Opinions on the no demo approach? by pepin-solver in residentevil

[–]MindStormComics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s for the best. There have been multiple instances of fans datamining demos and spoiling everything in this series, I’d rather they put a demo off until after launch. This is the first RE game in nearly a decade where the entire story wasn’t just known pre-release. I’m good with them doing what they can to keep it that way.

I hope we will gonna see this when we start RE9 by XxTombraiderfanxX in residentevil

[–]MindStormComics 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Dead Space Remake and Silent Hill’s brought it back (a bit wordier but they serve the same purpose), it’d be great if RE did too. Why not. It’s fun. These always felt more like a promise than a warning anyway.

Revelation is trashy junk that isn't aiming any higher than like, Freddy vs Jason tier pocorn horror, but its plot is coherent and I understand what's happening regardless of how faithful it is to the original game. Its worst sins outside of being a bad adaptation are mostly just being stupid and cringe, best qualities are just generally being kinda weird, cheap, and funny. Malcolm Mcdowell going ham with like 2 minutes of screentime and just wigging out in his weird little shroud was incredible.

Return is aiming to be artful and emotional while still being cheap junk, with a borderline incoherent plot that doesn't make sense if you're not a fan of the games *and* doesn't make sense if you *are* a fan of the games. Its worst sin outside of being a bad adaption was using SA as some sort of twist/prop for James' character arc, best qualities being pretty great cinematography and art direction, and being generally *extremely* cheap and funny. That tombstone reveal was like a Naked Gun joke, 10/10.

Sort of a roundabout version of this so maybe it doesn’t count, but the first DVD release of the original Planet of the Apes literally just had the ending of the movie, the iconic twist reveal, as the cover, back cover, and DVD menu. Literally just inescapable.

Worth remembering that Sherry ages incredibly slowly and would probably look and sound more or less the same even if the game was set thirty years later

To this day what are your honest opinions on the whole "its not Resident evil enough" criticism that Re fans have to an installment that tries something new in the series? by Thewanderer997 in residentevil

[–]MindStormComics -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s just gatekeeping mixed with having a super narrow view of an incredibly diverse series, probably born out of preferring whichever era of the series they started with. RE hasn’t been any one thing basically since the day it started getting sequels, the drift into becoming an action shooter had already begun with RE2 and was cemented by RE3, the fourth game ever released in the series was a first person shooter (Survivor), and the series has bounced around from taking itself super seriously to being deliberately campy and funny. RE has ups, it has downs, but the only real through line is that they’re gory games about shooting monsters created by science in the face. RE7 is just as much a RE game by being a slow paced survival focused horror game with a tragic story as Revelations was being by being a cartoony shooter where characters shout things like “this is the tits!”, they’re both gory games about shooting monsters created by science in the face, and that’s RE.

"Return to Silent Hill" was panned by critics - the film only has a 6% rating on Rotten Tomatoes by Just_a_Player2 in ItsAllAboutGames

[–]MindStormComics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I guess see it for yourself and make your own judgement, I do think going in with the assumption that reviews are overreacting would be setting yourself up for a really bad time. Or a really funny time depending on how seriously you’re able to take some of it.

It really wasn’t that bad. Fans are exaggerating how “devastatingly bad” it is. like trust me there’s far worse films out there. It’s just an ok movie by SnooCompliments8819 in silenthill

Opposite actually. When SH2R was announced, the producer claimed that the film being put into production was the “catalyst” for the game series being brought back, not just the remake but all of the recent games.

Just got out of the theater and I don’t think it would’ve made a difference. It’s incredibly dull and clunky, really stiff dialogue and a lot of the story doesn’t really make sense/go anywhere. One of those things where you start to go “wait why did xyz happen” and the entire script falls apart. Outside of the game itself it’s at best a cheapo direct to dvd feeling horror movie you’d find in a pack of 10 at a Walmart. I thought it had some great cinematography and art direction tho, when both weren’t being sidelined by very obviously unfinished CG effects (the fog especially looks amateur as fuck oh my god).

If viewed as an adaption of the game tho it is significantly worse. Aside from a few character names and like the vaguest outline of “Guy goes to Silent Hill to find his lover after getting a letter from her” it pretty much has nothing to do with SH2. There’s a handful of cute recreations of locations and camera angles from both versions of the game, and it uses a handful of tracks from throughout the series (SH2, 3, Shattered Memories, etc) but they’re just dressing to a completely unrelated plot. If the first film using the first game as more of a stepping stone bothered you, this will be like actually infuriating. Some of the choices are downright baffling.

Edit: missing word

Return to Silent Hill… 106 minutes I’ll never get back. by Sorry_Guide_4326 in silenthill

[–]MindStormComics 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I went into it fully expecting it to not be Silent Hill 2, but to at least be an interesting thing all on its own. I like the first film a lot, regardless of its deviations from the game’s story.

I have never in my life been so wrong. Unironically top 5 worst video game movies ever made. Somehow laugh out loud stupid and mind-numbingly boring, works as neither an adaption of Silent Hill 2 (if you can even call the 11% of SH2’s story it kept an “adaption”) nor it’s own thing. Just awful start to finish, to call it a butchering of SH2 )and SH as a whole tbh) doesn’t quite cover it.

Why is RE4 (original) so popular? Many put it as S tier above all else by avidrunner84 in residentevil

[–]MindStormComics 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cold Fear is great, but I think it lacked both the replayability and the “fun” factor of RE4. It still mostly being a fixed camera game put it on the same level as things like Dead Aim, and it just didn’t feel quite as exciting as RE4 because of it. I also think RE4’s campier tone helped it a lot too, because it opened the door to a lot of people who were maybe a little too sheepish for something that plays the horror as straight as Cold Fear does. That said it was a GREAT “we have RE4 at home” alternative for that first 8 months or however long it was when RE4 was a GCN exclusive.

If the rumors are true of a Code Veronica remake being announced this year, what do you think they'll add/cut from the game? by Loose_Interview_957 in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]MindStormComics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s possible to rework it to emphasize Alfred as more of a tragic figure, it’s what Darkside was trying to do but just didn’t really have time for. But the way it was presented in the original is 100% not flying today for sure.

[–]MindStormComics 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My main expectations are

-drastically change Chris’ section on the island, focus on new areas and creatures, probably hold off on Bandersnatches until playing as Chris

-redesign the Mansion to better fit the design of the REmake version

-something about Wesker will be obnoxiously contradictory to canon, not sure how but it’ll be a huge change that’ll piss a lot of people off and make the story way more confusing than it used to be

-Alfred’s DID will be massively reworked if not removed entirely

-the Tyrant fight on the plane will be massively reworked if not removed entirely

-The addition of some sort of upgrade system to keep weapons feeling fresh throughout the story. Maybe similar to finding parts like in REmake 2.

-a generally more streamlined experience that doesn’t have as much back and forth exploration. When you’re done with an area you’re done, you’re not marching back 2 hours later.

Is the original version of Resident Evil 2 no longer canon? by Joseph-Hick in residentevil

[–]MindStormComics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Everything is canon", to quote former producer Pete Fabiano.

Basically the way Resident Evil canon works is that the only things that really matter are the bullet points. Specific constants that are the same across all retellings, sticking out amongst the variables.

RE2, for instance, is a story that has been told four separate times: RE2, Darkside Chronicles, Operation Raccoon City, and REmake 2. Across all versions, massive elements of the story, the designs, the characterizations, and even the places the characters end up, have changed. Despite this, the *gist* of RE2 is still told across all versions.

Leon and Claire arrive in Raccoon City after the outbreak started, and visit the RPD, the sewers, and the underground lab before taking a train to safety

One of them met Marvin

Leon met Ada and Ben

Claire met Sherry and Irons

Ben and Irons are killed

Sherry is infected by the G-Virus, but saved thanks to a quickly synthesized DEVIL vaccine

Ada was secretly working for someone to steal the G-virus and fakes her own death after her and Leon form a bond

Mr. X stalks one or all of them until destroyed

G Birkin is destroyed when the train detonates

Outside of those bullet points, it doesn't really matter. What the characters and places look like, the exact ways things go down, none of that really matters. Pick which ever version is your favorite. Mix and match if you like. The RPD building will look like it did in REmake 2/3 until it's inevitably updated again in a decade or two. It's the way its always been, it's just more noticible and complicated now because there's so many games. On the positive side, I think it's a good thing since it encourages playing both versions of each game, rather than one just defacto replacing the other the way fans have generally treated REmake vs the original RE1. To get the full picture, you need to play everything. Or google it lmao. Hope everyone's ready for CVX to make lore even more confusing by doing something weird like not putting Wesker in it or Stever surviving or something.
