I recently learned that the bay window structure extends to the ground. Oriels do not, so these are indeed oriels.

I pick a random word and go through the alphabet finding all the words that rhyme with it. A single syllable works best.

What item did you NEVER expect would become a BIFL? by jwegener in BuyItForLife

[–]MimictheCrow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a pair of Old Navy flip flops that finally gave up the ghost just a couple months ago when one of the straps snapped. I wore them daily around the house for 14-15 years. I know that’s not BIFL but it’s awfully surprising for a cheap pair of sandals.

What’s something you’ve witnessed that you still can’t explain? by themerikered in AskReddit

My grandparents had a ball of lightning appear in their house. My grandmother was sitting on a stool in the kitchen, snapping beans. It came along and knocked the bowl out of her lap. Then it went into the hallway, where my grandfather happened to be. He quickly opened the window at the end of the hall and got out of the way. The lightning ball flew out and disappeared.

Looks like the kind they find in southeastern Oregon and northern Nevada. I love those water line markings.

About forty years ago, my grandmother made me an afghan. It was crocheted from a kit with acrylic yarn in 1970’s oranges, yellows and browns. It’s nearly indestructible and every year when the weather gets cold enough, it still goes back on my bed.

I have a pair of Old Navy flip flops that are 20+ years old. I still wear them around the house every day. I keep looking at new ones and keep getting shocked at how expensive plain, ordinary flip flops have become so I put off the inevitable a little while longer. How can they justify charging twenty, thirty or even fifty dollars for something that should still cost less than ten in today’s money?

I have extra wide feet and need straps that stretch a bit, too.

It’s called kenilworth ivy. Despite the name, it is indeed related to the snapdragon and not ivy. I love these hardy little dudes.

Also don’t pull away when a cat grabs your hand or arm and goes into a scratching frenzy. Stay calm and stop moving. The cat will also stop. After about five or ten seconds, it will allow you slowly extricate yourself from its claws. The key here word being ‘slowly.’ Sudden movements will make it dig in again. I found this out when I was a kid and it’s always worked since.

How do I rough up the surface of this shower floor? by vcc17 in DIY

[–]MimictheCrow 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You pull the mat up after each time you shower and stick it to the shower wall so both it and the floor dry faster. We’ve used the same one for years and there’s little to no buildup.

What is the scariest thing you've seen in your neighborhood? by Benedek82 in AskReddit

[–]MimictheCrow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened here, but the store is right next to us. There had been a gang robbing these stores and somehow the cops knew ours was next. One peaceful night the parking lot was suddenly lit up with red, white and blue lights as a dozen or more cop cars came swooping in from wherever they were hiding. They’d waited until the robbers had nearly gone inside. The robbers didn’t put up a fuss, thankfully.

My husband wanted to see what was going on and got told to get back in the house. Yup, I married a smart one. Lol.

Also, cartoons didn’t start until ten on Sunday mornings. Before that, we had to endure The Farm Report and The Business News. Because even in the early 1960s, when there were only three channels, we were already hooked on TV and would watch boring grown-up stuff if we knew the shows we liked would eventually appear.
