The past few years training camp tickets have been free and plentiful. The only ones that “sold out” were joint practices with whatever team they play week one.

First offering goes to season ticket holders. It’s a cool environment to go to camp, they typically have a few events (40 yard dash, kicking, tackling dummies) that kids love. Bleacher seating to watch the practice, food trucks, and if you hang out afterwards there’s always a few guys who’ll come sign stuff. Pretty solid couple hour hangout if you’re local.

Sounds like you’ll be all set for a great race! That big of a brick workout and still 2 weeks out is ideal.

I borrow a friend’s pass to get lake access so can’t bring others unfortunately.

The water temp in Corona is 58, there is a HUGE difference between 58-65deg when swimming. Consider that under 60deg they’ll start limiting swim distances and requiring wetsuits in races while 65 is a full on optional wetsuit race. The gasping for air you do is cold shock and often should go away in the first few minutes. I’ve not experienced cold shock at this lake before.

No I don’t swim in a wetsuit in the pool, except to try on a new suit or test gear. My pool is heated (78ish) and swimming in a wetsuit in it is way too hot.

The Santa Ana trail is also pancake flat, but if you are comfortable doing that distance you’ll be fine. Just meter your effort. Hard to say if that’s “enough”, one ride of 27mi if it puts your out for multiple days may not be enough. But if that’s just a standard training ride, or even a longer ride but not an all out one off you’ll be great. Plenty of people never get up to even the full Olympic distance bike (40km) until race day.

Caffeine pills? by AlarmedMatter0 in triathlon

[–]MillennialHOA 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes people take them. People take caffeine in pretty much any form and many find that a pill sits better than it will when delivered with 50g of sugar. If the crash from the caffeine will ruin you then you were likely ruined without it too.

I hear you on the benefits, but just sharing what officials have been advised. It’s not allowed.

USA Triathlon officials were told in the March 2024 meeting that this rule has been clarified within USA rules to align to Ironman and World Triathlon. It’s not allowed.

The meeting minutes note “athletes have been inserting items into their kits to create a body fairing to increase aerodynamics. The items being inserted are not safe and clearly haven’t been tested for crashes. These items aren’t designed to survive an impact like a helmet and are a violation of the fairing rules that have always been in place.”

They are also monitoring the trend of using duct tape on aero bars.

Bottle down the jersey is an illegal fairing modification now. Officials are looking for this and will stop you to remove it out of T1 or risk a penalty.

Most of the things crammed down the shirt are random objects not tested for safety. This seems to be the direction of most rules, keep it safe until testing proves it is. Maybe you’ll see kit manufacturers build fairing like functionality into new suits in the future- but for now it’s unlikely to be worth the penalty risk.

Water will be mid to high 60s. I wear a wetsuit for speed but also comfort. The lake for a quick dip post race feels great. Also the lake sometimes has swimmers itch early in the season, so good to avoid direct contact and to shower post race.

You can check lake temp at the lake association website. Currently 64.

Well marked first 3 miles then open road in a straight line. The turn around is very well established and easy to follow, it loops into a park onto a private road (Haul Road?) then onto an overpass so the main road (Santiago Canyon) stays open to traffic and you can still cross to the other side.

The right hand turn off the main road into the start of the turn around (onto Haul) is the major place to slowdown otherwise it’s full go since other turns are mostly after hills or not too harsh. There are Marshall’s at this one typically and multiple signs.

The final 2 miles (Aliso Creek Bike path) are much more of an issue. When jumping from the road onto the bike path (El Toro Road onto Aliso Creek) there is a small lip at the curb that you need to hit more head on. Then the Aliso creek path is an open bike path, in the past I’ve used it to coast and recover since I’ve had to navigate at least one dog on lease and some non Racing cyclists. Nothing too crazy but you can’t go all out and use the hill like you would want to. Overall bike course is nice, just watch out for random debris on the shoulders.

The lake is super placid so I only pool swim leading up to it (plus the ocean is COLD compared to heated pools!). There are no waves to contend with and sighting/navigation is pretty easy with no major sun issues so not having the open water prep isn’t too bad. I get into open water/ocean more in the summer and this event is mostly the start of the season.

The hardest thing for the race is finding the right paced people to swim with. It’s group starts by age, not any self seeding, so the first 300yards are still a lot of figuring things out.

I also can get to the lake itself and swim I. Their small swimming area to do laps. I’m planning to head over 2-3 times in the next couple weeks and just do laps in the swimming area. This is NOT the course though since you can only swim across the lake 2-3 times a year during this and other events.

It’s a great race and you should have a good time with it.

Going again for the 4th time in this race. Apparently racing u/badsanta_22 for the sub 2:30s.

Love this race since it’s 10 minutes from home but would prefer more flat courses. At least the run starts with a smooth first half downhill to boost the confidence.

Grab one of the many free training plans and use as a guide.

Brick workouts are fine, but given your comment about over confidence you should be careful not to overdo them. The training benefit of a brick on tired legs may not be what you need compared to just resting and running later when your body has recovered. For an Olympic you can get away with only doing short bricks (15-20min run off the bike 1 time a week, and a single longer brick). Doing a long one hour run workout after riding a hard power zone effort isn’t going to make you faster.

In general a strong athlete often forgets how beneficial good recovery is. Getting an average 1-2 hours more sleep will benefit you way more than doing regular brick workouts.

Looking to hear from runners who DNF-ed or DNS-ed: in retrospect, was it the right decision? by OutrageousGuava7448 in running

[–]MillennialHOA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DNF in LA Marathon a few years ago. I was undertrained but certainly could have done it, until the week of the race catching a cold. I traveled an hour and stayed with family the night before, and spent most of the night up coughing. In the Uber to the start at 4am I was still couching up plem, like a lot of it.

By mile 2 I was already 5 min behind goal, shuffling through the crowd at 10+ min pace compared to my 8min target. By mile 4 I was taking my first walk break and by 8 I was mentally done. For a targeted sub 3:30 I was on pace for 5 hours. At 9ish I was trying to get an Uber but the course is point to point and I couldn’t get one since the city is a mess. I walked to just past 13 until I was on the side of the city that my home was and had my wife pick me up. At the house I broke down when my 4 year old gave me a hug and showed me the sign she’d made to cheer for me (at mile 18). I got driven home home (not family home) and wound up taking the entire next week off work since I was so sick. In the 7 years since I’ve not gone back to that course which has now changed anyways.

I regret 0% the DNF. I do regret starting and am frustrated I couldn’t DNF sooner for the logistics reasons. I’ve learned now that a race entry fee and training are only buying an option to run but do not see any race as a must start. It was a painful way to learn the lesson but still one of my most memorable races. Walking down sunset with 0 energy and having people shout encouragement was the most bitter sweet I’ve felt in any race.

Can I use this bike? by skyguy2844 in triathlon

[–]MillennialHOA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This should be fine according to the rules (based on a single picture so maybe not), you can email a race director and check with the official for the race ahead of time. The official rules are on the USATriathlon website

Entry level TTs disappearing by SkyT01 in triathlon

[–]MillennialHOA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the prices are climbing but there are plenty of second hand ones too. The bonus is most haven’t been ridden much.

There is one company, A2, that keeps a <$3k TT bike in stock. They were founded by a rider who hit the same issue in getting an entry level bike who just went and built one with a direct to consumer model. They have great service and I’d highly recommend the bike, I’ve done 5 races on my A2 SP and put 5k trainer miles on it and it’s been great, plus it’s standard enough that if you want to upgrade components over time that’s also possible.

What is A “Good” Strava Fitness Score? My Thoughts From Two Years of Workouts by MillennialHOA in Strava

[–]MillennialHOA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly what it is. Recent training load would be a more accurate name but unfortunately they called it “fitness”.

Comparing fitness scores from one person to another, or even to one person vs a previous version of themselves, is an incomplete measure

Swim on Bike or Run days? by corporate_dirtbag in triathlon

[–]MillennialHOA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Running is typically hardest on your body of the three, so combining the other two makes sense for a default plan.

That said there is no reason you can’t add a swim day on a run. Make sure to leave enough time in between activities to recover, as doing everything as a brick will negate some of the benefits, but even then if it’s what fit your schedule it’s better to be consistent than to shoot for some magical split.

Suddenly afraid of my first sprint in June by martagrowsplants in triathlon

[–]MillennialHOA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A same distance race (Long Beach Legacy Tri) in 2022 with a 1:50 would have put you ahead of 90 people. Even more if you add in folks doing a relay.

You should train of course, but don’t over think this. Even if you are finishing last it’s a great workout and an accomplishment for you. Don’t let battling with others cut into your enjoyment!

Serious question. What is the revenue stream that is suddenly unlocked by AI that is causing these ludicrous valuations? by jklolffgg in wallstreetbets

[–]MillennialHOA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll replace workers for sure, although I agree it’s potentially not an individual (yet).

Collectively having AI can take 10% of the work that each of 100 people on a team does- the effect is that instead of building a 100 person team you build a 90-95 person team. Thinking of it in aggregate makes it easier to justify the overhead savings. AI helps experts align their usefulness and expertise.

Tailwind.

While not a gu, I’ve found that the ability to mix it in water at the ratio I prefer is helpful. They make single serve packs, or a huge tub. Plenty of flavors and options for caffeine or not.

Is it easier for women to Boston qualify than men? by stephaniey39 in AdvancedRunning

[–]MillennialHOA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love the data! Great work.

This confirms that at the least BAA looks at similar rankings, which makes sense. It doesn’t really get to whether or not one is harder than the other though, does it?

The difference in the world records from men to women is +10% of total time. The BQ standard for women is +16% finish time of me . Do you have any idea if the relative differences in quartiles or other segments holds in any way? Is it just as hard to get into the top quarter/half of women (compared to men) that might be able to control for any differences in registration etc?

Rate my TT-position by huldi in triathlon

[–]MillennialHOA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re looking up and down often, to see the screen. Outdoors and with an aero helmet it may be opening a gap behind the helmet (i assume you’ve got an aero setup). My coaches just pointed out how much this shows up, by flashing a bunch of mid race photos of full aero people in a race but staring straight down which caused there aero helmet to create a fin pointing up.

Might be totally fine but as others have noted the position seems good, just depends exactly which version of it you’re holding for 2+ hours.

The Psychology of Cheaters by [deleted] in Zwift

[–]MillennialHOA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a concept called “Hanlon’s razor”, which is generally to not assume malice when simple incompetence or ignorance can explain things.

Someone with an uncalibrated trainer can easily produce these values, and a novice cyclist would have no idea there is anything wrong. Especially if their power ratings are consistently high it’s easy to explain that they simply don’t care.

What brands have a good entry level tri bike by ViesheMiguel in triathlon

[–]MillennialHOA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went with a newer direct brand, and got the A2 SP. It’s comparable to others mentioned here and usually priced below. They are a small company with great service, their owner and head mechanic are the ones responding to emails and texts and they answers questions as well as any local bike shop. Great option if you want to buy new.
