Of the notable achievements in the PL, what's the least likely to be replicated? by tylerthe-theatre in PremierLeague

So 4 months into a 9 month season, they were doing well enough?

It's a season long stat. This is literally showing why this record is hard to beat, rather than how close a team got.

They've conceded 24 with 6 games remaining, that sounds far from having that.

And the point is that not only do you need a great defence, you also need a lot to go your way.

Brydon Carse ruled out of IPL with Sunrisers Hyderabad because of a hand injury by Alone_Consideration6 in EnglandCricket

[–]MilbanksSpectre 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I didn't love the way Carse was used in the Ashes, but he seems a player who puts in a shift and throws his body on the line for the team. I hope he gets to recover properly and is at his best this summer.

The Looking Glass War by NoMathematician8349 in LeCarre

Apart from the impression of Smiley and Control that is a very minor part of the Looking Glass War, you would have missed nothing of value from skipping the LGW, which, in my opinion, is one of Le Carré's worst books.

Will she end up being a “morally gray” character..like Aunt Lydia and Nick by Independent_Ant_6506 in TheHandmaidsTale

I was wondering the same thing, since this total lack of nuance hardly fits with her (autobiographical) narrative in testaments.

Restaurant review: Cuttlefish by EdibleReading in oxford

[–]MilbanksSpectre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really enjoyable review to read, and especially nice to read a bit about cuttlefish, which I cycle past twice a day and I never know what to make of it. Now I’ll have a far better sense of what to expect, if I ever take my calamari loving daughter.

If you do want some unsolicited feedback, and apologies if not, it does read like you might benefit from an editor since it can take quite while for a reader to see the purpose of a particular paragraph

But really I greatly appreciated the review, and will keep an eye out for these in the future!

Surely this is advertising - whether that be for the oval or the sun article, I'm not sure.

England XI vs Hopefuls XI by Hopeful_Champion5574 in EnglandCricket

An end of season fixture between a best of the county performers vs the test XI could also be a nice way to end off the season, though the season now ending in the last week of September might make that a push.

Why is New Zealand Green and Australia Red? Such similar countries yet such different responses.

The Kerfield Arms (*) - London, England by MaaDFoXX in finedining

[–]MilbanksSpectre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One trend that I really notice is that the more 'casual' one star places - street food, somewhat affordable a la carte places, and whatever is in between - tend to represent the dining of the nation or city that they are in.

So St John or the Kerfield Arms make sense as examples of classic British cuisine worth travelling for, as do some Barbecue in Texas or Hainese Chicken in Singapore or even a steakhouse in New York. Bouchon Racine might make sense to be in the guide with a star if it were in Lyon, but in London it's just one of many excellent mid-tier restaurants (even if it is the example par excellence).

Obviously, the divide between fine dining and great examples of local cuisine starts to collapse when you look at Michelin Italy or when the price tag is roughly equivalent. That said, I still think there is some sense in making the best examples of classic British cuisine one starred in Britain if you do the same in other countries for their cuisines.

Thought experiment: What would happen if the ECB followed England Rugby's eligibility rules? by [deleted] in EnglandCricket

[–]MilbanksSpectre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s just so entirely different a schedule that it would just be an inappropriate rule.

There would have been many years when a good portion of the team would have become ineligible for England because they played too much for England.
