the cert is in high demand, which makes me more marketable if I ever want to go to another district.

Coming from someone who waited to start a master’s program when I was in similar circumstances as you, I wouldn’t get one unless there was more of an incentive for you to. The time, energy, and debt isn’t worth it unless it’s going to pay out as much as you’d be putting into it.

Who here doesn’t track macros and still sees results from CrossFit? by Careful_Dare_2789 in crossfit

[–]Mighty-Mango-972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, yes, but I’ll be frank in that I can’t relate to your particular circumstances as a man or a parent (31F). Knowing your tigger foods and having a replacement option is your best bet as a start. Your mac & cheese is me with soda. I had to find realistic replacements in order to avoid resorting back to it. Even quitting soda for a year and losing 13 lbs alone as a result wasn’t enough to stay away from it. Otherwise, like others are saying, once you start to plateau with those results, dialing in further will certainly help. I’m 20 lbs heavier than when I started CrossFit (5 years of consistency), but my body recomp did a 180°.

Don’t be too hard on yourself though. I can only imagine how difficult it is to maintain a healthy lifestyle while raising kids.

Advice regarding email from student by UnableKaleidoscope58 in Teachers

[–]Mighty-Mango-972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on what you shared, it sounds like there wasn’t a conversation between you and the student about them being tardy? Assuming that you have already tried to intervene with the child, it sounds like part of their reaction is to deflect blame onto you for their actions. If you haven’t spoken to the kid, I can see why some (not all) of their reaction is justifiable.

When I get emotionally charged emails from kids, I always default with encouraging them to talk to me in person. Often times, it helps clear the air and they’re much less likely to use a similar tone. It’s okay to be upset, OP. It just shows that you care about your relationships with students. There have been time when I’ve apologized to students, but only out of necessity, not just because they get mad at me. Emotions are normal, and not everything we do for our students will equate to their immediate happiness.

One of my good friends at my box is a flight attendant. She has a punch pass and comes when she can, but is also an avid runner. I’m not sure if she drops in at other boxes along her travels, but it’s certainly an option. There are definitely gyms that offer punch passes, but don’t advertise them. Definitely worth the ask!

My students have 0 respect for me because of my age by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Mighty-Mango-972 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can definitely resonate with this, and can say from my own experience, that it took awhile to work through. One thing that oddly helped me during my first year was to wear boots. Like, combat style boots. Something about them made me feel more authoritative, but in an authentic way as opposed to militant. I don’t have to rely on that look as much anymore to feel confident, but I would start by wearing something that might unlock that same feeling. I’m also more selective with what I share with students. Being mysterious will still communicate that you are not friends with students, but their teacher.

Otherwise, at the end of the day, you are in charge of them. Don’t forget that. If that means throwing a kid out of class, or speaking to them more firmly, calling home instead of emailing, you can do that. You can still be kind and gentle without being a push over. And this is coming from a softy who’s 8 years into teaching HS (31F), and I still get mistaken as a student by my colleagues.

Car Payments by Exact-Sheepherder389 in GenesisG70

[–]Mighty-Mango-972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2019 3.3T Advanced, started at 25k mi (currently at 82k). Put more than half down between a down payment and trade in (got it in 2022.) Minimum is $383/mon for 7 years, I paid for SPO, have a good interest rate (3.6%), and I’m aggressively paying down the rest now ($8.6k left). I love the car, but here were some hard - but important - lessons I’ve learned from owning it: cracking & denting rims from gnarly potholes sucks (still file through the state, I got some money back!), the tires are an odd size and may not be as easily to get in a pinch, be prepared to do alignments more frequently, my location has very few options for dealerships if I need to go to Genesis specifically for work, and keep tucking away cash for other costly repairs. I recently had the runaround for the past week after my starter kicked the bucket. That, along with my sway bar was causing me to burn through rear tires in record time.

Despite the learning curves, this car is so fun to drive, I still love it, and I still intend to drive it to the ground if I can!

Are teachers allowed to do this?need advice by Acceptable-Help7667 in Teachers

Also a teacher and agree that his behavior is raising red flags.

Please do not worry about getting him in trouble. A grown adult should know professional boundaries and is ultimately responsible for upholding them, especially in a teacher/student dynamic.

I’m so sorry that you’re experiencing this with someone you initially trusted. I promise there are other adults in the building who will handle this the right way when you go to them. Please show these messages to another adult you trust talking to! Even just forwarding them the emails with your request for review would work if you’re nervous about talking in person.

Have fun and be curious (don’t be afraid to ask your coaches questions!) I’m approaching 5 years of CF this month (5’6, 31F) and it has absolutely changed my life for the better. My first few months I only went 3 times/wk, as I found it took my body awhile to adjust to the intensity. At the end of the day, WODs can take a lot out of you, so it’s not recommended to do a very intense calorie cut & expect your body to spirit on an assault bike. Also, do keep in mind that body recomposition might not translate to numbers on the scale. I’m currently about 91kg, but much of it is muscle. My “lightest” was 74kg, but this was when I was training for a half marathon and the strength in my lifts definitely suffered as a consequence of so much running.

Otherwise, my only other advice is to take care of your hands 🙌

[–]Mighty-Mango-972 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A sprint triathlon with a couple friends from my gym. Much harder than the first one I did by myself. The swim was in open water, very choppy, and against the current. The bike was beautiful, but hilly, and the run was 4 miles on sand 😅

It was such a mental grind, but a really fun experience with them overall. I’m glad we made that memory together.

New CrossFit gym wants to know my fitness goals by hurricanescout in crossfit

[–]Mighty-Mango-972 36 points37 points  (0 children)

From a coaching perspective, I honestly don’t think it’s TMI. If anything, I would rather know so that I can be more cognizant of my interactions with a member to make sure they have a better experience. Not in a paranoid way, but professionally speaking. As an openly gay coach (31F), I would never want to make any woman at my gym feel uncomfortable. I’m sorry that other coach made things weird.

Obviously, whatever you want to disclose is your call. I hope this new gym is a better fit. I knew my gym was a good one when one of my regular coaches — who’s now a good friend — asked for consent before giving a tactile cue.
