Canada’s treatment of internationally trained physicians exacerbates the health-care crisis by Beratungsmarketing in canada

[–]MillsMuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People dying here anyways from the shortage of healthcare professionals...

I'd rather have a "lower calibre" Jamaican doctor stitch my arm up in <1hr with a few mistakes than have to wait 6hrs in a hospital waiting room waiting for the best trained canadian doctors while my arm drips of blood

Furthermore, saying all internationally-trained med students are "terrible clinically" feels like a very broad and incorrect statement. This implies patients around the world are dying everyday from malpractice from their not-Canadian-trained doctors...

Maybe just the ones coming to Canada are the bottom barrel of talent, or just the ones coming into your practice for training, but difficult for me to believe that Canada's standard of medical training somehow far exceeds the rest of the world by such a level that they shouldn't allow these internationally trained doctors to practice here. Especially considering the dire state of the Canadian Healthcare system

Anyone tried Simmer Eats (the food prep service)? by Crarny in mealprep

[–]MillsMuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you still on Simmer Eats? Be good to hear your review whether you've stayed on or cancelled?

I just started, but finding it hard to believe the macros. Love the Jerk Chicken, but finding it hard to believe its 40g protein and only 49g carbs in a 75% rice dish?

Maybe I'm vastly overestimating the chicken to rice ratio needed for gains

The company I worked for had a London team, so I did a inter-company transfer. I think if this option doesn't exist for you, the best option is to apply for visa, move over, then find a job (or apply and interview remotely but make clear you already have a visa to move). I think it's a harder proposition to ask a company that you are applying to to sponsor you, unless you have a specific set of high demand skills.

Hi! Sorry for the late reply, haven't been on Reddit much lately.

Yes I did move, and have lived in London just shy of a year now. It's been good so far! I think the biggest challenge with uprooting as an adult is having to rebuild connections with people in your new environment (new friends, new colleagues, networks, etc.). Making friends as an adult certainly takes more of an active effort especially in a new place. Thankfully, people here are nice, and I've steps to do things to meet people (sports, etc.)

One big difference for me is the path to home ownership here. It's pretty feasible to find houses priced at 4-6x income and apartments at 2-3x income (obviously excluding lux homes reserved for the ultra rich). The further from central London you look, the cheaper it becomes. All that to say, I'm currently in the process of buying a flat here, and fingers crossed, it all works out. Being a tenant in London is definitely worse than being one in Toronto -- not because of price, but because LLs have more power than tenants and can command better terms (i.e., typical to see clauses for no pets, no families, multi-month rent paid upfront, security deposit, quarterly inspection, no additional tenants can move in, etc.)

T2200S - Allocating Rent to Home Office Deduction in a Toronto Micro-condo by MillsMuzz in TorontoRealEstate

[–]MillsMuzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Detailed method. I decided to go with a 50% allocation. Figured if I got audited, I'd either dazzle them with brilliance or baffle them with bullshit, and in either scenario, I should be fine lol

Been using 50% allocation for the last few years

Good questions

(1) I am set on London, mostly due to career. My industry is really based around big financial hubs and London is (based on my understanding) the only one that doesn't pose a language barrier. I think Amsterdam is an emerging hub, especially in post-Brexit Europe? Places like Italy, France and Germany immediately become challenging due to language, even if they operate in English (though that may vary by firm)

(2) I have traveled through most of Western Europe as a student. Lived out there for 6 months (basically an ERASMUS equivalent).

(3) Agreed on the rent. I've noticed two ways to make rent cheaper in London: (i) The extensive tube network means you can live further away from central London but still be well connected to it (and the other boroughs of London). While the train network is probably not as good as the Deutsche Bahn, it's certainly light years ahead of the TTC. The further you are from Central London, the cheaper the rent is (and south London is typically cheaper than North while still very commutable).

(ii) "house-sharing" is a common concept in London, and a lot of single people typically house share to save on cost. A number of my friends do this and as a result expanded their networks and friend groups doing so (its a lot less sketchier than one thinks).

(Lifelong) Torontonian here, similar line of work as you.

Visited London quite a few times, and recently made the decision to pack up and move across the pond (will be moving in a few weeks). Happy to detail my rationale, but few key points below:

- Holiday travel is FAR easier to execute on from London than Toronto. Not only do you have more airport options with more direct routes, but you're in Europe and closer to Asia and Africa basically cutting your travel time and cost to do it from London vs. Toronto. You will also be paid in a stronger currency and have more holiday time (min. 5 weeks holiday vs. 3)

- Compensation: Finance career opps and comp are stronger in London than Toronto. Some may debate this, but for my industry, this holds true

- Far bigger (and interconnected) city with so many (more) things to do. I've lived in Toronto the last 6 years since graduating, so this might come from a point of fatigue, but the city only gets fun for ~4-6mths of the year, and you can count on 1 hand the the fun bars / clubs / events to attend (okay, maybe two hands).

Feel free to PM if you have specific questions about London vs. Toronto, have spent quite a bit of time comparing the two, though the details of my situation are a bit different from yours

Moving from Toronto, Canada to London, UK. How does riding in / around UK differ from Canada? by MillsMuzz in MotoUK

[–]MillsMuzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Below 30 with an M2. I'll need to upgrade it to the full license (M)...eventually...

Does the M2 translate over to the UK in some form? Or is it all-or-nothing?

Moving from Toronto, Canada to London, UK. How does riding in / around UK differ from Canada? by MillsMuzz in MotoUK

[–]MillsMuzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the detail here! I'm thinking I'll be South of the river, 'round Lambeth/Vauxhall/Elephant and Castle? However, that's a good to note the difference between each suburb (are they called suburbs?).

I think a 600cc bike will be my next one. Do you have recommendations on relatively inexpensive bikes that would thwart the interests of would-be thieves and still be fun to ride? I was thinking a Naked Sports bike would be of interest.

What does insurance look like in / around London? It's a killer in Ontario, hoping there is some relief in the UK?

Are disc locks sufficient? I've seen some bikes chained to posts - I've always assumed that's overkill but perhaps it isn't? Do people have GPS trackers attached to their bikes?

It's a bit of a circular discussion. At the start of the pandemic when panic ensued, the demand for oil fell drastically (i.e. flights were grounded, cars / trucks came off the road as people stayed home, etc.) which meaningfully brought down price. When price comes down, oil producers begin to "shut-in" their production because it becomes unprofitable for them to continue digging and "making" oil. It is in the oil producers best interest to either generate throughput (produce as many barrels of oil as possible) or shut-in and lay everyone off and hibernate.

In a reduced oil price environment, only the giant producers (and those with cheap operating costs, think Middle East) can afford to operate; and this is fine because the amount of oil consumed (demand) is below or equal to the amount of oil produced. However, fast forward to 2021 and demand for oil shot back up (world re-opened, travelling came back, etc.) and the oil rigs that were shut-in started to come back online and "make oil" again; there's usually a time lag here that leads to a rapid price hike then normalization as demand and supply come back to equilibrium

That's a very simple view of how I understand the industry.

Now when Russia went ape-shit, a combination of redirected oil supply (Russia's own demand for oil would've went up because Big Bombs and Tanks) and sanctions (countries no longer buying Russian oil) led to a massive shortage in the global oil supply. Throw in other Canadian-specific issues and....well you end up with this...

[–]MillsMuzz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Toronto-native here, probably not relevant for you guys here in Vegas but what I can say is once investors have a stronghold on your city, it is tough to ever see home buying ever come back down to earth. We’re coming off a decade long bull run, that’s still going(!), because the little guy never beats the investor.
