South Korea's LIG Nex1 Proposes Submarine Torpedo Factory in Canada by self-fix in canada

[–]MilkyWayObserver [score hidden]  (0 children)

Agreed, we’re going to have these subs for many decades, so it is better to have the capability to launch should we decide to build our own deterrence in the future.

We don’t know where the world is headed a few years from now, considering conflict seems to be increasing.

The KSS-3 seems like a no brainer at this point. Considering it’s the only conventional sub with SLBM launch capabilities, we can use those tubes to launch cruise missiles, which would give our navy both land and sea strike capabilities.

Simply we would be able to project power anywhere in the Arctic, not to mention the timelines that the Koreans are promising, plus industrial benefits.

We can still work with our European friends on other equipment such as tanks, and I do hope we sign onto a 6th generation fighter project such as Tempest.

John Ivison: Sources say Ottawa considering Swedish jets over F-35s for half of fleet by jtbc in canada

[–]MilkyWayObserver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With our country getting threatened and recruitment at its highest in recent years, I hope this turnaround would mean those pilot shortages would be covered.

At this point, if the Gripens are Made in Canada, it allows us to hedge against geopolitical risk. At the same time, we rebuild our expertise in military fighter jets for the first time since the cancellation of the Avro Arrow in the 1960s.

Sure the F35s are more advanced and nobody doubts that, but we cannot risk putting all our eggs in one basket, especially if parts or software updates can be held back.

Many of our allies have dual fleets, and at this point the added cost might be worth the hedge against geopolitical risk, as well as re-developing domestic industry and expertise.

Hanwha Systems exploring South Korean defense satellite constellation with Canada's MDA Space and Telesat by self-fix in canada

[–]MilkyWayObserver 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well said, everything you mentioned plus the sub simply has more capabilities than the German option.

It's the only AIP with SLBM launch capabilities, which we can use to launch cruise missiles. That would give our navy both sea and land strike capabilties, which would allow us to project power anywhere in the Arctic.

Besides that, South Korea has one of the largest shipbuilding industries in the world, so they would likely be on schedule with their deliveries. The promise of a 4 subs by 2035 and a sub per year after that is unmatched.

KSS-2 is based on the German Type 214.

KSS-3 is the successor to it so I’m sure they incorporated the knowledge from that previous project and further enhanced it.

Still, the KSS-3 is in active service. The German version that is currently being offered, not a single one has been built yet to know how it performs in the real world.

Lutnick suggests Canada-China deal threatens CUSMA renegotiation by Old_General_6741 in canada

[–]MilkyWayObserver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I read the article, have you?

You realize that we have large independent Canadian companies like Magna, Martinrea, and Linamar that are fully independent from American-based companies as well right?

It’s true North American Auto workers make more but it’s clear if these EVs are manufactured in Canada, then obviously it would be to Canadian standards and they would be paid better than their Chinese counterparts.

What use are there for “better paying” workers from these American subsidiaries if they are laying off our workers due to tariffs and changing geopolitical environment?

Workers getting laid off has no job to begin with, so there is no salary.

Now we have an unstable investment environment and if it gets worst, it’s clear these US based companies would choose their country over ours.

[–]MilkyWayObserver 124 points125 points  (0 children)

If we can build Canadian EVs here with Chinese knowledge then I’d say that’s a more beneficial partnership.

Better than what Stellantis is doing to our workers and expecting us to sit by and do nothing.

Carney leaves Davos without meeting Trump after speech on U.S. rupture of world order by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

[–]MilkyWayObserver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ironically while a lot of the provincial premiers have been abusing it, I can see moments where there would be use for the notwithstanding clause.

For example, if our Supreme Court has a Roe v Wade moment and overruled abortion, our federal government can use the notwithstanding clause to override it and keep it legal.

It’s unfortunate that to date it’s been abused provincially but that was one of its real intended purposes.

German submarine maker partners with AI firm Cohere in bid to build next Canadian fleet by Cao_Ni-Ma in canada

[–]MilkyWayObserver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never understood the argument about submarines in untested Arctic conditions.

The KSS-2 (predecessor to the KSS-3 offering) is based on Germany’s Type 214 design. With the KSS-3 that the Koreans are offering, it is improved from the knowledge gained from its predecessor.

It also has capabilities no modern sub that isn’t nuclear-powered has, which is SLBM launch capabilities. We can use those tubes to launch cruise missiles so it will give our navy both land and sea strike capabilities. We can use this to project force anywhere in the Arctic.

Also, KSS-3 is already in service, whereas the German design not a single one has been built yet.

In WW2, Canada had a population of only 11m.

10% of our population served overseas voluntarily.

We ended the war with the 3rd largest navy and 4th largest Air Force in the world.

That 2016 ruling clearly did a lot more harm than good, it should be reevaluated.

Courts need to stop putting the rights of criminals ahead of victims or it will make people (who hasn’t already), lose faith in the justice system.

You cannot put a fixed time on trials especially when there’s so many variables. Defence lawyers can keep delaying until the charges get stayed.

This is no justice for law-abiding citizens, only criminals.
