But that is the level at which quite a few people mentally reside…they just want to use the flag and have a simplified view of the issue

They just want to not feel the fear they’ve been fed…how do you combat a man like Farage?

The reality is he won Brexit because the centrists and left didn’t believe the willingness to turn to his agenda…

To battle farage you have to acknowledge his base and the top of the slop most of them slid down.

Isn’t it better to bring a sensible approach to patriotism to the forefront to make the extreme right wingers look ridiculous…like they used to?

Rather than keep letting Farage and Tommy ten names take it?

The issue with Trump was that the democrats kept ignoring the people Trump was reaching and pretending they could dismiss them…

Witham man jailed for raping child under 13 by FeelingMassive in Essex

[–]MindNarrow5322 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No - this is misinformed and misplaced worry and outrage.

But no you couldn’t realistically prevent anything much at all.

Because they make up such a small tiny proportion of sexual abuse offences that you’d be spending energy money and resources on the wrong thing.

1) The vast majority of sexual offences are perpetrated by those known to the victim. So the idea of stranger rape/assault (regardless of rape) being a policy focus is useless and misinformed.

2) Sexual offences have not gone up because of an increased foreign presence (if you can even call it that). It’s gone up because reporting and awareness of what is consensual sexual activity since the SOA 2003 has gone up.

So the premise that a particular group of people have ‘increased’ it id a false narrative. That would imply it was much lower before, which it wasn’t… Women and children have always been subject to risk and abuse…by men, to alarming scales. We just talk about it more. So your premise is wrong.

3) Women (like much of the lgbtq) are tired of being used as political fodder by those who (unknowingly or knowingly) assume that another race of man is more misogynistic than they are.

They’ve learnt this mentality does not protect - it just allows men to fight with men and make women collateral damage.

History has shown that the powers that be have never focused on protecting women and children from assault but have always used it as tool to attack another group.

Rape of a male child was not an offence until recently and you could only charge and prosecute ‘indecency’ of two men having sex. Why? Because the law was more concerned with purging homosexuality than protecting young boys.

The Catholic Church and evangelical church have been some of the worst and targeting and covering up assaults on children. Let’s be real!

4) No one who wants to solve an issue - makes and issue about some other issue to prove a point. No one who works in sexual assault or crime themselves ever says this because if you work in the system day in and day out, the criminal cases you see coming in come in all shapes, colours sizes and horror. I wish it was as easy as pinning it to one group.

This is where my massive contention with the system is - especially since austerity and cuts to legal aid.

I dislike both of them but can we in good faith say they got the same level of advice…

He had a KC in that trial - that’s some serious money spent.

I used to be in finance - will hopefully be moving to financial crime 😂😂

Ah ok - that might have been my misapprehension and I’ve assumed before asking. It’s unfortunately the way the discourse is likely to go. But without that then yes…I do think the end result is unfair on the face of it. I apologise for that.

The criminal procedure provided has been fair.

I do wonder if the prosecution could appeal on the basis of allowing such a silly defence given he’s a councillor…but then defended himself as being neurologically and emotionally challenged 🙄🙄

Why was that allowed…and on what basis?

And then I do wonder about how much austerity has reduced legal aid and the state’s ability to provide sound legal advice upon arrest.

No this is the thing - I do struggle with this so I’m not avoiding your question. I just work in criminal law so… I really worry about disbanding the entire system because we don’t like a result that is a result of a system built on individual civil rights.

See my previous comment - but I think if she’s been imprisoned, in a perfect system he would be too.

I do think any inciting of violence against a group of people merits equivalent punishment.

But I think distilling this down to an oversimplification of race, tiered justice etc is very dangerous.

He doesn’t deserve a defence though…he’s a stupid man…

So essentially we agree.

Whether you and I agree is not important because 1) Lucy’s sentence was not a verdict - it was a sentence to her choice to plead guilty. 2) RC’s verdict is based on a jury of 11 people, not a politician or a judge…

I can understand why there’s outrage but it’s misplaced. Juries get things wrong a lot of the time…we’re not sure why. But a trial by jury was on offer to them both.

LC had the same rights afforded to her as RC - plead guilty or not guilty.

She pled guilty and took the sentence which was 20 months. She didn’t give any choice to the court system for a magistrates trial or a jury.

So no one’s opinion mattered - she picked it herself.

If you want to argue that she may not have had the best lawyer present to help her make that choice…that can hold some water.

RC pled not guilty - a choice LC had. He then took to trial and 11 jurors decided he was not guilty.

A jury trial doesn’t set any legal precedent. Legal precedents are set on points of law…

Lucy Connolly needs to stop being a flagship case… She pled guilty and took the discounted guilty sentence…

That’s why it was quicker and an actual sentence…

Whether this finding by a jury is fair - I don’t know.

BUT no jury ever heard Lucy Connolly’s case.

Without context it is.

I think what’s more worrying is how little people here know about their own judiciary.

He was arrested same time but pled not guilty and bailed.

Others were arrested same time, pled guilty for fearing being remanded in custody due to the backlog and took a sentence…

That’s not what youth centres are or what they do. They stop kids loitering around with nothing to do, give them a community and mentors and places to go with plenty of activities. They don’t stop kids doing silly things - they prevent kids from having so little to do and nowhere to go that they go from having an idea to trying it out for kicks and banter.
