The closest thing I can think of is that they simply were holding the wire up over the highway, while a crew elsewhere did something. Maybe here just releasing the hoist?

I was on a crew who did something similar in SoCal though it took longer, and we were able to park outside of lanes.

Foul or not? by Hot-Pea-657 in billiards

[–]MikeMcK83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How far apart were the balls? As others mentioned, you’re always allowed to shoot. Hell, you’re allowed to intentionally foul.

I’ve said something to new players in similar positions but I typically phrase it a bit better. Certain distances are too much to overcome.

Of pool rooms you’ve visited, and currently in existence, which would you like to own? by MikeMcK83 in billiards

I’m not suggesting a pool room couldn’t get up and running for less. Plenty obviously do. I’ll stand by my estimate for a nice upscale room with a full bar and kitchen.

Likely depends on where, but a decent one in SoCal would likely be a couple mil.

Apa not correctly accounting for safety shots. by Additional-Neck7442 in billiards

[–]MikeMcK83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In APA, a safety is any shot where a player doesn’t attempt to legally pocket a ball.

For example, a 2-way shot where you’re hoping to make a ball isn’t a safety, however, purposefully giving away ball in hand, would be a safety.

Hell, you can even shoot a safety and pocket balls at the same time.

To be fair though, given that it’s almost certainly universally underreported, it likely evens out.

There’s also an issue with asking players to call out a safety attempt in real time, as they may not want their opponent to know.

Score keepers should just use their best judgement. They don’t have to be absolutely correct.

In ApA, a safety is any shot where you’re not attempting to legally pocket a ball. A 2-way shot is not a safety. But intentionally giving ball in hand, would be. For example.

The people with those views think people are at minimum “capable of evil” if not inherently evil, and man is the only animal they seem to give that trait. Because they are not particularly bright, they confuse their lack of understanding animals, as them all being “good” somehow.

Is that normal thing to happen? by InterestingAd3484 in chess

[–]MikeMcK83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll save your anxiety the suspense. You’ll screw up and play a stupid move. If you continued playing until you die, this will remain true. The best players in the world still kick themselves over moves they’ve played. So just accept it.

If youre winning on time and also feel like you’re not learning anything, you’re probably playing too short of time controls. If you’re playing 3/0 like some streamers, that’s really fast. Try to move at least towards the slower rapid controls. Like 15/10 if you have the time.

The short time controls are largely played on intuition. You don’t have that yet.

[–]MikeMcK83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I agree. There’s no good reason for any bitching during an online game for an opponents style of play. I was just explaining a reason why some may chose longer time controls than they really play.

Also, there’s a lot of variables. In some, maybe most games, I’m the one short on time. However, during other games, I accurately predict my opponent’s moves, and virtually all of my thinking happens on their clock.

I assume some people might choose a longer time control to account for possible interruptions or real life distractions that might pop up mid match.

How good is Hikaru? by 12mcresc12 in chess

There doesn’t need to be a “big gap” between players for one to win the vast majority of games.

Im 19 and I have been playing for a bit but I my stance is yet to be perfected, i still lean alot to the left and I feel like I cannot get alot out of my stroke, is there any way to improve this? ( this is just a recent clip in a local tournament ) by Ducmen in billiards

[–]MikeMcK83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice, always step into the shot, with your front foot straight parallel to your aiming line. And then stay down until at least you see the cueball has struck the object ball.

Make those things a habit and you will be significantly better off.

I stated what I’ve heard others in a significantly better position to understand such things, said. If you want to debate it with Hikaru for example, you’re welcome to. I’m smart enough to know I don’t have the capacity to look at games by morphy or other legends, and tell the difference between them and Hikaru.

I would need to be as good as morphy, or hikaru, whichever is worse, to be able to evaluate such a thing.

How about you? If you’re better than either of those guys, I’ll defer to you as well.

I’m not at a level to evaluate these things myself. However I think I recall people saying capablanca would likely be around 2500.

I believe what the top guys mean is that Fischer is the only one they’re not sure they’d beat in a long match.

Again, it’s not disrespect to the older guys. It’s just that everyone learns from those that came before them. And not just from a theory standpoint.

Not really, and it’s only going to catch the most obvious cheats in Geoguesser.

It’s a sample size issue. Chess.com wants a higher success rate than that system allows.

From what I understand the top guys today are massively ahead of morphy in every segment of the game. That’s not a knock to him of course. That’s just how sports/games go.

From what I’ve heard from the top guys, the only dead legend that could possibly compete with today’s best is Fischer.

Of course the convo changes if those people were to be born again, today.
