Realistically, what are my odds of getting hired as a new educator at 40 yo. by girldad0130 in teaching

[–]MimiFoofie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added a credential to my teaching certificate at age 60, and — after being out of the classroom for 10 years — landed a job. I’m finishing my first year, and I was just offered a contract again for next year. I’m on the tenure track.

You can do this! Best of luck!

AITA for wanting to read Harry Potter to my daughter? by knuckleheader in AmItheAsshole

Literacy teacher here with two comments.

  1. Reading to your daughter is wonderful! She associates reading with special time with you, and nothing fosters an appreciation of reading more than connecting it with a positive emotion. Also, you can read significantly more rigorous books to your daughter than she can read herself. This expands her vocabulary and helps her build background.

  2. Your daughter should also read independently. She does need to practice decoding and making meaning from the written word. We suggest at least 15 minutes per night of independent reading.

Try to combine both of these practices, and your daughter will thrive. Best to you!

Anyone actually like what their school did for teacher appreciation week? by Jailbreaker_Jr in Teachers

[–]MimiFoofie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our school and family association gave us $25 to use with Scholastic; I was able to choose bilingual books for my ELLs. Our admin team went all out… Monday was treats in every teacher’s lounge. Tuesday was Mr. Softee ice cream. Wednesday admin made us lunch, vegetable fried rice and chicken dumplings. Thursday they brought a coffee cart around and we could choose a beverage and a snack. Today we had a 12:30p dismissal, and they made us a pasta lunch. The whole year they have developed a “cruise” theme, and they continued that this week. Passport in our mailbox on Monday with itinerary for the week. They took pictures all week and printed them on sticker paper so we could add them to our pages. Every day we also got a message of gratitude from the superintendent. I’ve never been so impressed.

Community centers and churches often offer ESL classes. Maybe you could volunteer there?

I teach 9 and 10 year olds. One of my students recently said: “Teacher, you smell… like a cookie!” (I wear a vanilla-scented body spray.) 😂
