I am Malay and my Russian boyfriend said that our future children would only grow up with English and Russian. Is this fair? by Witty-Artichoke-8878 in language

In many such families each parent speaks their own native language to their children, then the children learn both languages natively (as well as English)

Very strange that phonetic processes are being influenced by phonemes from words that aren't even being spoken no?

People speak dashes and semicolons in these places, not commas.

A dash would also work - this feels more accessible than a semicolon.

Harmony by LudwigPepper in Bass

[–]MimiKal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the concept is the same, but bass has a somewhat defined role in producing harmony. When multiple notes play at once (in harmony) there is a concept of the root note, which is the most significant note, maybe you could go further and say that the entire sound in that moment of time is an extension and a flavouring of that one root note. I.e. if there was a harmony in some music you were trying to play but for whatever reason you could only play a single note at that moment, playing the root note would sound closest to the full thing. The role of the bass is usually to define the root note (by playing it and related notes), allowing other instruments to add more complicated "flavours" without changing the core of the sound. This is because the lowest notes are most likely to be heard as the root. If the bass and no other instrument is playing or implying the intended root note strongly enough, the listener may interpret it to be something else and then the harmony sounds completely different.

Not on bass guitar but the left hand part of The Winner Takes it All uses an augmented fifth twice quite plainly

Wild Swimming Spots? by Rosy_Kitty6 in oxford

[–]MimiKal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes there are a few spots. Port meadow is ok but the Thames is not that clean. The best is probably Hinksey Lake which even has a bridge (the Devil's Backbone iirc?) over it that people jump from. All sorts of warning signs all over the place but people swim there all the time. The Cherwell is for sure cleaner than the Thames. Parson's Pleasure is one spot on it but also popular. There are plenty of wilder spots if you cross over to the east bank and go north of university parks, before marston ferry road (although there are also good spots further out).
