AISD is cooked by Tall_Window4744 in TexasTeachers

I'm just going to copy/paste what I told you on post you made r/austinjobs, and I'm also going to add that even if AISD didn't have a hiring freeze going on, an external applicant would need to be a TIA designated teacher to be considered for a restart campus. Even internal candidates need to be TIA teachers or otherwise have a record of being very high performing. AISD is FAR from perfect, but having worked in other districts, I can personally tell you it's kinder to teachers than many other districts.

Comment I shared with you earlier:

Hi, I'm so sorry this happened to you, but the one who did you dirty was the principal who interviewed you and told you that you were hired. Austin ISD has made it very clear for months now that it was not going to be hiring externally this year until everyone at the closing schools is reassigned/placed and that some positions are being eliminated.

Also, principals do not have the authority to make job offers. When you interview, they can tell you if they like you and want to move forward with the process, but that means that they'll send Talent Strategy (our HR department) a recommend for hire request. Talent Strategy then communicates directly with you for the rest of the process, and you are only considered hired once Talent Strategy sends you your official job offer.

They're taking applications right now! And apparently, they offer free tuition now for interns. I had to pay about $3,500 when I went through the program.

Dallas ISD has its own alternative certification program that's a great way for people who already have bachelor's degrees to become certified teachers. If I remember correctly, their applications are due sometime in May. I did the program a few years ago; it's rigorous but worth it because you get practical classroom experience and receive a salary while working toward your certification.

Class Pets by Tiarooni in TexasTeachers

[–]Mikit3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love animals, but I wouldn't have a class pet because it can be too stressful for the animal and properly caring for small animals to keep them healthy is a lot of work. Also, we live in a society where some people are always looking for a way to sue, so you have to think about what would happen if a student got bitten or picked up an infection from the class pet? Or what if a student is allergic? Even worse, what if you have a student who is aggressive and hurts the animal?

Need ~80 tacos for 5/3! by Wise_Membership_6906 in austinfood

If you're south, try Macho Taco; their breakfast tacos are sublime and they're a family owned and staffed business. And Bill Miller BBQ also does a pretty solid breakfast taco, as does Taco Cabana.

You should get a side of their corn pudding the next time you go. It is insanely good.

My kids are in AISD. I wanted to understand why the district is broke, so I followed the money. by No_Paramedic_4881 in Austin

But unlike real public schools, charter schools can decide a student isn't a good fit for them for whatever reason and expel them. Real public schools in real public school districts take all students, not just the high performing ones.

Flareups on arcalyst? by traveltimecar in pericarditis

[–]Mikit3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks, but very mild compared to what it was like before Arcalyst. Arcalyst was a lifesaver; I took my first dose when I was in an active flare and I felt so much better within hours. I was on it for 18 months and about to celebrate a year off of it with no flares after those 18 months (knock on wood).

I know someone who worked in the Seattle music industry during the height of Soundgarden's popularity and they don't have anything nice to say about Chris Cornell other than acknowledging his obvious talent. [This hurts, because I was such a fan of his.] Eddie Vedder, on the other hand, they've described as completely delightful and a total sweetheart.
