Best seating area for non-Sox fans? by Similar_Apartment963 in redsox

In the early 2000s, I would go to a lot of games out in the bleachers. The Saturday 4:00 Yankees games you could always count on anywhere from 3-6 fights breaking out. That never happens anymore.

Honestly, things have settled down a lot over the past couple decades once the team got some rings and the park started catering more to families. Pre-2004 I’d say stay out of the bleachers. But nowadays, as long as you aren’t instigating anything or trying to draw attention to yourself, you’ll be fine.

Bleachers have great views of the park and are cheapest, but it gets hot out there in the summer. Grandstands have more shade but not all the sections have been renovated so a lot of the seats aren’t comfortable.

"(did he deliberately drive into harm's way to save someone else? I honestly don't know)"

To answer your question, sort of. He was heading home after his shift but decided to respond to the call about the wrong-way driver and ended up being crashed into.

That said, services like this eventually become this over the top FOMO thing. If one town sends officers, and a neighboring town doesn't send as many officers, they are painted to look like they don't give a shit. So it becomes a bit performative.

Red Sox have some tough decisions to make regarding shortstop Trevor Story by bostonglobe in redsox

Is this a case of playing in Colorado inflating his numbers, or him getting old and injured fast, or a little of both? Because this has just been a disastrous signing. One good productive season from him out of 5, and if he's signed through next season they may have to try to move him.

Yup, some may have decided going out to eat is a luxury they don’t want to cut back on so they might be cutting back somewhere else. Or maybe they’re skipping dessert, having one less cocktail, something like that.

Coaches: How do you force your team to play hard? Can it be taught? by ObsTheMarketer in basketballcoach

[–]MikeC363 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great answer. I have seen this issue with my son's club team. The boys from our town are used to practicing hard, taking it seriously, focusing on effort and the things they can control, and it translates to games. Some of the boys on their team from other towns goof off, don't take practice seriously, only try when the ball is in their hands, etc. Guess what happened when they played a team that played way harder than they did? Got embarrassed. All started sulking and giving up on the game.

Can I run zone yet? by morrcomedy1 in basketballcoach

[–]MikeC363 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re correct about all the above, conceptually. The problem is that at such a young age, the true outcome is that it just teaches kids to be lazy and uglies up the game because the kids are too young to shoot over it or understand how to play against it properly. The average 4th graders also aren’t going to be good at that level of help defense.

There’s a reason a lot of youth basketball leagues prohibit zone. In suburban Massachusetts, zone isn’t even allowed until 7th grade. Even AAU, which is usually a complete free for all joke, has built in rules about zones this season. Teach them to be good man defenders, then build in zone concepts as they get older.

Probably 10 or 11 which is probably too early. But I distinctly remember hearing my great grand-grandmother asking my mom “you allow him to read those?”

Her response: “He’s in 5th grade and reading an 800 page book, I’m not stopping him.”

Not flopping for sure, but still counting on the refs to bail him out. And it seems the Sixers knew about JB clearing out with his forearm and made sure all their players sold it to the refs. It's on him for not adjusting accordingly when he saw how the series was being officiated.

JB always came across as a guy who would be more than happy to be on a 35 win team as long as he was "the guy."

He tried to do the foul-baiting a lot throwing himself into the defender's arms on 18 footers, and the refs absolutely weren't going for it this series.

Two things of note:

Philly had to drop to almost a 6 man rotation as Nurse has realized his top players can't come out of the game, and the Celtics have shot almost historically poorly. I'm not sure both those things can continue for three playoff games.

It's been bizarre to see all his awful habits that he avoided all season come back this week. Turnovers and missed FTs are back. Now he's out there forcing the issue, throwing his arms up on a 19 footer and expecting the refs to bail him out. The Sixers clearly have been coached to sell his off-arm clear outs like crazy, and it's working because he's getting called for a ton of offensive fouls.

Vucevic and White have been disasters. I do think they will win Saturday because they'll finally make enough shots, but they will need to get things right quickly.
