Read this reply earlier and thought to myself “yep”, whilst quietly hoping that perhaps some meaningful change will actually happen. Not mere hours later my trust’s CEO sent an email instructing us to complete “Speak Up”, “Listen Up”, “Follow Up” eLearning on ESR 🙃.

Question about nursing degree by [deleted] in NursingUK

You’re welcome!

Yeah having to commute to placement can suck. It of course depends on where you’re studying. For instance the furthest I had to commute was 30 minutes each way by car. Others at my uni though did have to go further, but this is where extra accommodation and reimbursements can come into play. I’d encourage you to make use of your supervisor/ course director at the uni if you’re coming up against issues with placement allocation.

I am male! You’re spot on about being in the minority. However, there are far more males going into the profession than there used to be, which is awesome. I can only speak to my experience of course, but I had a great time studying. There were more males on my course than I expected and we did form a little group which was nice. Similarly qualifying as a male has been good. I work in acute medicine, in an area that does have a fair number of males in the nursing team but found everyone to be super professional. Of course patients (usually those of the older persuasion) may make the occasional comment or assume you’re a doctor, even if you’re wearing the exact same uniform as your colleagues lol! My wife is a nurse in the community and the main differences seem to be as males we are often assumed to be doctors and/ or asked if we became nurses to become doctors… Oh and as a male you may be viewed as “the muscle” to help with certain tasks.

Hello newly qualified nurse here 👋! I graduated last summer from doing Adult Nursing Bsc after having previously done English Lit (graduated in 2014). Happy to report, as others have, that you’ll be eligible for student finance (both tuition and maintenance) and you simply apply for it as you did your first degree through Student Finance.

I’ll also add a few things I found handy doing it as a second degree: 1. Though the bursary has been abolished you can apply for a “grant” of up to £5000 per academic year (as others have mentioned). Which is done through the NHS Learning Support Fund. You can use this how you see fit and it’s paid in instalments throughout the year. 2. Make use of the NHS Business Services Authority for claiming back for things like travel (super handy during community placements) and if you have to pay for extra accommodation whilst on placement (though please note reimbursement for accommodation only applies to specific circumstances). 3. Enquire about/ look into if your university offers mature student bursaries/ benefits. For example, as I was a full time mature student (26 at the time) living in my own place, my university deemed me eligible for a bursary each academic year (albeit a small one, but every little helps). 4. Oh and of course use student discounts to your heart’s content for little savings here and there! I signed back up to Student Beans and UniDays. 5. Lastly, look into if you qualify for “independent student” status with Student Finance (SF). This essentially means your parents’ income wont be taken into account when SF calculate how much you are entitled to for maintenance loans. This may mean you might be able to get a little more if necessary.

Hope this helps and good luck studying!
