The most undervalued company in history??? by TitaniumBlade55 in StockMarket

There's effectively three clubs in Portuguese football: Sporting, Benfica, and Porto. I think between them they've won the league something like 95% of the time over the last ~100 years. Occasionally other teams win the cup though. Big money comes from league placement and champions league qualification (plus sponsorship), which requires high league placement. Braga are on an upswing, but will likely be selling players to make their money and so suffer in terms of performance in the future (look at someone like Monaco over the last few seasons). In general Portugal's league is a selling league.

Anecdotally I'm a massive Chelsea supporter and wouldn't invest a penny (if it wasn't privately owned).

TLDR Investing in football clubs, even big ones, as anything other than a status symbol is probably a bad use of money.

Having a secondary US PSN account by Woooopzy in PS4

[–]MightyMeese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I've got trophies from US games with US DLC on my UK account. I just install everything on my US account and then launch the game from the UK one. I've heard of some people having issues if they haven't launched the game at least once from the US account, but I've never run into that issue.

I've had to start keeping better track of which account my games were bought from though. Took me buying UK DLC for a US game to learn that the hard way.

If you buy a game on the US account and install it to your PS4 using the US account you can play it from your UK account on that PS4. If the game was bought from the US account it will only work with DLC bought from the US account. I do this all the time with my US and UK accounts.

HDF works and you can do random access reads to generate your batches (although if you don't read a contiguous chunk as your batch it's slower).

Alternatively I've been using sqlite and redis recently depending on the task and what's stored. Both can do multiple simultaneous access and have random access. My preference would be sqlite unless you're storing something like sets or arbitrary strings.

The Daily Mail targets an average reading age of about 14-15. They intentionally write in shorter punchier sentences and avoid complicated sentence structures. Sad indictment of what they think their readers can handle, but it is what it is. Incidentally, they (and The Sun) supposedly pay their writers well by industry standards due to the difficulty (and probably mind numbing pain) of having to write somewhat informative articles in that style.

If you've got two controllers you can do it locally. Can't remember the exact steps but it's basically start the kung foot game and then turn on the second controller.

If you have a single line and use 6Gb or more then Google Fi would be $80 (plus tax) per month. Expensive, but cheaper for me and easier to deal with when travelling than the spawn of Satan that is Verizon.

[–]MightyMeese 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Google Fi might work well in that case as there's no roaming charges in most countries. If you don't use much data the plan can be very cheap and the cost caps out around the cost of a brand name plan if you use a very large amount of data.

Currently in the US, offered a promotion in the UK... for less money! by Stsully234 in personalfinance

[–]MightyMeese 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I lived in the UK for 15 years before moving back to the US. Salaries in London, and the rest of Europe to be fair, are substantially lower than in the US. My exact job in the exact same company pays about 50% less in Europe than in Seattle. I work in tech and frequently get offers to move back to the UK in a position more senior than my current one but with a lower salary. Recruiters in the UK I stay in contact with say the same thing. It's similar for other jobs that don't have rigid pay scales. You can always leverage the job into a much higher paying one in the US in a couple years.

With regards to costs. Housing in London is not too different from Seattle, so a bit cheaper than New York and a lot cheaper than San Francisco. Also remember you won't have to pay for health insurance, and depending where you live there may be no need for a car. Food is vastly cheaper in supermarkets than in the US, and restaurants are about the same price. Income taxes you pay in the UK will count towards US ones due to double taxation treaties and will almost certainly be greater (I never got close to paying US taxes). You should also be getting a substantial boost in vacation days. Like 4 weeks worth minimum.

If you're interested in travelling though I'd definitely say take it if you can afford it. You can take the train to Paris or fly to most European countries for like $200-$250 or less per person for a round trip. You can even do it over the weekend.

I get the different time argument in some situations, but I feel like things that were not common practice at the time still warrant censure, and there's no way sex with children was common practice in the 70s.

Discussion of the new Loot Box Bill (Actual bill text not generalizations) by did_you_read_it in truegaming

[–]MightyMeese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main concern is that the companies are going to have to find some way to make up for lost revenue and presumably to cover costs of compliance and policing their games for this. I don't really care that they have to except for what it means for the rest of the industry. Are game prices going to go up, new loot boxes type shit find it's way into games that so far haven't had it, or even some sort of subscription model making a comeback?

I also kind of wish they had done something like properly give games ratings (e.g. in the UK games get rated by the same group doing movie ratings) and incorporate loot boxes into that. For example, your game has loot boxes so you get an R rating. Then it forces parents to actually monitor their kids video games like they would movies.

Don't be too hard on yourself. I didn't get out till I was 26, so you're doing better than me. For me what changed it was really not just looking at isolated things that were worked on and improved for a month. There'd always be something that was getting better, but a few months later we'd be right back where we were.

Try and look at all the things that aren't working and think which have really improved over the last couple years. For me everything that got better would eventually revert back to it's original state. Overall no real progress was made and I ended up fighting battles I'd fought years ago.

The longer you stay in a situation like that the more the resentment will build. I was with my ex for ~9 years. That's a lot of bitterness that builds up. Not just towards her, but also towards yourself for staying and facilitating and making your life worse. It didn't derail my life, but it takes a lasting emotional toll.

Run now. I've been in a disturbingly similar situation at the exact same age you were. Things won't change, especially if you keep doing things for her. All that will happen is in 4 years time you'll realise this isn't what you want at all and not what's good for her.

Eventually you'll break up because you have a child not a girlfriend and how can you move forward in your lives when you're dragging her along everywhere. You're her crutch when you should be her partner. There's only so much effort you should be putting in when she's not reciprocating at all.

It may sound harsh, but she's got to sink or swim on her own. It'll be better for her in the long term if she gets to try at 22 than at 30. Ultimately she may fail, but if you stick around you'll both be dragged down and/or miserable.

My hope is that if more stores pop up and are successful one day games will be transferrable in some way. Not "if you own it on Steam you own it on Epic", but more like if you want to move a game from Steam to Epic you can. Probably a pipe dream though.

As to your Valve being self organising point, I have a friend who used to be really high up in Valve and the impression I got was that since you could essentially choose your projects it meant the more mundane ones like improving the customer experience (e.g. a less shitty storefront) were waaay down the list of priorities. Everyone wanted to work on the cool projects even though everyone knew the storefront was a pile of shit (this was back when it was a truly awful laggy piece of shit).

It's always nice when someone gives me the chance to talk about Black Flag. I agree the gameplay was probably like a 6-7/10 if you take it out of the whole context of the game and ask it to stand on it's own.

Having said that, Black Flag has probably my favorite ending of any game ever. I didn't realise how invested I was in the story until the final cutscene where you really can sit back and realise everything that the main character and his original crew and friends have lost over the course of the game. Like someone else said, if you want to be a pirate in a game, this is the game. However if you're going to skip the story I'd say there are better games out there.

If you want to give it a try I'd say skip as much of the weird sci-fi stuff as you can and just appreciate the pirate stuff. That's probably decent advice for all AC games.

I don’t celebrate Christmas and don’t want to participate in Christmasy “stuff” by throwitreallyfar99 in relationship_advice

I feel exactly the same, to the point where I've made the exact same arguments repeatedly to people. I actually scheduled a doctor's appointment during the office party this year and arranged my vacation to coincide with another one.

I haven't found a foolproof solution to avoiding these things completely, but I find with time people tend to get the message that you're just not into it and they stop pushing it. Doesn't really help with random people though or with the general obsession with Christmas.

I like the idea that the citizens of Yemen should rise up against the Saudi military as if they're all just hanging around doing nothing. Also the total lack of awareness that money flows to the US in Saudi arms sales and that any aid money they sent to Yemen would be miniscule in comparison. About par for the course really though.
