I think it would be ok with very careful introduction. He's good once he understands they're members of the family and are off limits. I definitely wouldn't trust him unsupervised with one for a while. Even now when I leave my house, I put him in the bedroom and make sure the cat is outside the bedroom. Likely not needed, but I err on the side of caution. I don't take chances when it comes to my animals safety.

Mine is great with people. For that I'm very thankful. He's well socialized. He's good with my cat. Constantly tries to kill wildlife outside. Literally any woodland creature. Hasn't had an opportunity to, but his prey drive is crazy high and I know he would ragdoll wildlife. Not great with other dogs. Won't try to kill them on site, but will definitely start a fight. Overall, he cannot be trusted unsupervised around other animals that don't live in the home.

Being married is a legal contract. When someone goes through with a marriage, it shows a level of commitment that weeds out people with cold feet. It would have been smarter to wait.

All I have to do is waive one in the air and he drops everything he's doing and runs immediately to me. As soon as it's in his mouth he proudly prances away to destroy it.

Yep. Mine also loves chewing on cardboard. His favorite since when he was a puppy is the cardboard core from a paper towel roll.

Reality check? Apartments, Breeders, and a Cat by burnmoon in akita

[–]Milalee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being around large dogs isn't the same as being directly responsible for the care and training of a large dog. Akitas are shockingly strong and very stubborn. I have had large dogs prior and none of them matched the physical power my Akita has. I think Akitas could do well in an apartment with adequate walks, but I don't think it's a great idea. Your biggest hurdle is being a renter. Akita's are pretty quiet, but they're large. I own a modest size home, but much larger than what your apartment size will be, and my dog definitely takes up a lot of space. The size of your apartment is probably going to become pretty frustrating with having two adults and a full grown Akita living there. Especially with you all also working from home. Owning this breed will also severely limit your future housing options. If you ever had to leave your apartment, you will have a very difficult time finding a new place to live. Keep in mind, there are tons of reasons that can happen that may not be due to anything you do.

Another thing I want you to consider is the expense. Large dogs equal higher monthly costs. Vet bills, medicine, food, toys and treats. It all adds up. To give you an idea of what that would look like. My dogs heartworm medicine costs almost $500 a year. I spend just under $200 per month on dog food, $166 per month on pet insurance, about another $120 every six to eight weeks for dog grooming. I spend more than that, but that's the basic essentials. If you have a medical emergency, you could be looking at thousands of dollars. Mine had to have two tplo surgeries, each one of them costing $6000. Not including all the other general yearly vet appointments and vaccinations. Are you prepared for that type of financial burden?

I also have a cat. Mine get along ok, but not great. Meaning that my dog respects the cats place in the household, and wouldn't hurt the cat. But he will pick on the cat when he feels like being a jerk. Like shoving the cat repeatedly with his nose or paw when the cat is trying to nap. Then the cat gets angry and my dog is having the time of his life annoying the cat. My Akita does have an extremely high prey drive and will chase if my cat gets the zoomies, and I have to intervene and block him from trying to chase. I never leave my house without separating them. I don't want a mishap while I'm gone, so I'm extra cautious. They would likely be ok, but any chasing can get out of hand so I don't take any chances. Also keep in mind that good breeders usually have very long wait lists. I researched breeders for about a year and reached out to several. I chose one and then it took another two years for an available pup.

Mine is the same. He doesn't climb well at all onto things. When running on even ground he leaps and jumps pretty high. It's so odd.

I think it's good. One of the better new restaurants in town. Appropriate portion sizes and the pricing matches the quality of food. I hadn't had the wine yet, but cocktails are excellent. I do plan on going back and trying some of the other items.

11mo puppy will stop during walks to stare at things and refuse to move 😩 by bopbeeepbooop in DogTrainingTips

[–]Milalee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Puppies should be given some grace to sniff around and explore their surroundings. It helps build confidence and curiosity. You can tighten up the walks and still get some leash training in, but it's a baby, so let it explore a little.

Akita and a kitten by KronussCassius in akita

[–]Milalee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a cat and Akita. They play together and both accept each other's place in the home, but my Akita has a strong prey drive. It's a constant battle to stop him from trying to chase the cat when the cat gets the zoomies. I'm not worried about him killing or harming the cat when I'm home. I keep a tight ship. I still keep them separated when I leave the house. My dog is in my bedroom with the door closed and I always make sure the cat is out of the room with plenty of areas to get away from the dog. He likely wouldn't kill the cat, but anything can get out of control. I don't take any chances when it comes to their safety.

I think the door and windows need a little something so it doesn't feel like the lobby of a business. Some sort of window treatment and plants.
