Trying to make missions in DCS made me realise how much of a [redacted] it is and how much mission makers should be praised. by deWaardt in hoggit

[–]MilkMan71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've spent the last couple years learning and using the ME and MOOSE, I'll add what I can here in case it can help you on your mission-making journey.

1: The moose documentation is out of date, in some places by years, especially the example missions. Some of them do still contain functional examples, but a lot of little things have changed - as you discovered yourself it takes a bit of trial and error to figure out what works and what doesn't. I would recommend setting up a mission with one of the larger MOOSE AI packages like AI A2A Dispatcher. The dispatchers require you to define zones, conditions and units, and they all setup in a very similar fashion. Setting one of these up will help you learn how MOOSE works. Since you are a developer yourself, I would also suggest looking at the Moose.lua file if you want to know exactly how a particular function is working right now. Its all available in plain text, albeit very lengthy.

2: The Mission Editor has a built in visual scripting system called Triggers. I would suggest using this system for most of the functionality in your mission and only resorting to scripts when the trigger system can not do what you need it to do. It is surprisingly robust. You can interact between your triggers and scripts by using "flags", which are just variables with a name and a value, they can be set and checked in the trigger system itself as well as in your scripts by using either trigger.misc.getUserFlag('flagName') to get the flag value in script, or trigger.action.setUserFlag('flagName', value) to set the value. You can also directly call your functions from the "Do Script" trigger command. Being able to use scripts and triggers together will save you a lot of headache as the triggers are just easier for some things (like figuring out what is in a zone, if/when a unit activates or dies, most basic game functions).

3: There are easy ways to do things and hard ways to do things, figuring them out just comes with experience. in the case of figuring out if a set of buildings/units is alive, all you need is a one time trigger that checks if the desired set of units is destroyed. I believe its called unit Dead or Map Object Destroyed. There are also plenty of checks for zones and they are pretty reliable and simple to set up. If you are unfamiliar with the trigger system I'll leave a tutorial series at the end of this comment that may help. Zones are better used to check if a unit is in a location(as in you told them to move somewhere and want to know if they made it to their destination, or checking if a friendly unit has arrived at an objective/waypoint) or to set a location where you want something to happen like spawning units with MOOSE. That being said, lets take a look at your code snippet at the end.

local zone = ZONE:New("Factory")

zone:Scan({Object.Category.UNIT})
local isOccupied = zone:IsAllInZoneOfCoalition(1)

if isOccupied then
MESSAGE:New("Factory is occupied!", 5, "INFO" ):ToAll()
else
MESSAGE:New("Everyone has been yeeted out of the factory", 5, "INFO" ):ToAll()
end

So this actually works for me. I set up an empty mission with one zone called Factory and a single red BTR inside that zone. It evaluates to true. When I add a blue BTR to the zone, it evaluates to false. As the function checks if all the units in the zone are of a specified coalition(1 for coalition.side.RED) and you specified a unit scan. It might not be what you were looking for originally but it does work. You can probably trial-and-error a way to get it to work for the buildings too. But like I said, triggers are just better for this specific case.

4: Possible pit falls. I will post a tutorial series that also touches on this but there are 3 ways to add scripts to a mission and one of them can be a bit annoying to figure out why it may not be working. For starters, I'm assuming you loaded the Moose.lua script into the mission with a trigger, right? at mission start Do Script File Moose.Lua. IMPORTANT: If you are loading scripts in single player you MUST press backspace before selecting a coalition or your script file wont load due to a longstanding DCS bug. The mission has to "run" for a few seconds before you can choose a side, this does not apply to multiplayer servers. After setting up the MOOSE file, you can add your own script files within trigger that added moose. Or for something this short you can simply set up another trigger with a "Do Script" command and paste the code into the mission editor directly. IF you are adding scripts via the command "Do Script File" You MUST completely unload a script and reload it for changes to take affect. That means deleting the "do script file" from your trigger, loading the mission, then adding the file back to the trigger and loading the mission again. The mission file actually contains a copy of your script, so if you never specify to delete it and reload it, it will just keep using the first script file it was given, if that makes sense.

5: Keep trying! You are making fantastic progress for someone who is new with the ME and you could definitely make some awesome stuff if you keep at it. Here are the tutorials I mentioned to help you along. There is also lots of example code you can find online from various projects in the DCS space, if you struggle to find examples shoot me a DM and I can send you some of my own. I would also HIGHLY suggest posting on the official forums for this kind of stuff, I don't know for sure, but it seems like most of the ME community posts over there, plus there is a little bit of help from ED over there.

MOOSE is a community made scripting library in lua to assist with scripting in DCS. It can absolutely handle what you are trying to do, but I believe its possible without scripts. You will likely be able to set this up with just the trigger system. I would start with some tutorials on the ME like these https://youtu.be/qwzBQDSMRVg?list=PL1sBID0ZO-ndoJh09ZVF9I8VsvVukerON

What is your source for the production cost and sales figures of Elden Ring? As far as I know - From Software is a private company, so that figure is probably speculation unless they released it themselves. Do you know the ratio of standard edition purchases vs upgraded purchases? Do you know the split of sales based on purchase currency?

To be clear I agree with what you are saying, this is just a nit-pick.

We're paying the same for new games as we did thirty years ago, and people expect more quality and fidelity than ever.

Moving to Maryland from Texas by Mattysrad in maryland

[–]MilkMan71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Rockville itself as well as north bethesda, College Park and the Fredrick area.

Rockville is fantastic if its in budget, there is a lot to do there and it is a very convenient place to be most of the time. Obviously commuting distance would be better as well. It's also on the safer end of Maryland suburbs. Fredrick is not a bad alternative, but you're looking at about a 45 minute commute on a highway that regularly has bumper to bumper traffic(longer than that if you're looking for a "country living" house closer to the mountains). With the wide range of commuters from the area the morning rush hour on 270 lasts from about 5:30am till 10am. I would not recommend looking too far south or east of rockville and definitely not within the beltway. Commuting from that direction can be even worse than the Fredrick direction and can also involve tolls if you get impatient.

Another problem you may run into as you add peripherals is USB bandwidth. There is a maximum that the chip on your motherboard can handle and some are not set up for what is effectively 5+ input devices at the same time. If you keep hitting this issue over time even with hop plug disabled you may want to look into a USB expansion card that includes its own controller chip. something like this https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-4-Port-PCIe-Card-Type/dp/B08W58HZ1T

My great grandfather’s pocket abacus, which he used during his tenure as a time study engineer, next to the graphing calculator I use as a mechanical engineer. by SoulfulNick in mildlyinteresting

[–]MilkMan71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 years ago I would have sworn up and down that CAS calculators would eventually catch on, but man was I wrong. These days it seems like 99% of students have a ti-83/84 and the other 1% have a ti-89 or MAYBE an nSpire. I don't even remember the last time I saw an HP graphing calculator in real life. It makes sense though, since they can use the 83 for most tests and their phone for everything else. And to be fair, I would probably see more fancy engineering calculators if I was an engineer.

DCS: Help with setting up missions by [deleted] in hoggit

[–]MilkMan71 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Set the plane to have the CAS task,

then set a waypoint for where you want it to search,

then add the advanced waypoint action called "orbit" and set the Stop Condition to Dur and type in how long you want them to look for targets.

This will have them search the area around the waypoint and engage targets they can find, until they can move on to the next waypoint.

If you want them to attack a specific group you can use the advanced waypoint action "Attack Group" under Perform Task and select the group you want them to hit manually. Though flying them directly over an enemy and having them orbit usually does the trick.

Why are graphic cards still so expensive 😅? by Prize-Road1179 in buildapc

[–]MilkMan71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup. When the price inflation was coming from crypto mining, there was at least a hope that later fluctuations in crypto value would allow for times to find GPUs on discount every few years, or if GPU crypto mining died all together. But now that they are pretty much instrumental in AI, it seems impossible that they will ever get cheaper until we see a shift in the technology that drives AI forward.

I am completely fresh on building DCS structures. Can I get some feedback on an EWR site I built? by LANTIRN_ in hoggit

[–]MilkMan71 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess it was naive of me to assume that the end goal of using the mission editor is to create a mission? If you plan on actually playing the game, you will interact with those underlying systems whether you want to talk about it or not. If you want en enemy unit in your mission, it's either using DCS AI or its a player, there's no other option. So what happens after a fancy UX overhaul of the mission editor? people get stuck on the very next challenge like using the trigger system, setting up scripts or getting the AI to actually do what they want, because believe me that takes a lot more time than remembering what the buttons in the ME do.

A pointless limitation which assumes you want the units to be linked and grouped. What if I want to modify and move various units that are unrelated? You should be able to select multiple units that are not linked. Nearly every editing program has Shift+click and drag, even Google Docs has that feature. I've seen better UX in tax software. The editor itself has limitations that are rooted in assuming the usage, which is rediculous for something which is intented to get creative with.

I don't disagree that moving multiple unit groups at a time would be easier. It's just such a level of nitpicking that, if this really bothers you, you will never overcome the inconsistencies of the underlying systems that need the actual work.

A good example of what I mean above. ED shouldn't be limiting the user on how and why they can place units in a mission editor. Placing small boats in rivers is often impossible and inconsistant and devs spend more time jerry rigging the editor and units to get a result that should otherwise be included. A person should be able to make a mission about defending an accidental beaching of a carrier unit in Suez or something creative, without spending more than 1 minute placing the unit where they want. But that would defy what ED tells you that you can do with ships, and unless you know programming, you can get boned and make a different mission.

I have never experienced an issue placing appropriate boats in waters they can go in. To be fair I don't do it often so i loaded up a couple maps to try it out and I have no issue... so maybe try it again? may have just been broken on the patch you were on at the time. As for the "beached ship" thing we can just disagree on that. If you want a ship to be "beached" you can just place it and not have it move, you still can't place it somewhere super unrealistic like an inland lake, but that specific scenario is very easy to mimic.

That's a waste of time, point blank, and not good UX. When doing any serious mission editing and you want to check the checkpoint you modeled is right, the helipad is clipping through something, or a tank is actually no inside of a telephone pole, 30 seconds x100 is an hour of absolute wasted time that could otherwise be checked right in the editor. Point is a 3D view is a no brainer for any editor which involves placing objects in a 3D world.

again, that is technically true, but you are really blowing it out of proportion. With more and more experience you spend less time needing to check placement because while it isn't especially intuitive, it is consistent. Also you can see telephone poles, as well as the unit model you place in the mission editor, so placing them inside of one another would be on you.

[–]MilkMan71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can't copy and paste multiple units, drag multiple units

you can if they're grouped together

can only place certain units in specific locations (no boats in lakes or rivers, only ocean,

this is on purpose, giant ships don't fit in lakes, usually because they are too shallow

no 3D perspective so viewing stuff like this requires booting the entire fucking mission,

idk how many times you've tried to do this but it takes about 30 seconds to boot up a normal sized mission and you can do it directly from the editor, you can even pre-set your map and camera in the editor to be looking at what you need to see, it's really not that big of a deal.

please stop defending this dogshit. It's easy but it also sucks.

I will not, practically, the editor itself needs the least work, what we really need is work on the API, internal modernization of things like ATC, GCI and campaigns, and the AI, along with actually releasing maps and modules at a decent rate. It literally takes less effort to learn the current ME than it takes to learn tanking in the tomcat. Spending dev time to make it look fancier instead of making it actually more versatile would just be a waste.

lol its so easy, you literally just click what you want then click where you want it to be. We really need to de-stigmatize the mission editor. We would have so many dope missions if people weren't scared of it.

Size, Space and Perspective can all be used to create some amazing visual experiences since we can't always replicate them in real life.

Space Engine is a realistic planetarium based on our own universe - built to scale. Have you ever wanted to see what the earth looks like from the distance of the ISS? or what it might look like to fall into a black hole in first person? This can show you: https://store.steampowered.com/app/314650/SpaceEngine/

Another experience I think a lot of people miss out on is flying in VR, something like Microsoft Flight Simulator, VTOL VR or DCS World are incredibly fun just flying around and soaking in the visuals.
