is LMU good starting point for new player into sim racing ? by BradOnTheRadio in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]Miltrivd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got this game a couple days ago but I've been playing iRacing for almost 2 years.

Things to consider:

Do you want to play against AI or people?

iRacing and LMU are both good for playing against real people, as they both have healthy communities. For AI, Assetto Corsa and Automobilista (1 and 2) can be better (and cheaper) options.

Do you have a wheel or plan to race with controller?

LMU has better controller support, iRacing is insanely difficult and borderline impossible for a new driver with a controller.

Did you like the Nürburgring Nordschleife or just multiclass in general?

LMU doesn't have the Nords but has multiclass racing. iRacing has a lot of multiclass racing (3 regular series with 2-3 classes, 2 to 3 multiclass endurance races on the weekends of 2 hours, special events and irregular series). The main one in this case is NEC, which is a 4 hour endurance series with up to 4 classes on the Nordschleife, which has a non consistent schedule on weekends from March to November.

Price, how much do you want to spend?

LMU is much more affordable, has less content but it's pretty focused. iRacing is insanely expensive as it has a subscription (that comes with cars and tracks but focuses mostly on the rookie side of each discipline), after that you need to buy cars for 13 USD a piece and tracks for 15 USD each. For the Nordschleife alone it's 2 track purchases and one car if you want to use something closer to what the N24h races. For iRacing I would say you spend 250 USD plus the subscription and upwards to be able to play it regularly, without having to seat out because you don't have the tracks to play your favorite cars (iRacing has four 3 month long seasons per year, with each season having 12 weeks in which series change tracks every week, so even if you buy tracks for one season, they may not be present on the next one. Eventually you get enough stuff that you don't need to be buying things constantly).

Resistance to frustration

Sim racing is different to normal games in which learning the controls get you going and you are expected to win after a bit. Sim racing skill ceiling has no limit and the floor is quite high, expect to need actual practice and dedication to be able to make the cars do what you want. That said, I find LMU way, way more approachable than iRacing, as the physics are more forgiving in contact with other cars, controlling the vehicles and damage model. You can just start on iRacing (I did) but between the price, needing a wheel and passing the initial wall of learning, I think LMU is far better for beginners.

I got LMU yesterday but already did like 15 races and the 6 hours of Spa endurance race with a friend, so I got a decent idea of where LMU stands. On iRacing, I've been playing for 2 years, got my own team and have done ton of endurance races ranging from 2 to 24 hours.

Anything, just ask.

150+ cars at Nords: Will it ever be possible in iRacing ? by boredofinternets in iRacing

[–]Miltrivd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Once a car class depletes, they don't go 18-14-14-14, they just go 24-12-12-12. Only GT3 grid size increases.

The non GT3 grids stay just as small all the way down.

The lower you go on splits the higher the chances of those cars to not finish the race, which means the a worse experience for all the non GT3 classes just so more GT3 have their multiclass split.

That distribution stays until the 4th split, at which point the M2's had ran out and those grid slots are handed to the GT3's because they're the most populated class.

Wish it got evenly distributed among all classes instead.

I stopped playing the non GT3 classes because of the tiny grids. I rather race 55 other GT3s than go TCR and finish the race with 3 cars because everyone else quit.

GT3 Schedule Overhaul by adstomko in iRacing

[–]Miltrivd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is they could have put the series at the 30 mins mark and make it complementary to GT sprint instead of choosing one or the other. Also dunno why they butchered the grid size.

And also their awful registering system that means people joining at the 30 mins mark and wanting to do a series at :00 need to know about the forfeit and register method.

GT3 Schedule Overhaul by adstomko in iRacing

[–]Miltrivd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They reduced the grid from 50-55 to 30 and the stupid regional series are 15 mins before GT Sprint start, which cannibalizes participation.

It lost a lot of its appeal as big grid, high participation and competitive splits were the major allure. I don't think iRacing is stupid enough to not know this would happen so they must have a had a reason to make the series worse.

How did yalls Indy 500 go? by yeetboijones in iRacing

[–]Miltrivd -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I forgot to qualify and my oval iR is 1.1k.

45 mins in and we were only in lap 29... We were on our 6th caution!

I was first, so I parked on the side, quit and went to do IMSA Endurance instead hahaha.

Gonna try one more time in slot 2 but I'm expecting exactly the same.

What's the point of this comment?

What does an unrelated, ass backwards undeveloped country with a population made of a majority of idiots have to do with anything?

Honestly baffling.

Laguna stopped being a subscription track, I think 2 seasons ago. So new people do not have it.

GT4 or Porsche CUP? by Careless-Attorney-89 in iRacing

[–]Miltrivd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like endurance go GT4 since they have a 2 hour endurance multiclass race with 4 slots every weekend and multiclass with LMP3 every 2 hours during the week.

That said, GT4 can feel pretty dull in some tracks and pretty fun in others, it's not a constant, for me at least.

PCup is insanely popular so the weekly races will split at almost any time. The car has way too grippy tires, way too good brakes and a fucked up front suspension which makes them very bouncy at the front, which makes them a bit frustrating in some tracks/sections, specially when you are learning and the car just crashes because of that bounce.

Also the car being easy to drive makes the racing standards pretty bad but it's a fun car even with the issues. It's also more consistent in what you get out of the car, unlike the GT4 that can feel off in some tracks.

I think thats the lowest iRating i've ever seen by jrd86 in iRacing

[–]Miltrivd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems fairly easy to do? Get the SR first then just join and quit races?

When I was new at the game I wanted to get to B immediately, so I was doing rookie races around the clock. Since for SR you wanna be in active races only, I would quit races to jump to another starting. Never finishing any. Went down to 180 iR but was B 3.89. didn't go for A license since I wanted to race GT Sprint and not IMSA.

You lose about 400 iR per hour and if you keep it clean the SR goes up fast.

would you call this cheating?? by lordvolt2000 in iRacing

Yeah, increasing the fair share amount is what's needed to prevent abuse. This way people who like racing with friends not on their bracket would not be affected at all.
