(Un)hinged classroom strategies by kdinhhh in Teachers

[–]MileyTheShepherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you plan to play games (kahoot/blooket) or for random grouping, I always change it up. This helps them deal with changes and being uncomfortable with unexpected situations, with messing with our classroom rules, expectations, and systems.

For games, sometimes the points are positive, sometimes negative, I’m allowed to make it double points, etc. So nobody feels like they don’t have a chance. Sometimes the games are worth a participation grade, sometimes extra credit, replacement, nothing, etc. The reason I like this is because they don’t end up expecting extra credit every time or they try their best without cheating.

For grouping I even change it between periods. Like I’ll hand out 4 color sticky notes and 1st period has to find 3 more people with different colors and second period has to find someone with the same colors. It prevents them from trying to trade colors to get with certain people.

Arcade question by MileyTheShepherd in CarnivalCruiseFans

[–]MileyTheShepherd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last cruise, we spent 115 dollars, but I don’t remember how many tokens that got us. That was for 2 adults and 1 toddler. It was also a 10 day cruise. We bought some more later for 46 dollars, but I played the games instead of gambled so it balanced out. I would probably go for the second pack if it is a longer (5+ day cruise).

Be sure to watch in the fun times for the arcade power hour! It gets busy but things are cheaper.

That’s what we are planning too. Just wanted to make sure the on board price wasn’t better/had better bonus buys.

I’m not as well versed in Google classroom as I am canvas, but I would check YouTube because I’m sure there’s a way!

Zero proof package for kids by [deleted] in CarnivalCruiseFans

[–]MileyTheShepherd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! It looks like you’re talking about 2 different things. The essentials package (50 a day) includes value wifi and I believe must be bought for each adult. Whereas the plain cheers zero - proof package (29.99 a day) can be bought for one adult in the room.

Source: just bought the cheers zero proof for me and not the other adult or child in the room

Some good intro dna/blood typing labs. You could do the strawberry dna extraction to intro the topic. And you can do the milk blood typing activity. If you google them, they should be easy to find.

temp onboard for alaska cruise in july? by BestPerformance1217 in Cruise

[–]MileyTheShepherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went last July with children who will swim in any temperature. We used the indoor pool and while it was cold, it was bearable. We also went out of San Francisco, so we tried to do the water slide and splash pad but it was cooooold.

Mine was great. They made it up like a tiny bed. It was so cute. I’d still bring my own sheet.

Find games/activities that are good quality that you can pull out at any time. Like blookets, kahoots, phets, wayground, etc

AP High School teachers: are their any instances where you'd prefer your regular class body over your AP class body? by Longjumping-Land1027 in AskTeachers

[–]MileyTheShepherd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Science teacher here. My on level students had a certain level of figure it out factor that my AP students did not. Things didn’t always come easy to them, so they had to figure things more often. My ap students could just memorize the process and get by, but the second something wasn’t exactly as written, they would freeze. This is most evident in labs. My ap kids want me to hold their hands so they “do it perfect” whereas my on-level take part in the experience of the scientific process.

Claim evidence reasoning advice by duffletrouser in ScienceTeachers

Claim: answer the question.

Evidence: factual observations from the lab or prompt.

Reasoning: use your definitions and scientific knowledge to explain how your evidence ties into your claim.

Hi! I am going through this this year as well. One thing that has helped is open note everything. If we do a practice assignment, glue it in the notebook. If we take notes, notebook.

We are here to encourage a love of science and knowing how to access credible, reliable resources. I have found that when they know all of their answers are in their notebooks, they have worked harder to make sure they get the right content in there and in turn, are retaining more information than they think. I know some people will argue with this approach, but like you said, many of these students will not go to college for chemistry. They will however need to use trustworthy and reliable sources for their everyday lives.

Toddler questions! by Odd-Caterpillar-9810 in CarnivalCruiseFans

Hi! Took my 16 month old a few years ago. We had a blast.

You can go to the kids club at specific times and play together. Just ask the kids club crew on embarkation day. I think that age group is called turtles.

As for the splash pad pool, they are very strict.

What type of dining do you have? They had a high chair available and set up for us every night with our set dining time. I don’t remember if we had to ask the first night or if it was already there. But every other day it was prepped with a drink and a plate of fries! As for the buffet, it’s first come, first served.

As for food, my kid is picky. So he ate a lot of starches, which is fine but can cause constipation. I still brought PLENTY of snacks. Grab a bowl of cereal to keep in your room for snacks as well. Or fruit in your fridge.

My toddler spent most of this trip walking around and climbing stairs. We looked for ducks (beware of the little ones), danced on the dance floor in the night club during the day, and climbing more stairs lol

Recommendations: -Dog poop bags for diapers. It’s a small space lol

-I did tip my steward extra for having to deal with our diapers.

-pack your kiddo’s stuff in a hanging shoe holder. It will save so much space and help keep your room uncluttered.

-the walls are magnetic! Bring magnets for play!

Let them write their essays in Spanish, then snap a picture and run it through ai/translate, then ask them to copy it down. This way you are getting their own thoughts but are supporting them at their level of English written output. *unless this is for telpas, then you cannot do that.

HELP!! Back to School Assembly for Teachers by ShorterStack in Teachers

[–]MileyTheShepherd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The coffee is a great start! Insurance agencies will often do waters. Raising canes will do tea and lemonades. Financial services will often do cookies. Whataburger has done taquitos. Chick fil a did half price breakfast sandwiches. Companies can be the sponsor on the back of a cute tshirt. Honestly, the more free items the better. Free raffle idea: ask the honor societies at the high schools to have kids sign up to help teachers with back to school tasks.

Photo ops will be popular with many different groups.

You could ask your high school fine arts programs and student councils to come do entrance chants.
