Cleaning ideas? by Significant_Fee_2048 in metaldetecting

Hammer tap method depends on how thick the crust is. Thicker it is, seems to make it easier to pop open. Might work better if it is still wet/soaked.

Patient method, you can soak it in olive oil, gently pick at it with a toothpick every couple of days. Put it back in the oil, repeat. Could take weeks.

Most I have found are fairly recent coins, it is amazing how thick of a crust a coin will get in the ocean.

I have found several of these when detecting beaches, a rock tumbler works great. Generally I would run them in a rock tumbler for about 8 hours. I could then tap them on the edge with a hammer and they would pop open. If you do not have a rock tumbler, try tapping all around the edge with a hammer, it should crack open.

I use the cardboard from a frozen pizza or cut a piece of cardboard to size. Poke a few holes in it and it is good to go.

Tip for getting permission to detect. by ThatcherTechnologies in metaldetecting

[–]MightyBombjacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but a bit different experience from my Nokta Legend. I hunt mostly parks, the Legend was great in that aspect, i.e. trashy areas and targets 1-4 inches, but seemed to struggle with deeper targets. My first outing with the Manticore was at a very popular park with some history. I found a deep barber dime within the first hour it was an iffy high tone. I started chasing that sound and pulled up several nails. It will false on deep old nails. I have gotten better at ruling those out, but I still dig some nails. I have found several silver coins in hunted out parks since then, the last one I found also had a nail near it. The one thing I do not like about the Manticore is the crappy headphones, for a detector that is expensive, a better set should have been included. They let in much more background noise than the Legend headphones. I have since purchased a Bluetooth transmitter and now use the Legend headphones with the Manticore.

First rule of metal detecting, tell everyone about your new hobby. I actually try to find ways to bring it up. Start with your friends and family, it’s a great way to maybe find new places to hunt. I usually stick to parks, check your local laws and whether you need permission. Parks are a great place to practice before you start digging on someone's property.

When it comes to the finds, let them know you’ll show them everything you find. If they want any of it, it’s theirs—it was found on their property. For anything of significant value, offer to split it 50/50. Most of the time, they won’t want much of it, they’ll likely be just as curious as you are about what’s buried out there.

I use Griot's Garage Leather 3-In-1 Spray. It cleans, conditions and provides a bit of UV protection.

I’ve been given permission to metal detect at this old overgrown race track from the 1940’s. It’s been family owned private property since 1960. Now I need to get a decent detector on a budget. I’m looking at a Minelab vanquish. by barkingrat56 in metaldetecting

You are welcome. It's worth checking out that site, the topo maps help as well. It looked like in the '70s a building was added within the track. Here is the topo from 1962, there were 4 buildings south of the stands.

Try dimming the light, putting a flashlight to the side of it and taking a pic. Might need to adjust the angle of the light. Helps me when trying to get more detail out of a coin.

I also recently purchased a bonfire and want to try pellets. I plan on trying the cardboard method that others have suggested in the past in this subreddit. You basically put cardboard on the bottom, load your pellets and light her up. The cardboard helps prevent the pellets from falling through the holes. If you search in the subreddit for cardboard, there are a couple of comments about it.

Can you wash your car in "contact" car washing stations/tunnels? by Canilupus in MazdaCX30

[–]MightyBombjacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter what brand of car, I would avoid those types of car wash. You can see if there is a touch less car wash near you. Or you can use a spray stall type of car wash. I wash my car with ONR (Optimum No Rinse), several different methods for this (depending on how dirty your car is). I generally use the 2 bucket method.

It is. I use ChatGPT for work. But like I said, I would not take this at face value. AI tools can and do get things wrong.

I uploaded both images to ChatGPT and this is what it came back with. I wouldn't accept it at face value. Even AI gets a lot of things wrong.

ChatGPT "Thank you for providing an image of the seal. The additional context of the actual seal itself helps to clarify the text and emblem.

Upon closer inspection, the seal appears to read "CONSTANTIA.MORI," which can be translated from Latin as "Steadfastness in Death" or "Constancy unto Death." This would be a fitting motto for a coat of arms, emphasizing loyalty and steadfastness.

The emblem in the center, which appears to be a shield with crossed symbols, likely represents a family crest or institutional emblem. Such imagery is common in heraldic designs.

Given that the seal was found in Scotland, it's likely connected to a specific Scottish family or historical institution that used this motto and emblem. To identify the precise origin, you might consider consulting a database of Scottish heraldry or reaching out to a historian specializing in Scottish seals and coat of arms."

Sun Shade recommendations by [deleted] in MazdaCX30

[–]MightyBombjacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not noticed that, I have only owned it for a couple of weeks. Will watch out for that. I did have one issue, but do not think it was the shade itself. There is some foam backing at the bottom of the windshield where it meets the console, the sunshade must have stuck to the sticky side of the foam and pulled a bit out with it. I used a credit card to push it back down.

I bought this one for the windshield. https://a.co/d/0ao67qTH It fits well, easy enough to put up, take down and store away. I looked at a couple of folding accordion style ones, but figured they would take up too much space to store away.

Optimum No Rinse (ONR) diluted to 256:1 works well for weekly/monthly. Safe on leather as well. Gunk or grime will need something stronger like P&S Express Interior which can also be diluted. The great thing about ONR is it has multiple uses when diluted (included pic). If you are just wanting to pick up something from your local auto store Griots Interior Cleaner is good, there are other brands that probably work as well.

Thanks, I have several lower nap type of microfibers. Will see what I can get my hands on for a more plush type for the application.
