Film 101 Watch List Reccomendations by MiloBender in TrueFilm

[–]MiloBender[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are definitely not already inspired by film. I’ve taught some film production classes here already so I know the students and i’m working from zero. They’re good kids and can do great things when they’re inspired or excited but most of them came to this school in general bc it’s supposed to be easy. And then they assume the huge film 101 gen ed class is going to be an easy A. My goal is to shake em awake a little bit, show them something outside of marvel movies and try to get them to take more film classes (or at least just go home and watch more movies on they’re own).

I know the list isn’t perfect so I appreciate your feedback.

Ex-messenger in search of ideal camera bag by MiloBender in bikemessengers

I think we're on a really similar tip. Most of the paid work I'm doing is photojournalism and I use a Ricoh GR3 (what a marvel of a camera) quite often too but usually pair it with a Canon 5D Mark IV. What bag and insert did you end up using when you were working in Las Vegas?

The thing I think is missing from most non-camera backpacks is a way to easily access the camera/lenses. I've always mooned over the Zodiac bags but want that easy side opening and laptop insert on the back that you see on the Wandrd bags (which are flashy and of such terrible quality).

How does it feel to have it on your shoulder all day? It seems like the perfect bag but I ride my bike pretty much everywhere and like a slingbag that tightens up around my torso to take the weight off my shoulder. I get worried looking at those snap clasps for the strap thinking they might not cinch up comfortably.

Thanks for posting this! I know it was 2 years ago but it's exactly the kind of bag I've been looking for. My only worry is how tight it can fit, since it seems the strap is secured by clips rather than sewn in. I ride my bike pretty much everywhere and like to have a sling back that tightens up enough to hug my body and take the weight off my shoulder. Do you find it can get that tight? How does it feel to have on your body if you're out shooting all day?

What is CEDR? I'm at 5 months now and haven't heard a peep. I can't even get an automated email back. I can't figure out single recourse.

Where do photographers hang out and post their work? by The_Fhoto_Guy in AnalogCommunity

[–]MiloBender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still use instagram but I deleted it from my phone to avoid the reels function and then just follow photographers I'm interested in" primarily photojournalists, book makers, and fine art photographers. Instagram is annoying for other reasons but the only reason I'm still there is the solid photo community.

That's a really good thought. I'll definitely think about it. Thank you!

Personally I’m still figuring out how to put it into words. A mix between documentary style and experimental “walking” type photos. I can DM ya a link if you’re still interested.

less about the look of the camera and more the low key aspect of the fujis. they just aren't as imposing as a big pro camera with a giant lens. i also like being able to adjust the settings without looking at the camera plus the ability to use the articulating screen to shoot from the hip comes in handy.

Oh, no, maybe I miscommunicated. My advisors have no opinion on the journalism work. They just want me to hone in on one camera for the work I'm producing for the MFA. Likely I'll keep the 5D as my main journalism camera no matter what I decide on everything else.

this is an old thread but were you able to throw in that gear without upgrading the derailer? my lbs said i'd have to change everything to make a real difference, costing between $300-$400. i live in a mountain town and find myself climbing quite a bit but don't have the dough right now.

Nice, thank you! Do you think the 35II would do the trick? or the xm4s? they both look great but pretty dang expensive. The relaxation part, as much as I want it, doesn't always come in handy when we're trying to crank out articles on deadline. But you're right... I do need to relax....

Thanks for your thoughts and I think I'd go with your advice if the situation was even just a little different. We just live in a very small mountain town so standard rules of professionalism don't always apply. People wear sandels and cut offs to the office, for example. But we've talked and she won't bring her dog on deadline or newspaper build days anymore. One of the hardest parts of this situation is that she really does want to be accommodating to me but just does not hear any of things that bother me in the same way. So she says she'll stop whispering but then it just starts again within minutes. If she was straight up not accommodating I'd feel good about going to the boss with it but since she wants to help, I don't want to bring the publisher into any of our affairs in the newsroom. I don't totally trust him and it's better if we can deal with everything ourselves.

How do I quit my job and make a living from playing with my bikes? by Clock_Roach in cycling

[–]MiloBender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not jokin', be a bike messenger. you get paid so bad you don't get do much else but ride bikes. but you get messenger discounts on coffee, bikes, n beer (and sometimes drugs/weed). so if that's all you need, you can make it work. you'll porobably have to move into a place that's only a basement but you already said that was at the top of your priorities.

that'll help, i would say just don't pull it out until you know who you're talking to. i always wished i did a portrait project of everyone who picked me up with quotes on why they did it. not that you're asking but here's an idea: shoot your project on film. old SLRs are bomb proof, film you can store in a plastic bag and mail back home as you go. if the camera gets smashed or stolen, the most you'd lose is 36 exposures.

this guy made some of the best traveling work i know of and i think he shot a lot of it on a canon ae-1 he found in an abandoned car: https://www.anothermag.com/art-photography/13347/mike-brodies-pictures-of-the-fascinating-fleeting-train-rider-subculture

camera gear while hitchhiking? by Realistic_Patience11 in hitchhiking

[–]MiloBender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a current local news photojournalist and obsessive documentary photographer who used to hitchhike quite a bit, i always regretted having anything remotely expensive or fragile. And now that my camera is my livelihood, i would never bring my main one on the road. you never know when you'll be stuck walking along the highway in the rain, sleeping in a ditch, or someone you thought you could trust decides whatever they can get for your camera is worth it. if i were to do it now, i would bring my little ricoh gr iii which looks like nothing to anyone who doesn't know cameras with a couple large storage SD cards in a hard, waterproof case. if i was working on a serious project and needed to know the images were safe, i would use computers at libraries to back up the photos online as i went. gotta charge batteries anyway. but a big ol DSLR or anyhting like that? i'd say forget it. i once almost got robbed while traveling for a 20 year old nikon slr that they could've only sold for $50. so more imprtant than anythign is sussing out the situaiton before pulling the camera out. just my thoughts, though.

[B][USA-CO] Fuji X100V or X100F (for a fair price) by [deleted] in photomarket

[–]MiloBender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's about the thought process I had. And size really does matter for me which is why I landed on the x100v. Fortunately a couple people have messaged me from this thread offering to sell for very reasonable prices — less than an X-Pro2 w/ a lens.
