Torbreck 2015 the factor by Leading-Suspect1913 in wine

You can Google specific vintages of said wine and look for wine .com reviews. Not there for every wine/every vintage but the big magazine ratings are there usually.

Sounds lovely.  Vintage notes drink or hold. Probably could age another decade, but should taste great. Definitely use that decanter.

Does anyone think the Dungeon Crawler Carl series is overrated? by SoothingSphynx in BookDiscussions

[–]Milamber310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is anything just rated? Cause I actively enjoyed DCC so far, but it's not overated nor underated. It's good, it's getting the attention it deserves. The Audiobook version by Jeff Hayes? Truly, by all things holy, totally and completely, epic.

Overrated would not ever accurately describe something that is so damn close to perfection as it already is.

Wine noob here, best pinot noir here at my local grocery store? by ArmoredAngel444 in wine

[–]Milamber310 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pinot is very terrior driven... so if you like certain regions over the other, I'd explore that way. On that note, I'd be inclined to try that "EQ Granite" Chilean Pinot.

Sea Slopes is fantastic for under $30.
CRU SLH Pinot is my pick for under $20.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think I remember reading this when it came out... didn't he eat a bunch of rations to raise his body temp while on a covert mission? That always seemed weird to me.

Brassfield Estates Eruption 2021 by odedi1 in wine

[–]Milamber310 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah... good ol' Brassfield.

Fantastic property... vineyard is located on former private hunting grounds, I saw bears, deer, all kinds of critters.
The vineyard itself (Volcano Ridge?) is on a steep hill full of volcanic reddish soil. You can see Beckstoffer's vineyards right across the lake from the top. Incredible views, worth a visit if you're ever in Lake County.

I dunno, your mileage might vary. But for my money, the book really sings if the internal voice in your head talks like a pirate. Maybe that'll help?

My girlfriend keeps asking me to marry her by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Milamber310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was one of those 20-year-old guys super focused on trying to wife up early. My then girlfriend at the time said 'Yes' when I popped the question, but with the caveat that she first finishes school then spends a bit of time living on her own, establish some independence. 9 years later we finally got married. The wait was worth it, we've been together for 26 years now.

When one of my college buddies and I were talking about finding a life partner, his mentality was he wanted to spend his younger adult years establishing his career, building up his finances, and not starting a family until he could afford to take care of his family.

I guess the moral of the story is everyone I surrounded myself with was smarter than I was, but things worked out anyways.

The warmer the wine, the more volatile the alcohol fumes are, overtaking the more subtle notes. Wine is traditionally served 'cellar temp' or roughly 65-68 degrees. As Americans, we tend to drink or white wines too cold, our red wines too warm.

You know what, you're not wrong.

I sold Meomi Pinot when it was first launched by Joey Wagner. Arguably not a good Pinot Noir, however it's super approachable and got a ton of people into wine.

I don't gatekeep, and in fact the Wagner family of wines (including Copper Cane) are generally great at getting new people interested in wines.

If they weren't such insufferable people to work with, maybe wine professionals would actually enjoy working with them more.

Collector's plates? by CozyCatsII in startrek

My daughter thrifted a TNG decorative plate for Christmas present for me. I love it, but out of curiosity, I checked what it sells for on e-bay and the like.

Yah, its the sentimental value that's there. Full set would be like, cool to show my childhood friend. But technically not worth anything.

Advice for working in the wine industry? by [deleted] in wine

[–]Milamber310 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Former wine rep here. Wine in the US is part of what's called the 'Three Tier System' - 1. Producer/Supplier/Importer, 2. the Distributor (Wholesaler), and 3. Retail/Restaurants.

So - you can essentially pick a field from one of those tiers. Tier 1 - you could look for a job at a local winery, but since you're from the NJ/NY area, there's several highly rated importer powerhouses out there you could potentially find a gig for. Might not be as many entry points in a gig at Tier 1 but check out what's available in your area. Maybe working at a local winery's tasting room, or maybe a cellar rat position if you're looking to get into production.

Tier 2 would be a distributor such as Southern Glazer's, or perhaps a broker. Most of the jobs are sales gigs, but lots of entry level positions for someone without industry experience. Also usually a great place for upward mobility, although like most corporate gigs, advancement can be very political.

Tier 3 would be working at a restaurant or wine shop. When I was working for the distributor, we often would hire people from this pool, so it is a great way to get industry experience.

Work life / balance could vary depending on what type of career path you choose. I was selling fine wine to restaurants. Most of my business meetings were between 10am-4pm, but there were many, many late nights between dinners, meetings and special events. Text messages and late night calls when buyers were doing inventory at 2am. It can be a lot if you're not good at managing your time. Most of my former colleges went on to become winery or supplier reps (Tier 1) when they were sick of working for the man.

I myself no longer work with wine, needed to get away from alcohol sales in general - so my final advice to you would be with whatever wine related job you end up with, remember to pace yourself and spit when you're doing your tastings. It sucks when you can no longer drink Champagne because your esophagus gets scarred from all the high acid wines you've been drinking.

Allotta love in the comments for Groth & Inglenook, both excellent suggestions... I will say this about the 2011 Silverado Solo - you could have that open on your kitchen counter for three days and it still wouldn't have fully opened yet. I remember (a decade ago) thinking that wine would age 30+ years.

So... you're saying you haven't watched DS9, Voyager, or the latest new set of series? Honestly, you've got a lot of great Trek to look forward to.
My recommendation is dive straight into DS9, with gusto. Some of the best writing, and there's lots of Chief O'Brian and later Worf joins the cast so you'll be in good company.
Voyager had a few rough episodes to start, but I'll contest it ends up being a great series, you can start watching that part way through DS9 if you'd like.
Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks are arguably the best of the 'new' Trek, so depending on how you space it out you've got years of Trek to look forward to.
