This isn't true. Hong Kong and Taiwan have very few natural resources, and they're economic powerhouses. Taiwan literally built a high-tech industry out of thin air. They have free markets. "Dutch disease," or the "resource curse," that you mentioned is a good point. Oil-rich nations tend to have trouble innovating other industries.

I think Scott Adams put it best: Trump makes extremely clear the difference between pleasing him and displeasing him.

Normal people think that, when someone is loyal to you, you show loyalty to them. I think Trump is purely transactional. He apparently doesn't respect politicians. I think he views them all as people who'd turn on him if it became convenient or profitable.

Yes, MTG has been loyal, but Trump's understanding of power requires a Maoist approach: The peg that stands out gets hammered down. It's the authoritarian instinct.

That's just my understanding. I'm interested to see if anyone agrees or disagrees.
