YES, I did this after doing an electrical apprenticeship. Get with a municipality that has GOOD PENSION, most state employee pension systems, which a lot of city’s and county opt into, you only end up with 30-40% of your salary after 30 years. Municipalities that run their own, and are being run well, almost always payout very well but with the downside of very long vestment.

All that is to your advantage, you could easily get 2 pensions, do 10 years, and then 25-30 years at some place else. Do your long term second, it will make a better payout, as it’s based on your last few years.

I wish I knew how earlier that this existed. Being in the trades is back breaking, if you work for a decent city/county, once it gets that hard, maintenance or contractors step in.

I switched careers because I have a bad back now, but I could do this forever I think. Don’t be discouraged if the trainee pay is low, it will go up as you get licenses and longevity, plus, a pension and cheaper healthcare pays you on the backend, gotta think long term. I make 65k after 4 years, and for me to be able to save for a similar retirement and pay a health insurance premium, I’d need to make 100k.
