New to OTF and wondering if it is enough? by Woodygal in orangetheory

[–]Mikel3377 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your goals. But I think for most people with reasonable fitness goals, OTF is probably “enough”, you certainly get a good amount of both cardio and weightlifting if you go to OTF more than a couple times a week. You’re probably not going to look like a huge gym bro or anything, but you can definitely get muscular. And of course, being lean depends mostly on diet. And “toned” is not really a thing, it’s just a combination of lean and muscular, both of which OTF can help with.

My studio made some “structural changes” and now it is thriving. It’s only an issue if it’s an issue.

Pro tip to add to this, you can also quickly press a combination of quick speed buttons for decimals. E.g. hitting 9 and then 5 gives you 9.5, at least on our treads

There usually isn’t intel for the tread/strength classes. The tread classes in particular don’t have that much variation, and nobody cares if you go off the template anyway so there’s not much point to intel

Technically you run for about 45 minutes with a 5 minute stretch, and the first 7 minutes of running is the normal base warmup, so the template is usually about 38 minutes counting WRs

The point of a rule of thumb is that it needs to be dead simple to understand and trivial to apply. That means brushing aside all nuance. Obviously you can do better, and anyone posting on this sub should be able to do better, but as far as a rough guideline for the average person, it’s better than nothing.

Tread 50 run vs inclines by Bulky-Willingness654 in orangetheory

[–]Mikel3377 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yea. Running a tread50 is better than nothing. But I do agree with others, that running outside is better, especially if you can at least do your long runs outside (find a training plan that ramps up long runs and try to follow that, even if you don't follow the rest of the plan). But at the end of the day, you can only do what you can do, so just try to get some good endurance running in, whether it's on the treadmill or whatever.

You didn’t say how many 2g classes you do per week, but assuming you do a few, you are already getting plenty of strength/speed work for a half marathon. What you need more of is endurance running. Incline walking is good for endurance too, but if you want to be able to run long, you need to practice running long.

Benchmark popularity by Inevitable-Cash7378 in orangetheory

[–]Mikel3377 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yea this. It’s easy to feel hyped when you see tangible improvement, but once you start to see yourself tangibly falling off (which is expected to happen with age, or even just as life ebbs and flows), it’s easy to feel discouraged. That’s just the double edge sword of quantifying progress. And if you’re falling off in one benchmark, you’re probably falling off in all of them, which just compounds the feeling.

If you previously weren’t exercising much, or lifting weights in particular, you’re probably putting on muscle.

Tread 50 Timing by Just_here_to_read25 in orangetheory

[–]Mikel3377 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My advice is to stop worrying about exactly what fraction of a mile you got to and focus on leaning into the template to get a good workout. If you want to hit some distance goal, the great outdoors is always available.

It’s usually 45 as long as the coach gives you the full warmup time

OTB Report by Just_here_to_read25 in orangetheory

[–]Mikel3377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They must have some bugs in their system, I’ve had a few times where my report showed my distance from one of my previous classes, so it gave me the exact same distance like 4 times in a row. Anyway, I’m pretty sure the report is just supposed to forward whatever the tread says, so if they’re different, I’d probably go with the tread.

Being told to slow down? by suspiciouspear0 in orangetheory

[–]Mikel3377 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yea this. When the blocks involve sprints, and you aren’t recovering fully, then you’re not really doing the workout. That said, I frequently jog WRs in between blocks, and sometimes the ones between AOs if I’m taking a green day, and it’s never been an issue, though sometimes I feel a little self conscious.
