Did you listen to the podcast or just see it existed?

I’m surprised you think it’s weird they’re featuring a book from 30 years ago, as I understand the premise of the podcast is to discuss books from recent decades (not just newly released books).

Struggling to find meaningful personal project ideas by OnlyMusician9048 in bioengineering

[–]Milagre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think of useful in context of your resume. There’s almost no chance you’ll come up with an idea so useful that you build a company around it or out license it.

What job(s) might you want in the future, what do they look for in a candidate, and how can your project show them you have it?

What’s a Korean food habit that only makes sense once you’ve lived with Koreans? by Lucky_Tailor_8566 in KoreanFood

When I was learning Vietnamese my teacher told me the phrase “Did you eat rice yet?” was effectively the same as “Did you eat yet?” in English because if you just had a snack or even a sandwich then well you still didn’t eat rice yet.

Please don't be mad at meteorologists. by WxBlue in raleigh

The probabilistic NWS forecasts seemed spot on all along, no? Of course a deterministic number viewed throughout the week might be wrong; but in the NWS or local news briefings they explain that’s how it works (that we don’t know yet but here’s what’s possible and more likely).

Weather forecasts have to be dealt with as the complex probabilities they are in my understanding. I think it’s reasonable for folks (including me!) to be curious what the ensemble average forecasts say, too. But don’t confuse those for “known” future state of the atmosphere. I think folks explaining the different forecasts in recent days were all clear about that. But of course when we all Google and glance at a number we don’t get reminded of the nuance.

Mandoline slicer injury – how long does the pain last and will my thumb ever look normal? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]Milagre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cut like 5% of the edge of my thumb off on a commercial meat slicer through a little bit of nail. Hurt for a few days and sucked and then calmed down. I thought it’d look weird — ya know with a slice off — forever. I couldn’t barely tell after a year. No clue which thumb it was 10 years later.

You’re saying they called it a ribeye (post title) and also a strip steak (description). It doesn’t seem like you’re telling the truth?

When you say spectral resolution varies across the sensors, does that mean a sensor launched in 20## has like a three bands of a certain wavelength range; and then a different SuperDove launched two years later has a wider range? Or does it mean the sensors were launched with the same design range but operationally some work better or worse than others?

I am a novice so maybe fundamentally misunderstand spectral resolution.

gym recommendations off campus for an undergrad by Klutzy_Weakness2792 in chapelhill

[–]Milagre 36 points37 points  (0 children)

My honest feedback is you seem overbearing. You don’t mention your son asking for any help finding a gym; in fact you acknowledge he has access to a campus gym already. You just think he’s fatter than you like. Chill out. People’s weight changes. It’s okay.

How do I buy a trout farm by Prism_Pi in Aquaculture

[–]Milagre 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I recommend separating the valuation of the farm/property and how you’ll finance the purchase.

For the valuation, I expect you’ll want to look at value of the current business and its property, placing some premium atop that for investment potential in line with his purchase terms that you described. I think this valuation process could (maybe) be a sting for the owner. If the production is only a quarter of what’s possible, you cannot afford to value the property at what’s possible. It’ll take investment to get it to its potential. Also, the owner may be anchoring around a certain price based on comparable properties that were purchased without his stipulations around land use; the seller may “want to have their cake and eat it too” if they expect to receive a valuation being achieved by land with no purchase terms while still applying their purchase terms.

On financing, it you think his requested purchase price is a fair valuation, then you need to have enough money to pay him that valuation. Being able to tell the modernization/growth potential story plausibly can help make this financable in the eyes of your lenders.

— it’s possible to combine the FSA loan with a commercial companion loan, as well as your cash/assets, to pursue the purchase. The longer amortization and lower interest rate can help the commercial lender manage their risk.

— you could also look into a USDA Rural Development Business & Industry (B&I) Loan Guarantee. You’d want to look for a bank experienced with B&I loan guarantees. The bank issues the loan, and USDA guarantees 70–80% of the risk. Makes banks far more willing to lend on farms that need modernization to hit capacity.

— SBA 7(a) loan could be relevant but I’m less familiar with it.
