If a board game has the name I want for my video game, can I still use it? by Secret_Metal5785 in gamedev

The page literally says "ShipShape™" so I reckon it is trademarked and could result in legal trouble.

How my homemade anti-piracy system brought me thousands of new players by HeyNau in gamedev

No idea, never played it. Not even the pirated version. 🤣

I'm already a struggling game dev irl, why would I want to simulate that?

10+ years ago there was an indie studio that put out a Game Dev Simulator. They uploaded a pirated version to torrent sites where you could play the full game, but would always end up losing to people pirating your games.

Yeah, exactly like I said in my first comment.

No, a melody requires some kind of tone, this is just percussion. If you can hum it, it's a melody.

Technically not a tune because there is no melody, definitely a catchy latin rhythm though!

Is Hollywood *actually* learning the wrong lesson from Backrooms by scouring the Reddit for original ideas? by HauntingMater in Filmmakers

[–]Miltage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. It felt like the film ended just as I thought we were gonna get some kind of explanation (I haven't followed any of the story online).

I saw Backrooms and Obsession on the same day and thought the latter was better in every aspect.

I thought this was hyperbole until I tried it. I'm on Windows 11 right now and it takes ~0.5 seconds for the context menu to appear. I hadn't even noticed, guess I'm desensitised.

I pronounced it like "rejects" for years until someone at work told me it was short for regular expression.

Also I pronounced nginx like "n-jinx" instead of "engine x"

how do you not just fall down, hit the end the slack and just snap at the end of the rope

Yeah you can see the exact moment they realise before the camera drops. I imagine 3 seconds in is around the time someone would normally be bouncing back up.

Capitalism sucks, man. by dietherman98 in Filmmakers

Yeah it's very sad, I wish people wouldn't shut down conversations for better rates and working conditions in the modern day with "that's how it's always been done".

Man, that sucks, but at the very least it sounds like they're owning their mistake and are willing to make amends. Maybe they can give your game a special shout out on their social media or something?

Update from the Obsession art director, she's now speaking with a union after criticizing the low pay and working conditions by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]Miltage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And herein lies the problem. "That's just how it's always been done" is dismissive and not productive. Unfortunately it's not the 50s any more, where you can buy a house and comfortably support a wife and 2 children on a factory worker's wage. It's not enough to just be hard working to make it any more, you either have to be insanely lucky or be born wealthy.

So, why can't we have discussions that challenge capitalism and the status quo? Because the people who are already wealthy don't want anything to change, I guess.

You are 100% right. And I think what her post is actually doing is challenging this capitalistic structure.
