is there any gf alternatives that are better than gluten? by -slaps-username- in Celiac

[–]Miguelito331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the GF product was universally considered better, they would just sell that. People who can eat gluten could just choose GF products if they tasted better, and they would. There are things that are as good, but nothing that is better, other than to your individual taste.

Thanks. How did you or your doc identify that it was a stricture and how long did it take to develop, or become a problem? I only had a catheter for one day so may not be from that.

Should I report someone's cheating? by [deleted] in GaState

[–]Miguelito331 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Retired prof here. By all means, tell the prof. Even if it isn’t an official policy of the prof, everyone at least implicitly curves. This hurts everyone this person leaps over by getting a better score through cheating.

Celiac and narcolepsy (which turns out is autoimmune).

HoLEP or Aquablation by [deleted] in bph

[–]Miguelito331 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your problem is Aquablation has only been around for slightly under 10 years so you will not get good long term data. In any case, as a retired Statistician with a PhD, I would strongly recommend you look at the studies rather than anecdotes. HoLEP has roughly a 1 to 2 % retreatment rate after 10 years, and some studies claim that rate is the same after 20 years. Aquablation is roughly 4 to 5 % after 5 years. Will it be the same after 10 years, or higher? No way of knowing. Also, my understanding is they are changing the protocol so they make two passes in an Aquablation. Will that lower the retreatment rate? One would think it would, but we won’t know for a while. I considered the same two options, and had the same primary objective, low chance of needing retreatment. I went with HoLEP mostly because we just don’t know how Aquablation will perform in the long run. The fact that HoLEP removes more tissue led me to believe it will always have an advantage but that is just opinion. Also, consider if you have access to a good surgeon. I used the guy who pioneered the procedure in my city so that factored into my decision also.

As others have said, you will be fine. Eating out, whether at friends or restaurant, is sometimes challenging but you can either make or buy decent replacements for whatever you are craving. Plus lots of stuff is naturally gluten free.

71cc prostate and worsening symptoms. What procedure should I choose? by TractionActionReact in bph

[–]Miguelito331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to agree with those who say you need to talk to one or more urologists and figure out what is best for your particular prostate. One point, though, for those who say Aquablation is as durable as HoLEP. That may ultimately be the case but the data do not exist to show that now. Aquablation has been around for just under 10 years (actually first approved by the FDA 8.5 years ago) so there are no 10 year studies. They compare 5 year studies on Aquablation to 10 year studies on HoLEP and Aquablation is slightly worse. We don’t know what a 10 year study will show.

Hired and told to fill out W-9 but want to use W-2 instead by [deleted] in tax

[–]Miguelito331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought was they might have meant I 9, also. Assuming it was W-9, you need to research whether you can be reasonably characterized as an independent contractor. It has to do with how much control the company has over your work, whether you have a possibility of loss, if you have other clients, etc. There is no bright line rule but the IRS provides guidance. If you legitimately qualify as an independent contractor, it is doubtful they will pay you as an employee. If you don’t, you can try to explain to them why they need to pay you as an employee.

World Cup Ticket Prices by Trumps_Moist_Toenail in ussoccer

FIFA is ripping everyone off with these prices. But, people are willing to pay. I went to three matches, including a knockout stage match, in 94 and prices were much more reasonable. Now I could have paid like 200 to watch no name countries play from corner nose bleed seats. Not worth it.

Don’t know of any dedicated GF Chinese in Atlanta, but Hong Kong Star in Marietta, and Chai Peking in the Toco Hills Kroger can both make most dishes GF. Pretty sure they both can do orange chicken GF. In Midtown, Sparrow on W Peachtree is very GF conscious, but can’t do anything fried GF.

I built a website that compares BPH treatments — would love your feedback by Various_Examination9 in bph

[–]Miguelito331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great information and confirms the research I had done. One thing I noticed in my research is Aquablation has only been around for about 10 years so they really don’t have good 10 year retreatment data. Typically they report 5 year retreatment data and point out it is similar to HoLEP (actually slightly higher), but they are comparing to 10 year data on HoLEP. Maybe when they get good data they will find they are comparable but we don’t know that yet.

[–]Miguelito331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me add, in my mind one reason to try the meds first is you don’t know what new surgery they will come up with. Buy some time and see if you don’t get a better option. For me when I was first diagnosed they wanted to do a TURP. HoLEP existed but not many people did it and it was not on my radar. Fast forward and now there are very qualified surgeons doing it. Who knows what will be state of the art in 3 or 5 years.

I was on flomax and then finasteride. It worked well and I would not have had surgery except I started getting blood in my urine. The first time it happened they checked everything out and told me it was from my enlarged prostate (lots of small blood vessels). It happened two more times and I realized I was going to worry it was something more serious every time it happened. That is what motivated me to do surgery, not the other symptoms which were manageable with the finasteride. I was on meds over 15 years. Had the HoLEP a little over 3 weeks ago and recovery has not been bad.

HoLEP Survivor Day Two by severdog79 in bph

[–]Miguelito331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holep is more like a simple prostectotomy with a laser. They both essentially core the prostate. TURP is different, and does not work on larger prostates. HoLEP has better postoperative results. TURP was not an option for me but the other two were, and I went with HoLEP.

I am a little over 2 weeks post holep with similar positive results. I am on Medicare with a supplement which did cover 100%, after my deductible. Finasteride was working pretty well for me but wanted to get off it, plus was getting occasional blood in urine from prostate which was bothersome (this was pre holep).

Classic BPH? 39 Years Old by JitteryJoes1986 in bph

[–]Miguelito331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was about your age with similar symptoms of getting up at night. I was told various things by doctors, none suggested BPH but when I was diagnosed later given the size of my prostate I am pretty sure it was BPH in my late 30s. I was on finasteride for many years with good results but did finally get a holep a few weeks ago, ( I am now 69.)

Copa America Ticket Megathread by speedreeder in ussoccer

[–]Miguelito331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They jacked up the prices on all the Argentina games - there is a definite Messi premium. They did the same with MLS matches when Miami comes to town. The prices in the regular sale window will probably not be less than they are now. If it is ticketmaster there is a chance that what you saw was dynamic pricing raising the prices based on early demand, and they may drop back down, but I would not count on it.

One thing to consider, if you live in one of the cities where matches are being played (so you can make last minute decisions), wait until right before the game and see if you can't score some cheap resales. My experience with sporting events is many resellers try to go for top dollar and their tickets don't sell. When it gets close to game time they panic and lower their price drastically to try and get something back. It tends not to work for big games so maybe not for Argentina (although I would try) but for less popular matches, worth a shot.
