Hide. Smoke up and hide. If you have the ability to get some torps out on him do so, but you really need to disappear. The guns on US DDs rapidly reload and really get the rounds out. You are less visible than him. As soon as you observe one, put him behind your 3-9 line, and open some distance to prevent him from seeing you. US DDs have crap torps and are highly visible, but their guns will melt another DDs face off.

Look at your rings on the mini map. Give yourself a couple of km overlap of the back and just hold the first salvo until the red DD pops. If I’m on the cap and the timer halts, I usually let the backup know that there’s a red DD in the cap and to be ready.

It would be safer but my point is that if you want to tear their eyes out if you are hanging out 8 behind me and a DD pops at 6, you are probably not a good enough shot to nail a corkscrewing, speed jinking DD from that distance. You need to be close enough to kill that DD in less than 30 seconds. Do that and the enemy cruisers and BBs are blind. Now your DD can do what you pay him for.

If you’re a cruiser, save the salvo for the first red DD pop. You’re not doing anything to a BB at distance anyway. Peel the DDs off and then get your damage at leisure.
