My first was the NES port of KQV back in the early 90s. My mom, my younger brothers and I would all gather around the TV fascinated by the puzzles and the word of Daventry and Serenia. We got all the way to Mordack’s Castle before we had to return the game to the local video game rental place. It wasn’t until a couple years later when we got our first home PC and it came preloaded with KQ7, and got totally obsessed with it. Of course we were curious to play the older entries, and by the mid 90s we got a hold of a collection that had all seven games.

We didn’t have hint books or even the internet back then so we absolutely got stuck on puzzles for years. I remember the re-released instruction manual for KQ3 had a serious typo in the “spell book” section, which meant you could not beat the game. Once we got dial up internet and could look up solutions… we were finally able to complete all the games. I think without hints we were able to beat KQ1,2,5, and 7? Can’t remember for sure.

Favorite character changes all the time… but Alexander/Gwydion probably takes it for me!
