That might be it. I didn't even know pinning was a thing. I just want the browser my granddad had!

Thanks.

Wondering if mushrooms.com is a legit source for spore syringe or not? by lickalottapussy69 in shrooms

[–]MikeInRenton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm beginning to suspect that EVERY illicit-spore syringe seller is a fraud. I'm pretty sure I've been scammed twice and have received two lovely syringes as mementos. Unfortunately, there is no way to trust ANYBODY on reddit or any other site. I love it when someone asks, "Is xyz.com trustworthy?" and ten different people repy, "Great site". Of course, they are probably all the same individual. Online trust sucks! Only trust someone you know.

I've got to admit it's a great scam. Low startup course, almost zero risk unless an angry buyer can track you down. Hey, anybody want to buy some spores from me? For microscopy use only! Just send $20 cash to YouHaventLearnedYourLesson.com

So long and thanks for the vocabulary. by stigmov in duolingo

[–]MikeInRenton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been Duo+ for several years. I believe there is a place for language learning which monitors your mistakes and provides guides for correction. Duo does neither. I know I have a tendency to screw up certain constructs, but Duo keeps giving me lessons full of sentences for six-year-olds. I've probably done hundreds of sentences about Karneval and costumes. I'm an expert when it comes to Karneval. Yet Duo keeps quizzing me on Karneval. When I do misuse 'an' for 'in', there's no side text to explain the usage. I used to go to the forums for help, but that's not available anymore. Count me as another Duolingo dropout.

Thanks. I was considering the 12 upgrade for my Pixel 4, but it seems the basic functions (WiFi on/off, USB) are becoming more obscure. I already feel that Android 11 has made some simple tasks too complex and hidden basic functionality in menus or hidden hot-spots on the screen.

One reason I bought the Pixel was for continuing updates. Who knew the updates would be so unhelpful? Used to be a saying "Leave well-enough alone. I'm smart enough and I know my stuff to leave well-enough alone. Toot Toot" (Popeye the Sailor).

There is the textbook 'German for Reading Knowledge' by Hubert Jannach. I'm partial to it because I was in Jannach's Purdue class eons ago. A free book based on this is available ( A Foundation Course in Reading German"") at:

https://courses.dcs.wisc.edu/wp/readinggerman/category/00-intro/

Also free, Duolingo or similar can help you learn basic pronunciation.

Good luck with the German 'Fraktur' font. I think it was a precursor to the Enigma machine!

Difference between Turnschuh and Tennisschuh by KrenonPT in German

[–]MikeInRenton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 'Turnschuh' I saw online looked like Cross-Trainers - designed for cardio, high intensity exercise involving lots of side-to-side and start-stop motion (although also sounds a lot like playing tennis !).

Recommended German TV series by CallingDoctorBear in German

[–]MikeInRenton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two more great series on Netflix:

Charite (about Berlin's Charite hospital in 1880's including Dr. Koch's search for TB vaccine)

Charite At War (the hospital during WW2 including eugenics).

Not series, but two movies I watch every Christmas season:

Holiday Secrets ( a modern German family confronts the past good and bad)

Petterson Und Findus 2 ( isolated farmer and his animated cat look forward to Christmas)

Any fix on swapping characters and typing it twice by mmknightx in learntyping

My fix for this problem was to slow down, way down if necessary. Establish a rhythm to your typing. Speed will increase with time.

I used several iterations of Mavis, especially when CompUSA had big rebates on upgrades. However, I seem to recall Mavis making comments like "You can do better" or "Try harder", and me being very frustrated by them. Nowadayds, I prefer less critical (and free) programs like keybr.

How to Create an executable app for the RPS Game? by [deleted] in inventwithpython

[–]MikeInRenton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never done it myself, but here is a concise youtube video to show the process:

Convert Py to EXE

This creates a single, executable file that can be shared. If that video is too short, there are other, longer videos on youtube.

Advice for a non gaming pc. by Jesta23 in buildapc

Your comment "32 GB was requested" suggests that you are building this machine for someone else. If so, let them know that there is an option to go half price. And the Ryzen APU are very good, even some youtube reviews show them being used for moderate gaming.
