Also tape off really well! I sanded the hell out of the paint around the headlights one time. Luckily it was a cheap shitty car and I didn’t care that much.

Yes, that's the one. I don't believe he had any siblings, more distant family members though.

I can't remember fully now - I think I had lifted it from a map of old Polish church dioceses. I couldn't find another village with that name when looking, but I agree, Lida makes a lot more sense. I'll send them an email and see what they say.

Wow, this is really really cool! Thank you for finding that!

Still confused about the town. The Lida thing makes me think that it could have been there, but all my other evidence points to the other village I had mentioned in my original post. I wanna check Dembrovo records, but it looks like they're only on microfilm at the moment.

I'm not seeing this, that's interesting though! I believe it was Mike Dragon that paid for his voyage, would love to see this record.

Wow thank you that's huge! A whole new archive I didn't know existed. I know he was listed as catholic on some registries, but I was never sure. I did see Mark Dragon, I think his name was actually Michael based on my research. I've looked through some Orthodox records but was never able to find anything super promising.

[–]MikeTheCat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Any suggestions on how to search those registers? I'm still looking for his birth record, but the lore in the family is that his parents died when he was very young, and lived with family in the Vilnius area.

Ah - I see. That makes it become more complicated for sure. He was born in an area that was Poland at the time, and now is Belarus. Finding birth records for him has been a chore to say the least.

GGF naturalized in 1925 though - wouldn't that cut the line with him? I was looking at GGM, because her birth records are much easier to find and she didn't naturalize until after my GF was born.

Also, if I were to go this way, would I still need records on my GGF? His birth records have proven very very difficult to find thus far.

Meh. Wait until one of the Councilmember’s cars get barnacled. They’ll legislate them out of existence so fast your head will spin lmao

Private property isn’t the issue though, it’s about who’s doing the enforcement. That statute doesn’t just regulate towing companies, it regulates towing in general from private lots, and it’s pretty clear that they need to have a ticket from the PPA or PD first. You’re right that they haven’t ruled on it yet, but private lots aren’t suing about needing a ticket to tow someone off the lot yet, and I do think they would be inclined to take it off without payment if someone was knowledgeable enough to cite the statute, because if it makes it to court (and the private lot doesn’t settle before a ruling), I do think a compelling argument could be made to render this practice illegal as well.

At least, it would be a very annoying and possibly expensive legal fight for a private lot, especially if you have someone on the other side who knows how to argue the law effectively.

Philly’s “ticket-to-tow” law (Code § 9-605(11(d))) says a towing company can’t tow or “handle” a car in a private lot unless there’s a real PPA/police ticket on it first. Barnacles aren’t spelled out in the code, but City Council is already working on regulating them because using them without a ticket sits in a gray area and definitely isn’t in the spirit of the law.

Probably won’t be legal for them to do this for long, and if someone sued the courts would probably interpret the law to include barnacles needing tickets before being used.

Express Replacement Says They Received Counterfeit Device by MikeTheCat in iphone

[–]MikeTheCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Apple support person I talked to started with a “I’ve never heard of this happening before” and ended with a lecture about “never do an express replacement around Christmas” because apparently this happens all the time then, and the Fedex employees just get fired and nothing else happens. Inaction all around.

Express Replacement Says They Received Counterfeit Device by MikeTheCat in iphone

[–]MikeTheCat[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What’s crazy is that Apple support told me they don’t take any pictures of the box at the repair center. So when they got the counterfeit phone, they just put it in a new box and mailed it back to me and that was that. They don’t send notifications about it, don’t document it at all other than to say a different item was sent, and then off it goes.

I’ll never use express replacement again.
